OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Post Draft - Still dont need no QB

Man I pine for the days of this team at least having the perception/rep of being "drama free". Having players like Brown and Bell blew the door off that and now #RogersWatch is part of the team news cycle.

Rodgers or Pickens?

I think there's not many stories of Rodgers doing that? Trying to dictate a bunch of stuff to coaches and the front office, but not acting up among the players. Or so is my impression.

Tbh I get the impression most NFL locker rooms are full of batshit crazy and guys are so used to it they just get on with it. I think I'd hate it, but it seems to work with them.

Doesn't have to do with draft strategy.

Something has changed since the Cowher years.

In the early to late 90's this team would draft a player and let him cut his teeth on ST's for a year or 2. Then once they've done well in that arena, they were given playing opportunities. This was an outstanding philosophy to develop role players to support the stars.

Recently, there are no Orpheus Royes, Lee Flowers, Jerry Osalvskis, Myron Bell, Fred McAfees, Hines Ward. The only person I can think of from the Tomlin years that was groomed like this was Isaac Redman who played a large supporting role.

This goes back to my general mantra that this team cannot develop players, period. It's a major f***ing problem of why they can't get over the mediocre to pretty good hump.
Willie Gay
Mike Wallace
Antonio Brown
Jason Worilds
Emmanual Sanders
Kelvin Beachum
Vince Williams
Cam Sutton
Chuks (kinda)
Dan Moore
Calvin Austin

All dudes that took a year or two to develop and become starters, there are others if you set the bar at contributers rather than starters.

You need to start following football. It's well documented that Rodgers did that many times with the Jets.

Only 1 man remains as a constant who has allowed this culture to be what it is. The BS is tolerated and accepted by Tomlin.

But "hurr durr...he's a players coach"

That's like saying a an adult who doesn't correctly parent his child is a "child's parent" because they let them eat Snickers and MnM's for dinner. Yea the kid loves it, but is it what he needs to grow into a functioning adult?

Name the current players who are on this "Intern" path?
Tomlin has been a coach for 20 years and you named just a handful of people.

Oh and I remember Tomlin's "2 dogs, 1 bone" commentary related to Wallace vs AB. Yup he elected to have the corpse of Hines Ward starting instead of these 2 up and comers. Believe AB took a KR to the house vs TB in his 1st NFL action. But nope, gotta battle it out over a washed up vet.

Is there any organization that’s actually drama free these days? I think it’s just a different world than it was back in the day.

Between how the players act and social media allowing fans to see every little bit of drama that happens as it’s happening, I think it’d be tough to find.

Back in the day?, like when Ernie Holmes was shooting at helicopters?

People need to realize that professional athletes were always acting like this, it's just that social media and the fact that everyone now has super handy photo and video camera that fits into their jeans pocket is the thing that has changed. Plus the Press and the local Cops are no longer letting actions slide.

There are always degrees and yes Ernie Holmes had a bit of pychotic breakdown and Art "took care of the mess". Mean Joe also kicked a guy in the balls in the middle of a game.

Sadly, DV is and was likely highly prevalent among athletes when compared to the general population.

But I will say I've never seen another team deal with these weird situations:

- AB FB live after one of the playoff wins.
- Blount and Bell getting caught smoking weed in a car, causing them to miss their flight.
- A player getting a 15 yd unsportsmanlike for entering another team's huddle.
- A coach who stands on the field in the middle of a kick return.
- A player who stands by himself while the remainder of the team is in the tunnel for the national anthem

No one died with the things I listed, but I've been watching football for a very long time and can't remember encountering any of this stuff with any other team. Some weird shit surrounds Tomlin

Having it on the national mall is pretty sick, not gonna lie

Smoking weed and the Al in the tunnel isn’t even that bad.
TO literally stomped on the cowboys star. We had guys with sharpies. Basketball has players fighting fans.

Herbig Trice Leal Roberts Loudermilk are St guys that are rotating on defense

You're arguing against nothing I said. Did I say they were that bad?
I said that there's been a ton of weird shit...if you want to use the word "unprecedented" it's appropriate here.

Just like it's unprecedented to not have 1 single person from your tree to bear fruit after 20 years of coaching. That's unprecedented.
Also unprecedented to lose to a couple 3 win teams back to back at home and still have a job.

There's no real drive to be great. Tomlin enables rather than pushes his stars. It was mentioned TJ wasn't moving around sets because TJ didn't want to move around. And, of course, Ben infamously didn't like turning his back to the defense (on PA) or apparently running the sneak.

You think Noll would have let those guys just coast on their generational talent? You think Belicheat would have been like "I'm good - you decide on how hard you need to work"?!?

Tomlin inherited a SB-ready roster and staff. He's going to leave an absolute dumpster fire - nothing worth keeping (well, maybe Boswell) - including having destroyed a championship culture. These guys don't really even give a shit about not having won a playoff game in 8+ years.

Though pedigreed Jones is one. Guys depending on how they develop :

Trice
Bishop
Sawyer
P. Wilson
R. Wilson
Benton to a degree
McCormick
Warren

Again depending on how they turn out.

But how many are supposed to have? Most top 2 rd picks are expected to get early playing time. Most guys after the 4th dont make it out of camp especially on teams that are anywhere near good.

Go through the drafts of other teams for the last 15 years and i bet you dont see a lot of sit and develop successes.

Just not how the league works anymore.

I should have added the word "quality" to my explanation so that's on me for not expressing myself clearly.

Orpheus Roye was a quality backup/sometimes starter and so were those other dudes I named.

Leal and Loudermilk are trash and always have been- they are more likely to be released than make the final 53.
They just let Roberts walk so they didn't think highly of him.

I'll give you Herbig and Trice- quality rotational pieces. But if that's all you got? Yikes, it's no wonder this team is in trouble and has no depth.

Loudermilk they just brought back. It’s Robertson the rb learning LB i was thinking about who plays ST. Most of the ST guys are just depth guys.
