Rust is a fine player in a vacuum but he's so overrated by the fanbase at large, and treated like some integral player by the coach/franchise that it's not difficult to understand why people are annoyed by him.

Dude can kick rocks imo. Hope he's dealt by next season.

on a similar topic, i went and took a look at how jake is doing in tampa, and he’s his usual ppg but even at best +/- self. and hilariously, this the NEWEST post when i went to the tampa board to see if anyone had anything to say

these two were great in the cup runs but boy did they fall off after and i think pretty much everyone here has been saying it for years. so frustrating when the coach and media clearly considered them totally unimpeachable

That’s no way to talk about a perfectly fine I guess top 9 player.

Rust is a fine player. I don't really get the hate he receives, especially considering he was among our best last year.
Is it cuz he's Sullivan's pet? Ok, but that doesn't change what he is and it's not really something he asked for. His cap hit doesn't change his level either.
If it's about his injuries then fine, but what do you want him to do about it? Are you guys saying he lacks fitness, or is intentionally taking more time off than he needs to?

He's 18th among right wingers since 2019-20 in P/GP. He's good enough to cut it on close to half the 1st lines in the league.
And if not, he is definitely fine in an L2 role. It's very standard to pay those guys 5mil.

He just seems like a whipping boy when the team has way bigger problem players.

This, incidentally, does not make a player good. Anyhow, I'm not saying Rust is bad. Definitely not. He's just mid.

I just want everyone to let this one sink in. It's not like the dude has a chance at scoring 30+/40+ goals ala Jake. The fact he's the promotional figure head now is cringe worthy.

He's Mid off...
Half off, just like his effort when trailing by 1.

I don't really have a unique opinion of Rust. He is what he is. Going forward, would I trade him? Sure, if we can get a good deal. Rust seems to be one of those players whose reputation is probably higher around the league than his actual worth. I also would not have an issue with keeping him. Sullivan loves him, so my instincts would suggest we should deal him because Sullivan probably uses him too much. However, as we have seen, when Dubas trades a Sullivan fave, Sullivan just finds another fave (but a lesser player), so it could be a net-positive to keep Rust.

Not sure that I would want to trade Rakell, either. Sure, he is rebuilding his reputation and that is good. But he is also really good with Crosby. The third player on that line almost seems replaceable as long as those two are together. So again, deal him for a good return but it does not hurt you to keep him, either.

lol..

Yeah, I'm waiting on the "80% of NHL teams and team Sweden wouldn't take Erik Karlsson" thread hah

Someone who's good enough for 1st lines on many teams across the league is not mid.
58 points in 60 games (24g) is outstanding, especially considering low PP1 time.

Mid is the middle. Like a #6 or #7 Forward out of 12 deployed. A tweener who will give you flashes of more but can't sustain it.
Kapanen is mid, career-wise. Rust has proven he's more than that.
He's got 305 points in his last 405 games. 5 seasons and change.

That means he's a 60 point generator per 82 games. Is he really a core issue? One of our highest % shooters on a team that can't shoot?
Yeah ok he slacks defensively sometimes, but so do many others on this team.

His real issue is his availability hurting his numbers and his ineptitude on PP1. But teams pay 5 mil for wingers who don't PP1 all the time.

If we're looking for performance relative to cap hit problems, he's not among the top ones on this team. And there's zero guarantee that you could use that 5 mil better on another winger. Maybe? But the grass always seems greener on the other side.

I think most are referring to him as mid in the sense of the entire league, not on an individual team. In that sense they are right. He’s not a top or bottom tier winger in the NHL.

I mean, if we're treating whatever trash washes up in our top 6 as good, this team is gonna have numbers 1-98 hanging in the rafters by the end of next year.

Some of you may know this man. He is late 80's, early 90's Bryan Rust.

He played on a line with the greatest player to ever play the game, and his stats reflected that fact.

He got traded to Hartford where they did not have the greatest player to ever play the game, and his stats reflected that fact.

So, was Rob Brown a top 6 player who put together 3 30+ goal seasons while playing with the greatest player to ever play the game?

Or was he mid because once he got traded, he never cracked 20 goals again?
