The Playoff Push, Tanking and Scoreboard Watching Thread

It'd be more fun if Edmonton went on a last minute run and took the division.
First Edmonton, then Vegas, then sweep Colorado, then we get the showdown with Berube.
Oilers in round two would be fun if we could get past the kings.

Again. LA has been winning games, have a majority of the have at home, and only a few points back. Don't count them out

It’s possible for sure. Just not easy making up 2 games with 6 to play and both have relatively easy schedules. LA probably has to run the table to have a chance. And do they want to exert that much energy prior to playoffs starting?

8 points up on Calgary, 4 if they win their games in hand. We own the tiebreakers though as of right now. So they need 5 points to break ahead. 2 more points should pretty much clinch a playoff spot.

We also are only 5 points behind the Avs for 3rd in the Central. But with only 4 games left, I do not think there is enough runway there for them to overtake the Avs. They own the Tiebreaker so we would need to gain 6 points on them in 4 games. Pretty much impossible.

Minnesota is going to be fighting with Calgary for that last WC spot. That game between them could very likely determine which one makes it and which one does not. Both teams have a similar schedule with Minnesota's being worse IMO and they have a back to back in there.

Edmontonnisnt going on a run with their 3 best players mcdavid draisaitl and ekholm injured and not playing. They are just hoping they will be good for playoffs.

TeamMagic Number to clinch PlayoffsCurrent PointsGames RemainingPossible PointsRWROWCommon Games

Flames.856972732vs W

Utah.825922734vs B

Flames had a breakaway with 2 seconds left in regulation after killing a PP, but lost in OT. They could win out to get 33 RW, to the Blues current 31. They can’t beat the Blues for ROW under any tied scenario. So the magic number of 4 becomes 100% solid with any combination of 2 Blues RW or a non-RW for Calgary. If that hasn’t happened yet when the 4 points have been ticked off, add one more point to the magic number to ‘officially’ clinch.

Utah is mathematically eliminated from catching us, but are still alive vs the Wild for the last spot.

The race between Calgary and Minnesota is real.

This is like the scene from Blues Brothers:

Missing our #1 D-man, lost our best winger on a hot streak, at home vs an angry contender, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark out and we’re wearing sunglasses.

If I told you we were missing our best winger (Holloway), how should we adjust the game plan. Would you say, “Play a rookie in his 3rd game.” And not miss a beat.

12 in a row is nuts. The streak has to end before the playoffs start. But it was pretty satisfying to get two RW off Colorado.

Originally I thought:
They won’t make the playoffs, but they’ll stay in the race until the last couple weeks. It’s good for the team culture to try and compete.

Then I thought: These bastards are going to squeak in! But they’ll probably get swept in the first round. Still, it’s a big step forward.

Now I think:
There is only maybe 1 or 2 teams in the West that I think should be favored in a 7 game series. (Unfortunately, we’ll probably be facing one of those.) But I expect the Blues to be a pretty tough out, and won’t be surprised at all if they win a round. And if they can win the first round, they can win any round. This group of players may be dumb enough to think they can win a Cup.

Current West matchups (going to start doing this too):
1 Winnipeg vs WC2 Minnesota
2 LAK vs 3 Edmonton

1 Vegas vs WC1 St Louis
2 Dallas vs 3 Colorado

The Kings are 3 points back (4 really with the tiebreaker) of Vegas with 6 games left each. Probably will run out of runway to catch them.

Dallas is 4 points back with a game in hand and probably would have the tiebreaker in Winnipeg. We’ll have to keep an eye on that, but unless the Blues really dip, that is not their opponent.

Edmonton and Colorado both look like first round losers to me.

Vegas as the opponent is looking pretty likely. Not my preferred choice as I love their defense 1-6 but the West is rough this yr so it a what it is. Hertl was concussed against Tampa two weeks ago and is back at practice wearing a no-contact jersey. Will def be watching the VGK/COL on Tuesday. Would be nice to have big 55 back for Game 1. Vegas has some beef.

I mainly mean fans of those teams being less patient with a full tear down. Imagine how Buffalo fans would look at the Blues back in the playoffs and winning a series.
I feel so bad for Buffalo fans. Trade ROR, he wins a cup. Trade Eichel, he wins a cup. Who is next??? Now granted, they got back some great players, but they haven't been able to get over the hump. Pretty strong and committed fan base for a team that is just stuck at the bottom.

As long as we get into the Pacific, I could care less who we play. Every playoff team is good, everyone has their pros and cons. But the Central is the hardest bracket in hockey right now IMO and avoiding it until a 3rd round if you get that far is still the best path to take.

I think Dallas is going to win the west still but if they get 2 hard rounds against team like Colorado & Winnipeg, the winner of the Pacific could sneak off with a series win due to the bloodbath first 2 rounds they will likely have had to go through.
That's exactly how I think last year went. Dallas lead that series against the Oilers 2-1 at one point, and then looked completely out of gas losing 3 in a row for a 4-2 series loss. It's brutal going through a tough Central division.

I’d love to see somebody do a breakdown of us vs LV.
Not sure about a breakdown, but LV is definitely a deep team on both offense and defense. Assume that Hertl will be healthy for game 1, just because it's Vegas!!! Hope this link works, but it shows the depth for each team. It's now showing Holloway and Parayko right now, but we know where they slot in if healthy. Click on the Depth Charts link once on the page if it doesn't default there.
