Buffalo Bills The offseason begins — NFL draft Apr. 24-26

THE BEAST has dropped!!!!!!

Trepasso Full 7 Round Mock below.
Chris is usually plugged in to what the Bill's might be thinking as much as anyone (Joe B ie) out there (and "maybe" even a lurker here ? :sarcasm: ) Saying that, this one is a bit meh first glance for me (sorry Chris). I will be interested to see the rest of opinions here.

He loves Revel (cb)
Thinks the safety class is top heavy (Starks, Emmanwori, Reed)
Ala QB Milrow "could" go 1st round

When I first starting mocking prior to the Senior Bowl, Revel ended up being the pick I made for the Bills around half the time, maybe better.

Royals has been one of my favorites for this coming draft.

I seriously doubt Nolen’s playing weight is 296. And he’s super young. Just turned 21. He’ll add weight. But but his natural strength makes him a ridiculous prospect. That said, based on some smart people I follow, Nolen isn’t sniffing 30.

He was a 3TDT at Ole Miss and that profile reads way more like Ed Oliver than DaQuan Jones to me.

the most talented DT on a college roster nearly always plays 3 tech. Nolen had basically the same gap responsibility at Tyliek Williams who nobody thinks is a 3 tech.

My point was, Nolen is the most physically gifted DT in this draft, and Beane has a habit of drafting the best player and then seeing how the player fits in the scheme. On obvious run downs, no. Could he be a 0 tech pure two gapper, no. But shading the guard, and taking on blocks is something he could handle. And on obvious passing downs, he can pin his ears back and rush as well as any prospect in this draft. He’s not small, and he has the frame to add more. Ed Oliver is severely undersized. Walter Nolen is not.

It’s all moot. He’s not making it 30. I doubt he gets out of the top 20. Bills should trade down, target a CB. Hope to get Tyliek Williams or Alfred Collins in the 2nd, or CJ West or Josh Farmer later.

Also of note, the report makes no mention of the fact that Nolen has the best bull rush in the draft. Which is not what Oliver does. That’s a pretty lazy scouting report if you ask me. Nolen regularly takes on double teams. If it were me, I just simply watch his games/highlights/all 22 and just make my own conclusions about his play.

  • Versatile defender who can align anywhere from 0 to 5-technique, giving defensive coordinators flexibility in how to deploy him situationally

Ideal Scheme Fit, Role

Walter Nolen projects best as a penetration 3-tech at the NFL level. His first-step quickness, core strength, and center of gravity make him an attractive option to fire upfield and create chaos in the backfield.

There’s plenty of reason to buy in on Nolen developing in different style defenses, but his best role as a current product lies in getting through gaps and forcing reroutes of the quarterback and running backs off their track.

I haven't found a single draft profile of Nolen that says his idea fit in the NFL is as a 1TDT, even in a scheme like the Bills play.

I could see him playing next to Oliver on long and late downs. But, I doubt a Oliver-Nolen duo would hold up well against the run if they played them together on a regular basis.

Highly recommend this podcast episode for anyone hoping the bills go DL early in the draft. They go through all the top guys then also have some healthy debate between Brugler and Duffy over a handful of players they’re very far apart on.

No idea why I started The Beast with RBs, but there's a cluster in Round 4-5 that I like (interesting that Brugler had Cook as a 4th in 2022).

Lequint Allen, Brashard Smith, Jaydon Blue, and Donovan Edwards. Edwards especially sounds eerily similar to Cook, just got caught up in the churn of a big program as a 4-star recruit.

The wise move is to play out Cook and take the comp pick next year, but I'd probably take a 3rd now to avoid the potential distraction.

The episode on the most polarizing guys in the draft was really good, too.

Bond (Texas) accused of SA. Released on bond. Surely this will effect his draft status, maybe even goes undrafted?! Late round pick? Poor timing but if it's false accusation a team could get him in the 5th or later..

Looking at who the Bills are interviewing, etc, the combo of trade down from 30 and trade up from the 4th round to get as many 2nds and 3rds continues to be what I’d try to do in this draft.

An outline plan, just to show how this could be done:

30 to New Orleans for 40 and 93.
108 and 171 to Rams for 100.

Ran a quick PFF draft where I controlled the Bills, Saints, and Rams to show what this could yield.

40: Trey Amos, CB
56: Jared Ivey, DE
62: CJ West, DT
93: Charles Grant, OT
100: Isaiah Bond, WR

Then pick again at 131, 175, 179, 206, 208.

If Beane moves 131 and 179 he can get to 117 and pick higher the the 4th, which is what I’d try for at the start of day 3. I’d look at a player like Billy Bowman for that pick.

Basically the plan is to amass picks between 35 and 120 to address needs. This is a “starter” draft not a “star” draft, and there could be a lot of solid contributors available in those slots.

Joe Marino talked about him this morning and I am all in on him as a 5th/6th round pick that is a fit for the Mack Hollins role as a WR5 who can get deep, is a good blocker in the run games, and can play a lot on STs.

I also love the fact that over his two seasons at Arkansas, he dropped 0 passes.

I wouldn't want the Bills to draft Bond.

Someone I trust told me that not only does he have this warrant for DV, he has multiple women that have gotten orders of protection against him.

Hard pass.

Interesting about Paul. Their LB room feels...incomplete. They have two injury prone LBs, and while Williams has shown flashes at Will, there's nothing much behind Bernard. Plus, they owe Milano nothing after this year, and Bernard nothing after next. A second rounder is probably too big of an investment, but LB is an under the radar target if they end up with a third round pick somehow.

Bernard and Williams were "nothing much" after their rookie years and took major steps forward in year 2.

The Bills had two rookie depth LBs last year.

I think they could take a LB this year. I also think they really like Bernard and Williams and would be fine if they were the starting LBs next year.

Barring the board lining up such that there is a "can't pass on this guy" LB, I don't see them taking a LB before day three this year.
