OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Post Draft - Still dont need no QB

If Pickens had played out his contract, then signed with someone else next year, wouldn't the Steelers gotten almost the same compensation as they got in the trade?

If so, the trade becomes even more incomprehensible.

Yes but there's more risk. They would probably get a 3rd but it's hard to predict comp picks exactly. It's likely they would have gotten a 3rd if he gets paid big money and has the playing time but trading him now guarantees a 3rd and takes the risk out of it. The comp pick would also be in 2027 instead of 2026 so doing it now expedites the pick. He could also get injured or have meltdowns like Diontae Johnson had last year where he just tanks his value league wide, doesn't get paid and we get no significant comp pick in return. It also would have held us hostage in UFA. We wouldn't be able to make a big UFA signing without canceling out that Pickens 3rd.

The value sucks but they didn't want to deal with him anymore. They thought he might hold out or be difficult about his contract. They don't want to extend him due to his character concerns and his value will only tank more if they wait until he acts up, holds out etc. We'd be looking at a late round pick at best in that scenario. Omar's just getting out front of this the best he can but it still sucks. Definitely need to sign another veteran WR now unless the plan is just to tank for a QB this season but tanking just doesn't seem like something Tomlin and Rooney would ever do for better or worse.

I did enjoy everyone coming out saying they were worried about a hold in when they dealt with TJ and Minka hold in just fine. DJ held in before his contract extension. Everyone calling him a child in the local media and saying his teammates hated him and guys like muth were tired of babysitting him. The guy is going to ball out in Dallas and we are going to be hoping DK doesn’t snap at Mason and the constant double coverage

Rodger’s is still very much in play. Said he’s going thru something personal right now ( he knows but wouldn’t elaborate) but expects him sign after it’s taken care of.

Not much of a risk.

Idiotic decision. Among many idiotic decisions.

Yes Rodgers will sign in September if a contender loses a qb to injury he isn’t needed here

The team currently has a projected 93m in cap space next year, 4th in the league. Even with Watt signing likely to take up a good chunk of that, the chances of them being in a position to sign someone who'd wipe any comp valuation for Pickens right off the board is pretty good.

I mean it's 90% sure that 90% of the reason he's gone is that he was too much of a crashout for Tomlin to want to continue holding. But in terms of pure asset management, getting the guaranteed pick rather than the maybe pick - and getting it about 10 picks ahead and a year early - seems a pretty reasonable return for moving off of a WR a year early.

HFBPens : NHALS!!1 Tomlin Purgatory!!1 Why won't they just rebuild!?!!1

Also HFBPens : Ugh!!1 I can't believe they traded their problematic WR2 who wasn't going to be here in 2026 anyway!!1 Mason Rudolph/42-year-old Aaron Rodgers really needed him to be 'contenders' in 2025!!1

In a season that they aren't going to contend anyway because of their QB situation.

Any questions?

It’s not a rebuild if you just dump your only offensive weapon since Ab and Bell while giving up a 2nd and giving the older version of him 30 million a year
There’s no justification for waiting on Rodgers do bring in the same wr we had last season
If you had drafted a wr and traded him while not trading for Dk you could call it a rebuild

Tbh I feel like there’s been a shift towards character in player acquisition/team building. Draft or FA.

Not saying we drafted low character guys all the time before but feels like high character is a priority.

Which is great. unfortunately the NFL is devoid of morals and moral victories but can’t argue with it

If they’re rebuilding, why sign Watt to a huge contracts? Because that’s exactly what they’re going to do.

Depends, but probably not, no.

The comp picks factor in all of the qualifying FA that a team loses and signs and how much they sign for. If you sign more than you lose, you don't get anything. The reason they are getting so many next year is because none of the FA they signed this year qualify either because their cap hit isn't high enough or because they were technically released like Slay (and potentially Rodgers).

Looking forward to next year, the FA that might qualify:

Seumalo - Who they would probably need to replace in FA so it'd be a wash
Slay - Who they would probably need to replace in FA so it'd be a wash and he's a 36 year old corner
Elliot -Who they should be re-signing, but might not even get enough to qualify anyway
Warren - Kinda doubt he'd get enough money to qualify

Given the number of holes they will have to fill and the money they will have available to them, it's unlikely they would have got a comp pick for Pickens...even if he didn't melt down this year and tank his value.

So, what do you label Rodgers then?

For the Lazard hopefuls...

Regardless of what people on the outside think of him…. He seems well liked by all of his teammates and people he interacts with. Maybe except Mike Williams lol.

I think two things can be true- he’s an attention seeking diva but doesn’t have character issues.

I mean some reports about the iowa rb sound similar to Gp and when your interested in Rodgers not sure they care about high character

No there’s a ton of ex teammates that hate Rodgers

Personally, I'd be fine exploring it, but from their perspective, I'd imagine:

1. They don't want to admit they are rebuilding out loud and trading Watt is screaming it from the mountain tops.

2. They think that Watt is still going to be an impact player in years 2-3-4 of the deal and that's their target window to be back competing. So even if they are paying him a shit load of money for 2025, it's worth it to have him for the following years. Same logic applies to DK.

I guess we'll find out when he's blaming the lack of targets, or the targets for his failures.
