But the overall philosophy damned them from the beginning. They continued to run on 1st and 2nd downs despite being behind.

All QB's are going to miss some throws. And the obvious times we decided to throw, RW had pressure. The players did execute, but this gameplan did the offense no favors
It was a similar gameplan they used against the bengals the 1st time the with built off plays because Smith anticipated the lb would jump on the najee jump offs

And that’s why the Steelers continue to lose regularly at the end of the season and particularly lose playoff games lol…

NHALS and the late season collapses are related.

I think Tomlin runs ultra-conservative and relatively simple schemes. Early in the year, they execute at a higher level than teams learning more complex designs. But later in the year, those other teams have become more fundamentally sound in a scheme that gets more out of the talent.

Tomlin gets away with this because he's the only coach in the league that doesn't have a mandate to win playoff games. That allows him to take a high floor with his schemes, and be a little less mediocre than average. But a "high floor" isn't taking them anywhere in the playoffs.

Also when you game plan to be in one score games a fumble here and a fumble there really kills you.

It’s why Tomlin lives in his fears hasn’t featured Warren over Harris.

If you have a big boy offense that moves the ball and scores with consistency you don’t need to worry about the occasional turn over nearly as much.
I just don't think you guys really appreciate the Steelers vaunted... "1 YARD AND A CLOUD OF DUST" Offensive Scheme.

Not with smith they will draft a te before a wr.
Ca3 and Wilson plus Ben will be wr 3 4 and 5

This presumes Smith doesn't get another HC job
Even if he doesn't, you shouldn't be organizing your draft philosophy ENTIRELY around a OC who might not be here long term.

That's a myopic view of drafting.

Furthermore, Van Jefferson shouldn't even be on the team. Your dumb ass "packages" are sub optimal
This offense went from about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 to about a 5 this year. It's still Neanderthal and won't win you any playoff games.

Here's the thing

As it sits now they need another WR
Depending how the GP saga plays out, they might need 2. That to me screams WR will be in play for the draft.

They need 2 WRs even if Pickens stays, unless they somehow manage to pull off Higgins.

Pickens, Higgins and Austin would be a solid top-3 WR group, but any guy they draft very likely won't be ready to be a WR2 out of the gate. That's a big reason I think the Hopkins UFA signing and Bond pick in round 1 idea is a fairly realistic idea for what this team will do.

Well Mike Tomlin knows football better than anyone on the planet. Just ask him.

But it's both Offense and Defense. Vs Philly & Baltimore, it was largely about the talent differential. KC game they were seriously out-strategized and out-coached. Plus, it has to be obvious now that TJ Watt is nowhere near healthy, and I don't even mean his ankle. I would rather see the other 3 give it their all for 60 than watch TJ try to play when he can't do his usual stuff. We know the ankle is less than 100%, he has a thumb injury that keeps him from gripping with both hands... who knows what else is happening with him.

But, as I've been saying for what seems like forever now: the biggest problems they have are the Head Coach's mentality about how to plan for and play the games and the ownership's buy in because they think coaching continuity and running the shit out of the ball with a paper tiger defense is "The Steeler Way".

I kind of agree with you, but I promise if you gave Tomlin truth serum he'd say they only need 1 WR currently. This is why we'll forever be in a different tier and never sniff an AFCCG with Tomlin

For the past 10 years its essentially been this:

Elite Teams (typically 2 to 5 each year)
Steelers
Garbage teams like the Browns/Jags/Jets

I hope you know I was being sarcastic... funny enough people on this board really believe rolling back Wilson, a good draft, and some great FA pickups and this "Offense" will really sing....

This will always be a mediocre football team with Tomlin in charge. Too comfortable, and he was never a top football mind. He hasn't been able to/can't find assistants who want to come in and cover for him ... how many from his coaching tree?
Ex: Why in the f*** did he keep his OLINE coach from last year?
Ex: Beyond coaches, when was the last time he's developed a PLAYER? Years of no #2-7s never rising up is not just the FO.

Funny enough, they have lost 4 in a row. They are all getting paid and I would give them a punchers chance to Win in Baltimore. If Baltimore plays their A game we are sunk but ... if it's anything less it will be close.

Anyway, I don't even watch much... just see the highlights and laugh. My dad put 1,000 dollars on them Winning the Division and was talking shit to me until the inevitable Tomlin slide. Now, he's just like, "You've called it for 5 years..."

Re the bolded: They are even more scared of change than they are of throwing the ball on 1st down. They will UNDOUBTEDLY bring back at least one of Wilson/Fields, and maybe both.

It’s not even a 3 by 1 thing. Prutt and Heyward are useless on offense. Washington might be better off transitioning to OT because he can’t run as a TE. You can be multiple they want to be heavy play action like Detroit and the 49ers though Fields maybe be better suited in a rpo system like rhe eagles use.

Seems Mr scheffler got a call after his initial on-air statement
Tomlin does have a strong media response team
Anything negative seems to be countered almost immediately
That doesn’t happen when they bad mouth McCarthy or mayo or just about any other coach

Pickens has to go, too. I don't even care anymore if they end up getting pennies on the dollar. He's actively a problem not only off the field, but on the field, too. He hasn't even been paid yet. If he could have held it together after Tomlin said he needs to grow up, I would have been more willing to give him an extension, but it's only got worse since then. No way I extend him now and imagine how ugly things will get if/when he holds out because they won't give him a new deal.

If I'm the Bills I send the Steelers a 3rd to 5th round pick. Still on his rookie deal. Buffalo also has 2 second round picks this year so they can absorb this.

He'd make sweet magic with Josh Allen.

He also changed his profile pic to a photoshop of his head on the picture of AB peacing out of the game with the Bucs

He’s such a massive piece of shit though so I hope the Steelers stay far away.
Related to this. Andy Reid, Ben Johnson, O Connell or McDaniels would be able to make CA3, Tyrek Hill-lite.

Dead serious that Austin is severely underutilized here.

They already have Coleman and Shakar. They like spreading the ball around. They moved off Diggs because Allen had to force it to Diggs

Austin gets open but RW doesn’t throw it to his 2nd read

If the Steelers trade Pickens, I don't think he's going to end up on a good team for two reasons

1) He's a massive headache in a contract year with a tendency to make big on field mistakes. Massive talent or no, that's deeply unattractive
2) I suspect that if he's got a choice, Khan will Carolina Pickens.

My guess is he ends up somewhere with an off-field staff under serious pressure with a QB with few weapons. Jacksonville or the Giants sound very likely to me.
