The refs union is the reason for poor officiating

With the refs union, it's nearly impossible for the NHL to hold referees/linesmen accountable for poor performance.

The league can't fire officials who do a poor job unless the union agrees to it, and unions rarely are OK with their members getting canned.
 
While it's true unions do a good job of protecting their members I think this is baseless speculation at best.

I don't think the league has tried to fire any of their refs for ineptitude or anything of the like. They take it pretty easy on the refs.

Hard to say if the bad officiating has to do with a lack of discipline from the league (doubt it), or simply the fact that man is fallible.
