OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Post Draft - Still dont need no QB

Quick question on the Aaron Rodgers situation. Has he been actually released by the Jets and is able to sign a new deal or has he been "released" and has to wait until June 1st to sign?

I see both things posted individually in different places.
If a player is cut with the post-June 1st designation, they are a free agent and can sign with another team right away. They do not have to wait for June 2nd or anything. It is just a bookkeeping designation.

"According to Steelers Depot on X, “Arthur Smith Admits Steelers Didn’t Run His Core Scheme In 2024,” saying, “I Pivoted.” He admitted he had to adjust to the guys he had, not the system he prefers. The offensive coordinator didn’t want to force a scheme that didn’t fit. So he played it safe.

It was obvious watching it wasn’t his scheme. He wants to be a heavy play action under center attacking mof on in breaking routes using zone running scheme. Fields cant handle a snap under center still. RW can’t see over the line in the mof. He also had a power rb and limited wr options

Well, will AR and MR be able to take a snap from under center?

Released and free to sign.

If what I felt would never happen, happened, I am hoping the same goes for the Steelers with Tomlin and they do away with that wankbucket like they did Sulliturd.

Then maybe Tomlin goes and becomes the Ravens coach and we can all collectively laugh our asses off.

The 2026 draft has some truly gargantuan human beings.

And Mike Tomlin, with the retirement of Pop, is the longest tenured head coach in North America.

No one in their right mind would play it THAT safe

I'm kind of there also...I think Artie's system sucks. It's predicated on having a game manager and TE's. How hard can this possibly f***ing be?

Football players needs to get smarter. THese coaches need to make schemes that are actually interesting to watch. If you can't come in and run a scheme in a year, the scheme is too difficult or the people trying to execute are too stupid. One or the other.

At some point in Smith's time with Atlanta, Smith said Mariota was complaining about how hard it was to learn the system and who this was a good thing as it meant he was being stretched hard enough.

I don't really know what to draw from that. Whether Smith's system is complicated, whether Mariota is stupid, or what... that said, a system that's only really worked with one of the... six? QBs to try it raises questions. Personnel quality has obviously been an issue but I'm not sure that's definitely the be all and end all of thr struggles.

His system is not anything new. You see parts in san Francisco and greenbay. Purdy says he struggles seeing his wr breaking open because he is short.,

Mariota got a 33 on the Wonderlic. If it's that complicated it needs to be dumbed down.

"Kenny Pickett has the worst career passing touchdown percentage by a quarterback when throwing 500+ pass attempts, at 2.0 percent".

I'm a Steelers fan but I'm surprised more Pitt fans don't question Tomlin's last 8 seasons. They lost the last 4 games last year, Mike threw Pickett out there for 2 years although he has the lowest TD% of all time and is one of the worst NFL QBs ever, and the Steelers have lost in the first round eight years in a row. Is anyone ever gonna question Tomlin's last eight years.

"Instead, Rodgers was sipping mint juleps at Churchill Downs, rocking a dapper Derby Day suit, and—according to fans—ghosting Mike Tomlin harder than a Tinder date".
Or, rich and famous dude hangs out at a highly publicized event with other rich and famous types on a day when it didn’t matter what his professional football plans were.

I mean, didn’t hear me wrong, I’m ambivalent at best about the idea of A-Aron playing QB for the Steelers this coming season. But what he did for the Derby is pretty immaterial.

I legitimately cannot care less about what Aaron Rodgers is doing in his free time.

I just want him to sign with the Steelers and be able to throw a football well.

If Pickens wants to stay in Pittsburgh, I think you just re-sign him and figure out how to scheme Metcalf and Pickens so they complement each other a bit more.

In a perfect world, I would like them to be able to re-sign Pickens just so that’s one less need they have to worry about next offseason.

You gotta imagine he needs to show a lot of growth maturity wise next year before anyone is comfortable throwing 25+ million at him.

Yes, i would love to offer him the Higgins 110/4 extension in august but the organization is probably gonna make him play out the rookie contract than tag him

Have you been in a coma for 2 years? He has proven for 2 years that he can't throw a football or stay healthy.

Tbh, I've wanted Pickens gone since he quit on his route in the final drive of the game vs the Cowboys. He's done nothing since to change my mind. Wanting him gone is a hatred of quitters but I'd also add that his actions say far bigger and more intractable emotional problems than simple immaturity, and they also contribute to the fact that Pickens' actual overall impact on helping the team win is not all that amazing. His talent is amazing, his play last season wasn't.

And him flirting with a trade request before deciding he loves Tomlin too much doesn't fill me with faith that he's actually going to actually act like he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. That's some one foot out of the door stuff.

But... if he makes it easy for the team to sign him and they want to roll with his talent, sure, whatever.

I'm still inclined to think the team's words and actions suggest they're pretty darn sour on him though.

Same. He's just not good for business. He's not good for the room. His volatility alone. Imagine never knowing what your teammate is going to say to bring focus on your work. It's kind of tiring.
