Drafting a backup QB is a luxury pick that I don't think the Steelers can really afford at the moment. If he's a project QB with starter upside, that's different, but I'd pass on anyone who's ceiling projects as a career backup unless it's a 6th or 7th rounder. Just go sign a career journeyman or a castoff. Backup QB really only matters for true contenders who might need one to step in for a few games here or there. That ain't the Steelers.
If Fields stays, he's going to get a multi-year deal. Based on his play this year, I really don't think Fields is going to be so bad that it's a "OMG, we need to get rid of this guy pronto" situation. So he's still likely to be the starter going into 2026 with the guy they draft in 2026 as the QB of the Future.
