The Panthers November Schedule is Weird

I was looking at the Schedules for the Atlantic division teams and I got to Florida and their schedule is weird.

In November they play consecutive games against Dallas, Winnipeg, NJ and Carolina, and they do it again in December against Tampa.

Every team has back to backs but they usually aren't against the same team.

Florida plays the same team twice in a row 4 times in November and 5 times in 2 months.

I don't know that I've ever seen such an odd schedule

They do it again in January against the Ducks.

It is weird, but not as weird as Chicago's schedule from 2020 or 2021, I can't recall which season it was. That year, you had Chicago playing against the same 5 or 6 opponents for the entire season.

Apparently Winnipeg had a similar problem although I did not follow their situation.

That is odd nowadays. But it used to be very common, especially with Winnipeg, back in the 1980s and first-half of 1990s. Clubs in the Smythe division (basically now the Pacific) used to go to Winnipeg and play two games in a row in two days. The issue there being Winnipeg's awkward geographical position as a travel destination.

But back then clubs played other divisional clubs 7 or 8 times per season (not including pre-season and playoffs). That's not the case now, so yeah, it's pretty rare to see that.

Maybe there's some special long-term scheduling thing with the Panthers' arena at some point where it's unavailable for a long time? Do the Panthers have some unusually long road trips or anything?

That was everybody that year, that was 20-21

Toronto played Montreal and Edmonton 10 times that year.

That’s still the case typically with the geographical issue with Winnipeg. Typically teams (especially eastern conference teams) play back to backs in Minnesota and Winnipeg.

Yeah, the Rangers always have Winnipeg and Minnesota as part of the same road trip, often on back-to-back nights. Sometimes Chicago or Detroit will be thrown into that same trip.

It's rare enough to see one instance of it, but to have multiple in the same month is pretty wild, haha.

The two Dallas games are in Finland, so that's a special case. But the back-to-back home games against NJ is pretty unusual though!

I've been seeing this more frequently in basketball in the last couple of years and I wouldn't be surprised to see it more often in hockey. It's just a travel thing.

The Devils play their only away game against Tampa right after that. Why go down to Florida twice?

There are just 2 concerts in their arena for Nov. Heck, from when the season begins after the first week in Oct, there are just 5 other events from the start of the NHL season to the end of December in the Panthers arena. And only 1 other event in 2025 before the end of their season. Maybe they get more as the weeks and months pass, but based on what has been booked, the Panthers basically had their choice of home dates to provide the NHL to setup their schedule. But, they can't control where and when the NHL sends them when they are on the road.

Senators around Christmas are on a 2 1/2 week road trip, but that’s because of the world juniors.

You are not going to believe the insane schedule they played in 2004/2005

The Leafs have never had a hockey game scheduled in June, that's weird

If you want to get under my skin, you should have said the Kraken :( .

THIS IS OUR YEAR!

I do love when people seeing me wear my Mariners gear around Denver and they'll say "hey, the Mariners suck", or something similar. And I'll say "well no shit, I've been doing this for over forty years - you think I don't know that we suck?"

I wonder if part of it has to do with increased drawing power as defending champs. My guess is there are many instances where this would be logistically desirable, but the attendance would be expected to drop on night 2 in a back to back vs the same opponent.

Seems like the back-to-back games are home games for Florida, so I don't think them being a higher gate draw due to being defending champs would have anything to do with it.

The only odd one is NJ as they play both games in Sunrise.

They did B2Bs vs. the same team in the COVID season to limit exposure and travel and I'm kinda surprised they didn't just adopt it more often to reduce travel. Like I'm surprised the NHLPA didn't fight for it.

What's November 1st ? Memorial day ?

Of those 8 games Florida is at home for 6 of them. That's a little odd, as you would assume it would be home-and-home.

I remember when Arizona and St. Louis played each other 7 times in a row because of that schedule.
The original schedule for that shortened season had the 8 Blues and Coyotes games in four well-separated pairs. It was a series of cancellations and reschedulings that forced that schedule juggling and the resulting 7-in-a-row stretch.
