OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Ploff wins?!? Fire Tomlin

Drafting a backup QB is a luxury pick that I don't think the Steelers can really afford at the moment. If he's a project QB with starter upside, that's different, but I'd pass on anyone who's ceiling projects as a career backup unless it's a 6th or 7th rounder. Just go sign a career journeyman or a castoff. Backup QB really only matters for true contenders who might need one to step in for a few games here or there. That ain't the Steelers.

If Fields stays, he's going to get a multi-year deal. Based on his play this year, I really don't think Fields is going to be so bad that it's a "OMG, we need to get rid of this guy pronto" situation. So he's still likely to be the starter going into 2026 with the guy they draft in 2026 as the QB of the Future.

I think they will like Cam Ward a lot. He seems like a Tomlin guy. He need about 2 years of time. He will be 23 in May. Fields gets a 3 year deal, and they can determine in year 3 what direction they want to go. Ward does actually play the small ball game extraordinarily well, so if we are stuck with Tomlin...

Just go up and get him now, I guess.

we aren’t in a position to get in a bidding war if Tennessee moves the pick

Agreed. I want them to draft a Qb in the 4th-7th round that has starter upside. Say no to Landry Jones types.

Yeah.....I can't even imagine the cost to go from 21 to 1.......

Looking at a draft pick calculator, I don't think it is possible without them trading multiple players as well as (3) 1sts and some 2nds and 3rds.

He's QB1 with a QB needy top 5 draft order. Just not practical to move up that high.

And a guy being available post round 1 these days tells you it's one hell of a project.

Honestly, way the NFL is, I feel like all QBs between Rounds 2 and 5 aren't worth the candle compared to what you hope a QB is vs what you can get in those rounds. I'd take shots in the 1st round, I'd take shots in the last two where it's all a crap shoot, but acting like the team can spot the gems in the trash in rounds 3/4? Eh. Not for me, not when there's still a decent shot at guys you'll get a lot of use from out there.

I do wonder how serious they are about trading Minkah. Trading Minkah and George...this is a good draft to have high picks.

Have there been reports about that? I didn't see that.

I don't know what the dead cap implications would be of trading Minkah, but he's an obvious guy to trade with how his game has declined IMO. I doubt you're getting anything great in value for him but he's regressing and they should be looking to replace him at this point.

I guess the question is whether he's declined or if he's being used differently. They certainly don't need to pay anyone $20M+ a year to be Darren Perry, something they are currently doing.

The 2024 season is still cooling. There was an article summarizing the results of the season, and Minkah wasn't cutting the mustard. It sort of passed the eye test to me also. I don't think he has been that impactful in 2-3 years.

That being said, he's 28. He's definitely a leader in the room - which is also kind of a problem to me because the team has generally lacked leadership, IMO. The wheels fell off 2 years in a row. That falls on coaching but also the guys Tomlin has entrusted to push his mission forward.

I saw the article on PFF but I couldn't see the prices. I don't want Moore, Najee or Russ back no matter what and especially at those prices.

I'm kinda getting scared that Fields will leave and then they feel Russ is the only option and they resign him. I would be getting Fields signed ASAP. At that price it is a no brainer.

The price for Daniels, is a no brainer as well. I'd sign him for that. He is still young and even as a backup that is not a terrible price. But I am not privy to his rehab etc. but a lot of the other guys in his orbit are recovering from injuries as well. Though an Achilles ain't great. Much easier to recover from a broken tibia like Will Fries.

I think you 100% re-sign Daniels if he's signing for 1 year, $5.5 million. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Give Fields 2 or 3 years at that money and keep Daniels at that contract. Let the rest walk.

Oh yeah Daniels back at a somewhat cheap price would be a great move. Tough injury to come back from but he was legitimately very good. I think if Arthur Smith doesn’t get the Jets job (and it doesn’t look like he will), Fields will be back.

Looking at that list from PFF, Asante Samuel Jr feels like a Steelers target. Young, has the NFL bloodline they love, and I know there was draft interest in him.

Fields 1 for 11m
Daniels 1 for 5.5m
Moore 3 years 40m
Najee 3 years 34m lol

Don't even think twice. He was THE BEST graded lineman in the NFL before he got hurt. He was putting it together.

The only report I've seen is one of the beat reporters (I think Fittipaldo) saying he expects them to give Minkah one more year.

I think I'd at least field calls and maybe casually ask teams what they think he's worth but that doesn't seem like a very Steelers thing to do.

Tbh, knowing full well this'll sort alarmist... I wouldn't be utterly surprised if the next Steelers player to blow up because they think the difference between what their stat line is and what it could be is on the team and damaging their career is Fitzpatrick.

Some other interesting players from that PFF FA predictions:

-Higgins: 4 years, $28 million a year
-Godwin: 3 years, $20 million a year
-Cooper: 2 years, $15 million a year
-Diggs: 1 year, $15 million a year

I don't want Diggs because he's a lockeroom issue but Godwin (or Adams at a similar contract) would be great. I'm holding out hope that they sign either Godwin or Adams as a free agent, I'm indifferent whether they keep Pickens or trade Pickens and draft a WR high.

Samuels doesn’t tackle. I think Murphy makes more sense
I hope hufunga is brought in for the kaze role
I am wondering if Greenbay moves off Jaire he is 28 and a stud cb when healthy.

Neither does Donte Jackson and they still liked him.

I just think all leadership for this team needs to be changed. From t he sidelines to the field, it has been totally underwhelming.

Cam Ward? He’s going to be a top 3 pick. Steelers don’t have the capital to make a move to get him.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I don't find Cam Ward as impressive as a prospect. I could very well see him tumbling after the combine, because there are going to be more than average amount of guys who put together insane combine performances this year. Insane specimens and I don't think any of the QBs are good enough to take a flyer on with a high pick.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t consider trading minka

And he isn’t getting another contract cause he can’t play m2m

Mmm I wouldn’t be so sure on that. I don’t think he’ll get a big contract but I would not be surprised if they sign him to a cheap extension.

They also knew (or should have known) that he couldn’t play man to man or tackle when they traded for him.
