After last yr's disaster of a season changes had to be made which included cost cutting measures for this owner. I assume it was determined that the team would rebuild this yr & that EM would not need to put any money into the team but instead cut costs until the team was a contender again, at least I think that was their strategy.
PD started by moving Turris & got a better centre back, then started moving their vets one at a time to save money, reduce payroll & get some assets that would help in the rebuild. They traded Hoffman & EK & got back a number of assets that they could use on the team & in future. They decided to play their young guys & several have emerged as very good players in Chabot, White, Tkachuk & to a lesser degree Lajoie, Harpur, Jaros & Paul. After the disaster of this season changes should continue to be made.
They have a few building blocks who could make an impact next season in Batherson, Chlapik, Brown, Formenton, Wolanin, Hogberg & maybe Balcers & Gustavsson. Then they have Norris, Nurmi & JBD along with the SJ first, along with their own first in 2020 plus any other pick that could come from nowhere to be a player for them. As of now, Ottawa has 8 picks in 7 rds in the 2019 draft, 10 picks in 2020 draft & 8 more picks in the 2021 draft, 23 picks in 3 drafts should replenish their cupboards. They should have more than that if they continue to trade their older players for picks & prospects & they could sign a few more NCAA (free wallets) over the next few seasons.
Of course, the most important part for fans will be whether Duchene & Stone are re-signed along with Dzingel & Ceci to a lesser extent before the end of this season. I imagine if all these changes happen that the team will be expected to contend for a playoff spot by the 2020 season, if all goes right. If not, I expect changes in management at that point, again. It's not all rosy, but neither is it the end of the world, hopefully their prospects turn into the players we all hope they can be & they become a contender again sooner rather than later.
