Dylan Strome, picked 3rd overall by the 'Yotes in the stacked 2015 draft, to most, has looked like a bit of a disappointment considering the offensive talent taken after him. A big, smart and skilled center, he destroyed junior hockey and excelled in his first AHL season at age 20. In 2018 he found himself in the deal that sent Nick Schmaltz back to Arizona that hopefully gave him a change of scenery. Strome had a couple good years but the Blackhawk team was transitioning into firm rebuild status and offense around him began drying up
Past couple seasons since landing in Washington have landed him 65 and 67 points, tallying 20 goals and 40 assists for the first time in his career in both years
This season, Strome and the Caps have taken the league by storm. A huge part of that revival is the pursuit of goal #895 by the 'Great 8'
Tonight, the Capitals thumped the Blues 8-1. Strome picked up 3 assists and Ovechkin notched two goals to eclipse the 10 goal mark. This leads to the next stat; he has assisted on all 10 of Ovechkin's goals this season - 5 primary and 5 secondary assists
Ovechkin has taken 14 games this season to score 10 goals - last season he scored his 10th goal on February 6th in game 45 for the Caps
#17 in DC Red is now 2nd in the NHL in assists with 18, and 6th in points with 22
Strome's loving it, Ovi's loving it, and Caps are one of the leagues biggest surprises thus far a month into the 2024-25 season. It appears he has been chosen by the hockey gods to lift Ovechkin into literal goal scoring 'Greatest of All Time' status, possibly as soon as this season. It's been great to see his play elevate and for him to play the Backstrom/Kuznetsov role on Washington's 1st line with #8 in his last few years
