OT: The OT Thread: Has spring really sprung? (Warning in post 368)

When spring walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in my face, I get sprung.

I hate to disagree with you here, but as I live in one of the few cost effectives areas in DC, and thus, around a lot of federal workers from the lower paying agencies, ie, USAID and DoEd, I can tell you that a large number of DC based USAID people are those who spent their 20s and often much their 30s in country in “dirt under your fingernails” type roles, often in war torn countries, but have rotated back stateside to have families, getting leadership roles.

I won’t for one second disagree that there is government bloat, but this hack and slash approach is throwing the baby out with the bath water. The impact of cutting so many people will be felt primarily in the poorest places on earth, by the most vulnerable.

And the individual tax savings will be minimal. The impact of cutting 200k feds, if you make $174,999.00/yr, will be about $23 on your federal income taxes. Scale up or down based on income, but, in general, you aren’t going to impact individual federal taxes significantly without dramatic cuts to Medicare, Social Security, or defense, which account. For nearly 75% of federal spending collectively, and none of which, imo, should be cut.

My experience with DoS people is that they waste a shitload of money, and don’t do very much, but it’s a small sample size for me personally. I just have a lot of USAID and DoEd friends who are capable and experienced, and few have survived these cuts.
On an individual basis, some of the stories are wrong or heartbreaking. But with experience in these countries, the vast majority of DoS workers come over, rarely leaving the US compound.

Honestly, it’s not much different than admin and logistics DoD units who “deployed” to big airbases like Bilad or Bagram, taking cover from a few stray mortar rounds, and got their “combat time.”

That’s a far cry from living in a hut made of hesco baskets (dirt) and going on patrol daily. There’s admittedly resentment there. But if I had a conversation with a DoS worker who had “dirt under their fingernails,” chances are it isn’t what you think it is. Certainly not what was outlined in The Ugly American.

Watching through "The Bear" the past few weeks, inspiring me to take a trip back to Chicago with the family in June. Since we are taking the kids, going to be doing the dumb touristy kid friendly stuff, but they will love it. The wife doesn't want to take them to a Cubs game....but we're going. They have multiple afternoon games while we are going to be there.

My wife is from chi town. We've made a ton of trips there. Fun place to visit. Also, we're a few episodes into season 1 of the Bear. Awesome show thus far.

They film in Chicago so seeing all the CTA busses and trains brings me back. And you can tell they actually have Chicago-ans on the script writing team because they don't make obvious mistakes you see when someone who has only been there as a tourist writes a script.

Well, Saturday was a real high and low day.

Nate and his team finally got to play their opener at Alfred University. They have a really young team and Nate wasn't sure he was going to play because he felt like the other goalie was playing better in practice. But, they get along great and he was fine if Blake started.

But, Nate got the start. I didn't expect them to win. I was just happy to see them play and get to hang out with the parents as the ones we have coming back are good people.

Then their most experienced starting D took a shot to the side of his helmet and was out with a likely concussion.

And then late in the second quarter, Nate went down screaming with what looked like an ankle injury.

Blake came in and played well the rest of the way.

Nate was getting treatment on the ankle and was optimistic after the game. It really hurt him yesterday and he may go and get some crutches before class today.

It sucks having him be a couple of hours away and feeling like I can't do anything. With the start of the season getting pushed back, they have a lot of Wed/Sat gamedays moving forward. So, he could miss close to half the season if he is out a couple of weeks.

The good things are that he is tough and will play through pain and speed and athleticism isn't a huge part of his game.

I also told him I was proud that his teammates kept checking in on him and they cared about him and that two of the refs checked on him at halftime. One of the refs had ref'd him in HS and he remembered him.

That being a good teammate and being a good sportsman stuff is way more important to me as a dad than him making saves.

SC had a tornado yesterday morning. It was a strong EF-0, weak EF-1, so not a huge threat. It dissipated across the street from my house, about 10 houses down in my neighborhood. Fortunately not a lot of damage and no one hurt.
