I still remember us being a Johan Garpenlov crossbar away from being upset by the Sharks in game 6. Before Mike Gartner scored in OT.

I'm old.
Me too mayne. But we ain't old sire. We just grown and bold, or grey. And them young suckas love dat dere let me telly you

If they really insist on divisions, then it could be the top team in each division is #1 and #2 in the conference. The remaining six in each conference are seeded based on standings. Then reseed after each round based on remaining teams in the conference. That would give some incentive to win the division.

Can we just take this moment to hold our heads high as a fanbase and organization and relish the unique opportunity of being playoff underdogs with home ice and the chance to dethrone a 2x Stanley Cup champion? What better way for the Leafs to exorcise playoff demons and put the whole notion that we're a Tampa style winner by actually beating Tampa Bay? Weaseling around for an easier path? Didn't work for us the past two years. Let's just want it more and win.

I'm way out side the box on this one.
I would like to see a playoff system as follows.

It includes the top 16 teams regardless of division

By default it would be 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15 down to 8 vs 9 BUT and a BIG BUT

The first place team has the option to select their opponents. Down to the 7th place team. The 8th place team plays the other remaining team.

If however one or more of the top 8 teams selects a team in the top 8, the list is adjusted.

The Prince of Wales Trophy is awarded to the Eastern Conference winners and the Clarence Campbell Trophy to the Western Conference winners.
Eliminate the Presidents Trophy or give it to number 1.

Do the same in rounds 2 and 3.

Playoffs still retain 2-2-1-1-1

I think it would add a hell of a lot of excitement and maybe even bring in a revenge factor.

Now go ahead and tell me how stupid this is. LOL

Great. So we get to play the Presidents Trophy winner in the 1st round every year as a reward?

If we're 16th overall and they choose us then yes.

You're a pessimist if you think the Leafs will be 16th every year. Or you don't understand what I'm saying.

Win your division
Win your conference
Win the Cup

Sometimes your division is stronger, sometimes it's not.

No one minded the divisional playoff format last season. Well, not at the start at least
I do think 1 to 8 is a better way but your post is 100% correct. Last year’s seeding didn’t help us out at all. Maybe beating the 2 time champs will propel us into a cup this year. As they say, to be the best you’ve got to beat the best.

Regardless of the Leafs situation this time around, it's an incredibly stupid way to handle seeding and completely devalues regular season work.

Having 1st play 8th ect was the right way to do thibgs

Devaluing the regular season is built into the NHL DNA. They regularly toss out the rule book every year for the PO. It's a feature not a bug.

We are going into the first round with home advantage against the back-to-back cup winners. We are 3-3 in our last vs 6 them. The boys CAN'T WAIT. Campbell giggling with Spezza that they are so excited to start the playoffs with this team.

We have WAY more regulation wins than they do -- 44 to 38. We score more per game (3.79 g/g to 3.46). Our PP is 5 percentage points more effective. Our PK is better.

We are deeper than they are. They have 3 guys with 60+ points. We have 6.

We should be favoured to win this round. Not by much. And I say that as someone who attended the first cup final game in Tampa -- where I bought my Kucherov jersey.

Most every path to the cup is through the league's strongest teams. But our 60 goal man is also in the league's top 5 best defensive forwards. As is his linemate Mitch. We replaced Zach Hyman with a guy who is basically got the same motor, but turns out to be an even better fit - probably a better player.

It's our turn.

Yeah its not about whom we play against sire. If we'd play against seattle, I would still made this thread. The old standings were easier and simple to read and it was just a fair game. The best faced the worst scum. And so on. That life was even better. They always rewarded the reg season winners and it was exciting to see of the goljats had a chance to knock out the tysons. That there.... was REAL.

Anybody else read the OP in his old school Senor Martinez manner even though he wrote it normal? But yes I agree it’s a joke the way the format is currently.

Well considering he's referring back to Leaf seasons from the early 90s it means he's a middle-aged man trolling the internet under a juvenile gangsta persona

Really? A man in his mid-40s 50s still seeking anonymous attention on the internet?? Now maybe it's just me but I always thought that a middle-aged 40s or 50s man would have outgrown that by now but hey what do i know haha

I would do a 62 game schedule, every team plays a home-and-away with every other team. Do 1-16 seeding for playoffs.

No OT in regular season, no points for ties, just go by wins.

it's fair and simple and meaningful.

Well hold on, hfman. And excuse me but is that your first or last name? I ask for purposes of address given your disdain for anonymity.

I’ve been reading and hearing repeatedly that a certain trailing generation is largely and shockingly, as humorless as it is intellectually compromised. Your comment demonstrates that it’s not just speculation.

Coach isn’t trolling here. Do you know what trolling means? In fact his first post is still his authentic voice. Moreover, if he’s Gen X, rolling out a “gangsta” persona for esprit de corps is his to do so; An adopted persona to convey good cheer isn’t something you give up just because someone else’s preferred definition isn’t satisfied. It’s shtick. Good fun. And in Coach’s case, singularly encouraging on our Leafs’ boards.

As far as I’m concerned, Coach has a permanent seat at the bar and I for one enjoy his banter and think most do and most importantly take it for what it obviously is.

That you don’t see it’s merit is on you. And as a middle aged man, I think consensus is, online use was ours first to define.

The inability to grasp obvious context and prefer the pretense of integrity to the real thing, is far more juvenile than anything Coach has ever posted. And one more thing…Qualifying your observation with a “what do I know” isn’t a Get Out Of Jail Free card.

Talk about trolling and it’s obvious effects.

Look at this gangsta straight up twerk that thang. Keep keepin' it 💯 sire. This ain't no war like Hagler vs Hearns it's a pure KO like TYSON did erry sucka fool...

Man I loves me some coach haha 😄

The NHL was better with the old standings system. This "wild card" ain't it. Never. The best team should always face the worst one in the dirty first round. Just like they did for decates. Remember them detroit vs san jose games..... for example. San Jose then beat the best team in the nhl clearly. Then we beat them (the sharks) back in 1993-94. Wendel and Doug was plezaying then. That was the REAL NHL. This wild card dirt.... :biglaugh: I'm laughing out loud. And hard. This ain't it. Never been.
I'm not a fan either (the name alone, wildcard), but no need to be so emotional about it.

This probably won’t be a popular take, I do not like the idea of expanding the playoffs any further. I feel it delegitimizes the regular season. I realize I’m old but I don’t think the Cup should be presented in June or July! Of course I still think the World Series should be between the two penant winners of the National and American Leagues! There I said it, bombs away!!!!
