No point in them moving him. The flames are going to be bad for a few years, they should burn off a few years of that contract before looking at moving it or buying it out. It’s not like they will need the cap for a few years.
Like it or not, Huberdeau is the centerpiece of your team. Build around him.
The problem with keeping him as a team centrepiece is the potential damage it could cause to the team culture. The guy is the most paid player on the team but plays like his balls haven't dropped yet and has made it abundantly clear when he was traded that he doesn't want to be there. What message does that send? How inspiring is that? He's signed long term along with another old overpaid veteran. This will make Calgary a less attractive destination for quality free agents as well as college players.
And for young players on a rebuild, having "models" like Huberdeau, a floating, complementary one-dimensional winger who wears an A on his jersey, isn't optimal either.
Before the Flames even decide whether to keep him or dump/trade him, they need to get him going on the ice. In a major way. He's not gonna suddenly turn into the most wanted player, but it could mitigate his negative value, and at least not make him culture poison for the Flames if he stays.
