Line Combos: The "Power Play"

Get rid of the stupid drop pass, it only wastes time. We also need a legit shooting option from the point, passing the puck around until it gets to Caufield is very predictable and easy to defend. I don't blame Burrows or any pp coach that has to work with this team, very low skill/creativity in this group.

It’s hard to fire your buddies, just ask Bergevin.

It’s hard to fire your buddies, the Bergevin special
I doubt Hughes has big ties with him.

Oh well. At least, his incompetence is contributing to the greater cause, the tank. Same reason they kept Ducharme so long.

I’m talking about St Louis, he’s under St Louis. A new GM isn’t gonna tell his coach who his assistants should be.

1st wave (for 90 seconds)

Caufield-Suzuki-Monahan

Ghule-Dach

2nd wave, mix and match with the best of the rest.

This.

And no more drop back pass …. they need the double drop back pass before entering the zone. :sarcasm:

I think lack of offensive defenseman. They usually on teams with good powerplay, not a fluke
I'm tired of the D being blamed for everything especially offense, the young D are hanging in there fighting up-river, the forwards are under performing, as usual. On paper Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, and Monahan, should be enough. I'm not expecting a great powerplay just one that isn't embarrassing.

Good powerplay quarterback though. They usually run the PP

Working backwards...

19/20: 22nd best PP
18/19: 30th best PP
17/18: 12th best PP
16/17: 13th best PP
15/16: 25th best PP
14/15: 23rd best PP
13/14: 19th best PP
12/13: 5th best PP
11/12: 28th best PP
10/11: 7th best PP
09/10: 2nd best PP
08/09: 13th best PP
07/08: 1st best PP

Easy answer....we don't have the talent

This is true to some degree but not the entire picture. We can be scoring more if they worked better. Coyotes have a better PP than us bud. It's in the Habs head now and something is off.

Too much tentative style play IMO. Not playing with confidence is a problem.

They need to shoot more. Specially Suzuki and the point men.

Right now the opposing teams are just cheating on Caufield and keeping the box low in order to prevent the cross crease.

Confidence is key too, but imo the biggest issue is a plain lack of talent. We can't even put two units together. Offensive black hole outside of nick and cole

Run the entire PP with those 5. Beyond deployment, get rid of the mandatory drop pass in zone entry, and once set up, every player needs to show that they are willing to attack the net and shoot when they have the puck.

Right now, they're just passing in the periphery with no real movement, and opponents knows who is shooting. There's only 2 guys that they try to set up for a shot 95% of the time, and it's Suzuki and Caufield. When the opponent feels like a guy is moving towards a shot, the box shifts and you get openings. For that to happen, the puck carrier needs to show a far more aggressive shooting attitude towards the net. Even if you want to pass, you always have to sell a shot to put pressure and create movement. And BTW, selling a shot doesn't just involve faking a shot. It's about how you move towards the net, your angle of attack, stick blade/head/body positionning.

We need players capable of pressuring the box. If you have a guy who can stickhandle past a player then that backs a guy up, creating space for one of our guys to fill and hopefully rip a good shot. if the player does not back up then our skill guy goes around him and lets a shot go at the net. Otherwise we are too static and goalies are too good at stopping pucks when they dont have to move laterally.

Im not sure if we dont have those types of players, or if that is just not how our PP is approached. Im thinking Suzuki should be able to pressure the box and even Caulfield can buzz around. Dach is another guy. .
