The NHL was better with the old standings system. This "wild card" ain't it. Never. The best team should always face the worst one in the dirty first round. Just like they did for decates. Remember them detroit vs san jose games..... for example. San Jose then beat the best team in the nhl clearly. Then we beat them (the sharks) back in 1993-94. Wendel and Doug was plezaying then. That was the REAL NHL. This wild card dirt.... :biglaugh: I'm laughing out loud. And hard. This ain't it. Never been.

I kind of agree with you on this one. Bettman's "let's increase the number of rivalry matchups in the playoffs!" plan has massively backfired, mostly because he implemented it during one of the worst imbalances of talent in NHL history. I mean, the majority of the Eastern Conference playoff teams would be division winners in the West... And seriously, is there anybody who is a fan of ANY team that likes running into the same set of teams year after year?

Yeah, it's a total joke.

Having one of Tampa Bay or Boston to play in the first round followed by a likely matchup with the President's Trophy winners in the second round as your "reward" for finishing at the very top of the standings is just flat out stupid and inserts an element of luck simply via the division you're in.

Case in point, Edmonton plays in a joke ass division and will have the sad sack Kings to play in round one. What can you do though, this league screws us over with everything and we haven't done ourselves any favors by not taking advantage of our matchups the last two years.

I can respect that the final four might have the better chance of working out as Atlantic vs Metropolitan and Central vs Pacific under the present format. I just find that the 2 vs 3 matchup within each division especially feels too contrived, and an intended rivalry can easily cross over to becoming a redundancy if the same teams are involved often enough.

This playoff format is good for us in the long run. Tampa and Boston are finished soon for sure and will need a rebuild phase. Boston very good job holding on this long but end of day Marchand and Berg age is what it is. Florida and Toronto will finish 1-2 moving on and soon have very easy first round matchups. That 3 place will go to a regressing tampa/boston or probably detroit or montreal/ottawa. Matthews and Marner age guarantees a drop off from 1/2 to 3 most likely as soon as next season.

This is the remaining year the format should be a problem.

Only have to worry if Sabres finish 3rd :sarcasm:

100% agree about 1 playing the worst, etc.

However, I actually really like the NBA's play in system and would like to see us copy it. We have the same amount of playoff teams as we did when the league was 20 teams overall. We need some more intrigue for those middle teams.

Imagine this year if you had

Washington/NYI
Pittsburgh/CLB

Nashville/Vancouver
Dallas/Vegas

all in play-ins....exciting!

I remember saying that at the time the changes were announced and people said I was complaining about nothing, and every team would have to deal with it.

These standings were stupid then and are still stupid now. There's no reason to have the brackets locked in like they are. 1v8 format with a reseed every round was perfect.

I understand and, in a vacuum, agree that the Leafs drawing TB is unfair and the current PO tamplate is unfair. Having said that, I refuse to bemoan our bad luck and "reward" for a 113 point season by drawing TB due to the fact that we couldn't have hoped for an easier 1st round opponent than last year and even a potential road to the cup than last year and we shit the bed. So Karmic justice or some universal blah blah blah - we have to dethrone the Champs. My hope is that our past heartbreaks have taught us something and we are now properly seasoned and we can topple the champs.

When Gilmour was playing for us, the playoffs were based on divisions so not much different from what it is today.

IIRC, the NHL had 1 vs 16 only for a year or two, it was awesome!

It doesn't matter in the East. In the old format we probably still end up getting one of Boston or Tampa next season. Change it and get the same results.

As of typing this, points % has us facing Boston in the old format with Tampa very close lol so this thread is useless.

This team just needs to get it done. If we can't beat tampa in round 1 then we probably wouldn't win 16 games overall anyways.

FWIW

Last year the #1 ranked Leafs played the #8th ranked Canadiens in round #1..

Montreal was actually the #16th ranked playoff team entering the playoffs overall.

To be fair, we knew our first round match up was going to be tough going into the season. But finishing 4th overall and facing the 2× defending champs is a bit much.

Win your division
Win your conference
Win the Cup

Sometimes your division is stronger, sometimes it's not.
Sometimes your conference is stronger, sometimes it's not.

No one minded the divisional playoff format last season. Well, not at the start at least

I still remember us being a Johan Garpenlov crossbar away from being upset by the Sharks in game 6. Before Mike Gartner scored in OT.

I'm old.

You're absolutely right. Get rid of that and the loser point and the OT "winner" point. Stop the point inflation.
