The number zero (0 or 00)

I have a friend from high school (I even dated him for a bit) who was a goalie in lacrosse. Most of his online usernames and such were variations of "zero goals" or whatever for that reason. Sometimes he'd get asked about it from people who interpreted it to mean that he had zero goals in life, but then he clarified to them that he was a goalie in lacrosse, much to his own amusement.
Perhaps AgentDouleO would've avoided that? 😏

I was wondering about this because I saw someone wearing it in the MLB out of all places. I’ve seen it in the other leagues

The NHL specifically only allows integers from 1-99 (in practice 1-98 since 99 is retired league wide). Same with the NFL. Apparently 0 is still permitted in MLB but it’s rare.

0 and 00 are more common in basketball because the traditional way for referees to indicate to the scorer’s table who a foul was on was (and maybe still is) to indicate the number of the player by holding up their fingers. It used to be until pretty recently (I think) that NCAA basketball players could only have the digits 0-5 in their number, since humans only have five fingers per hand barring anomalies.

My recollection of the USA Hockey rules were that all they said was that each player had to wear a distinctive number, but didn’t say anything about any kind of restrictions. I guess wearing a fraction like 1/3 or a huge number like one million is on the table there. They even had an example in the casebook specifying that one player wearing 7 and another player wearing 07 is legal, because it said that despite being mathematically equal, a leading 0 is enough to make it distinctive.

Benito Santiago used to wear the number 09 back in the 90s in MLB.

I want to say the Padres but I recall seeing him play against the Jays before interleague play

Woah didn’t know all that, thanks for the info! It’s funny you said that because I also wondered if in the future players would do the 0 then another digit and guess that’s been way thought of before lol thanks again!

Thats pretty sweet. I thought baseball woulda been the biggest no go lol I saw a Detroit Tiger wearing it the other day but his name slips me

A person whose first or last name begins with a "O"

Defenseman Neil Sheehy wore No. 0 with the Hartford Whalers so that his family name would be properly represented. When the Sheehy's came over to North America from Ireland, at Ellis Island, their name "O'Sheehy" was changed to "Sheehy." By wearing No. 0, he was, again 0'Sheehy.

He wore it with the Padres and the Florida Marlins before switching to #18 at his next stop.

The reason Benito wore 09 instead of 9 (which he originally wore with the Padres) was because he didn't like how the strap from his chest protector intersected and obscured the #9 on his back when he was in the field, so he switched to 09 and the that left the strap running between the two digits.

The NFL has been allowing players to wear 0 since 2023. It's still jarring to me to see that number on the field, haha.

I think the NHL should at least allow goalies to wear the single 0. I've never been a fan of the double zero though.

Oh, I didn't know that, that's interesting. They must have snuck it in when they did the reform of not being so restrictive about requiring you to wear a number based on your primary position while I wasn't paying attention. I think I have most of the old categories memorized, even.
