The NHL teams missing on Shesterkin in the 2014 Draft was a massive collective miss

Most of the first round goalies I saw were pretty pedestrian.

However:

Rask, Kolzig, Ward, Vasi, Luongo, Barrasso, Fleury, and Fuhr were also taken in the first round.
Oettinger is pretty good too.

I could see Askarov also being really high end in a few years.

If you expand it to goalies who were starters for a multiple years, you get more hits as well. People just have a very bipolar view of goaltenders more so than other positions, where even if you're a multi-year starter, people may still think a guy "stinks".

I think Hasek was more a geopolitical thing (communism didn't collapse until about six years later).

Point taken that goalies have a long development curve and so they tend to be hard to predict. However, Shesterkin was clearly one of the top goaltenders of his age, as he had already earned KHL callups and crushed it in Russian Juniors. I think in that case it was more just bad scouting collectively from 30 NHL Franchises as opposed to something unexpected occurring.
I mean to be fair another goalie at that same age as Shesterkin put up a .925 in 50 games, so it’s really a crapshoot.

It’s become abundantly clear that the nhl needs to learn how to scout goalies better.
I think it's just a really hard position to predict. You have goalies who dominate in the junior levels (Mrazek) but don't have the mental fortitude to survive in the NHL. Then you have goalies with major athletic skills who can't develop the technical skills needed to last.

Misses and hits are also magnified since there are only 2-3 goalies for every 20-25 skaters. I kind of wish someone would do a statistical analysis on goaltender vs. skater success rate. I bet the percentages aren't as far off as we'd think. No one bats an eye when only one or two players out of a team's draft class becomes NHLers, but when you only draft one goalie every year or two they get a lot more attention.

What also helps non first round goalies is lower expectations, so they can develop at their pace.

I've always had the thought that if your starter is 30, thoroughly review your goalie prospects. If you don't have one you really like, be prepared to draft one in the first 3 rounds in the next 2 drafts, as it will take 4 or 5 years before they make the roster as a backup. By then your starter is 34/35.

I can't believe that after allowing the Rangers to have Henrik Lundqvist with a 7th round pick for all those years later, the NHL would let this guy be available in the 4th Round. What a miss. Looking like potentially the best goaltender of the generation.
and where is your post when the draft pumping his tires? Goalies are hard to judge and are more miss than hit

Making this thread 10 years after the draft is a bit premature don't you think?

Hindsight is 20/20 and goalies are by far the hardest guys to project.

A lot of good talent is found in later rounds. Nikita Kucherov is a good example of this.

Hell even in the NFL, players like Derrick Henry, George Kittle, and Maxx Crosby among others aren't taken until day 2 of the draft.

And the guy who has now won 3 NBA MVPs was drafted 41st overall.

It's right there in the stats you linked. He went 14-5-4 against boys, and 1-5-2 against men. I'd say he was lucky to go in the 4th round.
