The perils of being a fan of a multiple Cup-winning team.

Ordered a replica Kings 2014 Stanley Cup from Amazon. Just got it today. It's the 2012 version. Oh, the problems that occur when your team wins numerous Cups.

:sarcasm:

As an Oilers fan, I thought I'd chime in.

IN the 80s, we took our team for granted and thought we were invincible. But like Mac-T said, sports is "cyclical in nature" and according to him, the Oilers are "still paying the price for the cups they won in the 80s"

Point is, cherish your glory as much as you can because maybe in 20-30 years, you'll become the hopeless dispair just like what the Oilers are right now.

We've spent 45 years in hopeless despair. Maybe the laws of averages are finally starting to even things out for the Kings. But Kings fans know darn well what it means to have very little hope for a bright future

Aside from a handful of years, Kings hockey has always been hopeless.

Our situation is the opposite of yours. We paid for ours upfront and waited an indefinite amount of time. And we've only won two in three years, not five or whatever. You guys are just greedy is all.

My problem is I got 2014 cup but it's made by a different company so is different from the 2012 (medal and slightly shorter) ...im tempted to re-order.. am I nuts?

Personally any championship "collectable" is junk to me unless there's a longstanding tradition behind them where year after year the champions get these items. Or if it's legitimately signed by someone on that team from that time...

That's why I like hockey cards, they have all that.

The mo Cups we come across the mo problems we see.

If anything, more responsibilities, courtesy of the league itself. The LA Kings are in position to be the team to legitimize West Coast Hockey and up for that challenge.

Thanks for the wise words, however, I notice the Oilers and the Kings have completely different origins, roles, and aspirations.

The Oilers never won the Avco Cup in the WHA, and just became hungrier and thirstier in the NHL upon arrival. End result? Western Canada's NHL dynasty and the much-earned title, "Alberta's Team." Just reading upon the Oilers' history and it's been implied the Oilers were out there to legitimize the NHL in Western Canada.

Yes, MacTarvish is both correct and incorrect. Yes, sports is cyclical, but he's also incorrect that the Oilers are doomed to be at the bottom. It's just front office mismanagement, plain and simple.

The LA Kings, on the other hand, emerged as an Expansion Six team, with the task of introducing (by virtue of being an Expansion Six team), popularizing (Wayne Gretzky era), and now, legitimizing West Coast Hockey in the NHL.

Thanks for the visit, but don't the Oilers have a 40th Anniversary to make it "super-special awesome!" in 2019? Instead of sinking yourselves in despair, why not set something realistic along the way and build it up year after year?

Honestly, I just do not want the LA Kings to repeat the same mistakes of the past and am just happy to know the team is in perfect position to make NHL history.

Contemplating and answering the comments and questions from people, including some Kings fans, regarding our "window of opportunity" to win additional Stanley Cups and possibly earn dynasty status.

My response: "That's not a window, it's a barn door."

I agree with you on the caps and the t-shirts, I just can't find one that I really like, so I have never ordered one. I do have four Kings caps now of various types, and a jersey (without the Final patch). So I am not flaunting the titles.

The 8-inch replica Cups are ****ing awesome. I have one each for 2012 and 2014 (see pic below) and I gave one of the 2012 to each of my kids and my ex and one 2014 to a friend and they all loved them.

And it's wide open.

the Oilers are "still paying the price for the cups they won in the 80s".

not trying to be a dick or pile on, but....

this is one of the lamest excuses i have seen. what connection to 1990 (the most recent) and 2014 have to do with this?

the only connection i can think of us is just poor upper management (ownership) decisions, which lead to even worse decisions by upper management (GM, scouts, etc) that trickled down to the coaches and eventually to the on ice product.

none of that 'trickle down' has anything remotely to do with what the Oilers accomplished from '84 - '90.

it is what it is....poor ownership and management by the club's executives. look at other teams in a similar fashion. does this mean the Leafs can make the same argument because they last won the Cup in '67?

what an assinine comment to make. how about simply stating "the team from top to bottom has made decisions dating back 20+ years, that has lead to its current lack of success." that is what is at the heart of the matter.

the Oilers Dynasty years had nothing to do with poor coaching decisions, trades/drafts, player development, etc. once the last players from the '90 SC team were gone, any and all connection or correlation to those years became extinct.

his statement is nothing more than an excuse and trying to lay blame elsewhere

Teams like the Oilers of the 80's probably won't ever exist again. Loaded with future hall of famers, got the best player in the world for $700,000 from a folding team in a folding league, it was the perfect storm. You have to take solace in 4 straight cups and 5 overall, that's impressive enough and we also probably won't ever see an NHL team win 4 in a row. Might only be possible in baseball since they don't have a salary cap.
