OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: Off Season We dont need a QB Edition

I still think he's going to sign here, just not till like June mandatory minicamp.

Not that it really matters, but him arriving that late really reduces the chance of him developing the sort of fine detail and chemistry that'll allow him to be the guy they hope he is.

My bad, I forgot about this Rooney quote: Steelers' Art Rooney II on Aaron Rodgers pursuit: 'All signs are positive' QB is headed to Pittsburgh

But I still don't see why this is problematic though.

Still works though. The Steelers are confident that Rodgers wants to play for them from their interactions and are confident that his personal matters will be resolved before too long. We'll find out if that's true, but nothing Rodgers has said contradicts it.

Why? I'm pretty sure teams don't start installing their offense until the vet mandatory minicamp in June. The OTA's are basically just conditioning shit and players are not required to show up per the CBA. Dates are set for 2025 OTAs, minicamp

And I mean he's already had a throwing session with DKM to work on that chemistry.

In my mind, one off-season isn't really enough for a QB - even a veteran QB - to really get everything done to the level required. He's gonna need a lot more than one session to work on the chemistry. Even with as light as OTAs are, that's still time I don't think he can afford to miss with everything brand new.

I might be wrong, but I note that Brady decided to go back to OTAs his first season in Tampa. If he reckoned he needed to do that on a new team, I reckon Rodgers needs to too.

Rodgers is using his leverage and waiting until after the draft to sign. It’s a smart move considering the Steelers are in the sweet spot to take a QB in round 1 if they want to. Frankly, I hope they just tank and are positioned to draft a tier 1 QB in 2026 instead of a tier 2 or 3 guy this year.

I don't know, I just personally don't place a ton of emphasis on those May practices. The teams really are restricted from doing a lot in those sessions. These guys are multimillionaire professional athletes, they have the resources to meet whenever and wherever they want in the offseason. I expect that if he does sign here, he'll organize something in Florida or California like Russ and Pickett did in years past.

But yeah, there's going to come a point where the Steelers are like... "nah, you're taking too long we're no longer interested." Rooney said as much. I just don't think we're close to that point yet.

For me he's sufficiently behind the eight ball you'd hope for both. Maybe I'm overegging the difficulty of being a first season QB, but I think establishing that comfort level is hard and he's got to work harder than a lot of other guys to get it there.

Yeah to both and don't take me saying this for thinking it's coming soon. Even if he misses OTAs he's still probably a better bet than Carson Wentz or whoever. Just I think it's decidedly not ideal.

I mean would Rodgers missing an off-season of workouts be better than Wentz if Wentz spent all off-season preparing for the NFL? I'm just not sure if that is the case.

I'm less concerned with when Rodgers actually signs and more concerned whether these personal issues will prevent him from effectively preparing for the season.

Exactly he missed Jets practice last season because he was in Eqypt on a trip. Let him to what ever he wants to do before he signs so he is focused on football

Maybe, maybe not. But the difference isn't enough to get impatient with Rodgers to go looking for other guys. That's my point. Him maybe being late to rehearsals is something the team can live with given the alternatives. It's not good in and of itself, but then neither are the other options.

Just finished listening to the Rodgers Pat Macafee interview. Rodgers hiding behind the excuse of “someone going thru something in his inner circle” is the biggest load of bs I’ve ever heard.

i think a QB at a high level HS program would pick up this offense fairly quickly. Never mind a 14 time all pro, 4 time NFL mvp, 23 year veeran.

any concern I have with rodger is if he physically do the things he's done in the past. thats the biggest question mark

If they want to draft someone who will likely be a career back-up on day 3 of the draft that's fine. But they shouldn't be spending a 1st on any of this draft's QBs.
Dart and Milroe are the 2 they spent the most on . If they had a 2nd I would bet Milroe was the 2nd round pick. I think they end up with Howard Ewers or Mccord day 3

Dulac:

The Steelers have a first-round grade on Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, who was one of the team’s 30 predraft visits to the South Side. And they really like the uber-athletic Shedeur Sanders, who also came in for a visit and looks to be dropping on draft boards.

The other quarterbacks they visited on their respective pro days — Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Ohio State’s Will Howard, Texas’ Quinn Ewers and Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard — would appear to be second-day picks at best. Same with Tyler Shough of Louisville and Kyle McCord of Syracuse, each of whom was also a predraft visitor to the South Side.
