And that is with dressing an entire roster. (2) of the players mentioned would have to move as the Sedins would replace them. I wouldn't be shocked if MDZ was moved either.
 
We have a nice team brewing here and we're talking about long-term expensive contracts for guys age 33-36 like the Sedin twins and Thornton.

Mainly because I'm bored and at work. :laugh:

In all honesty, if Richards leaves, they will most likely sign someone. They will have a lot of free agents and a lot of open spots next season and there are some good players who may be available.

Why would Kreider get a raise? He is currently paid ~$1.3M and has done zilch so far. He'll get a bridge deal at around the same he is earning now.

Moore will get an insubstantial raise, something similar to what Sauer got 1.25x2. Actually, Sauer had done more than Moore will have done so maybe even less.

The raises for our non-arb RFA's will be small, I'm more worried about our UFAs to be. Staal will at least get a $1.5-2M raise. Strålman is an UFA at season's end as well and I'd like to keep him. What will Lundqvist, Callahan, and Girardi command? Brassard?

Keep our core and let it grow together, stay away from big-ticket UFAs.

It's as good a reason as any.

If NYR want to keep Stepan, McDonagh, Girardi, Callahan, ect long term, they will be limited in their options. Ad the last thing you want to do is strap 15 million to two notoriously soft forwards until they are 40 years of age. That's flirting with disaster.

The cap will go up, but I'd like to see a new NYR that are a little less rambunctious in the UFA market, especially on guys in their 30's.

We got Gaborik at 27 which was great, because he had years left in his prime. That kind of thing I don't mind as much. But the number of hockey players like MSL and Selanne are a lot fewer than those who temper off in their mid 30's.
 
I think you'd really have to count on Thornton wanting to come here to play with Nash if you hoped he'd take a reasonable deal. Someone will give him 4+ years at north of $6M if he hits the open market.
 
Thornton? Ha.

Unite him with Nash and you'll have two of the most talented, yet softest, players in the league. I have hope for Nash given his history in a cesspool like Columbus, but Joe Thornton hasn't won a thing in this league despite being presented with multiple opportunities to do so. This is a guy who has never gone the extra mile to win, and would be eaten alive here in NY.

Yeah, I think it all comes down to price and term.

To put it like this, you should not, we should not atleast, build a team around forwards that are getting into their 30's. You need a homegrown core. Or atleast a fresh core. It also takes time to build a team around new guys. So I see zero point in like restructuring the team completely to like get the Sedins.

But, a good player is always a good player, and there is just a helluva diffrence between signing a UFA to be your nr 1 something as opposed to just a strong player.

It was probably more or less impossible under the cap, but if we could have afforded Vinny Lecavalier to the deal Philly got him for, I think it would have made alot of sense. For me, its more or less the same with Joey T.
 
Some team is going to bring in the Sedins as complimentary offensive weapons and win The Cup. Could you imagine:

Damn, I just noticed that Ron Hainsey is still an UFA. I thought he was resigned ages ago. Personally, I've always loved him. Whenever we played the Thrashers/Jets, he was always visible. I'd take him as a 6/7 dman

Thornton is at an age where year to year deals are actually attractive in that you can go to the team that you think provides you the best chance at winning.

Money is no longer an issue for a player of Thornton's ability. It's a factor, but not a driving factor.

He's going to take a pay cut, nothing disgusting, but location, situation and opportunity to win will be the driving forces behind JT's signing.

This has failure written all over it.

wouldn't shock me...depending on the raises that hank, cally, etc guy between the richards buyout and expected cap increase that could free up the $$ lol
 
The Sedin's will re-sign in Vancouver. Why wouldn't they? They like it there. The team likes them. Most of the potential free agents end up staying with their teams. The Canucks have always taken care of them financially. Those guys are a package deal. A team will need significant space to sign both of them. Nobody plays for free. The Rangers will have a hard enough time keeping their own players without complicating things by adding another big ticket player.

Agreed.

But at the same time, I think this season is a very important one for the so-called core of this team. If they flop in a similar fashion to this season, with a new coach, Im sure Sather won't be bashful about knee-jerking his way to significant changes...again.
 
As much as I would love Kessel on this team, if we let go Richards Id think we'd need to get a Top 6 LW and a 2/3 line C with his cap space
 
Don't know if it was mentioned yet but Custance ranked the Rangers D 3rd, behind Chicago and Boston. I'll gladly take that. You know we will rank either the #1 or #2 Goaltender as well. So according to Custance, the Rangers have a top 10 offense, top 5 defense and top 1 or 2 goaltender, all on paper, of course haha. We'll see what happens but I respect Custance.

3. New York Rangers
A healthy Marc Staal lifts this defense from good to great with the top four of Ryan McDonagh, Staal, Dan Girardi and Michael Del Zotto. This is a top four that matches up with any in the league. We'll grant that the Rangers' D thins out at the bottom, but the addition of the strong-skating John Moore at the trade deadline helped address that. Moore is still just 22 years old and developing his skills at the NHL level.

The linchpin to this defense is Staal, and his ability to recover completely from his eye injury may be the key to the Rangers' season. He's part of Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp next week, and it sounds like his summer recovery has been strong. "[Staal]'s a major, major piece to that group," said the scout. "They're really solid. [Anton] Stralman was solid for them. Del Zotto was playing hurt for them in the playoffs. Girardi, McDonagh... those guys are high-end."

3 is nothing to scoff at... but the reason is kinda weird that he puts that out D "thins out" at the bottom. John Moore and Anton Stralman is a GREAT 3rd pairing on defense,Falk as the 7th D? How does it "thin out"?
