The NHL playoffs will be without the Rangers, Bruins and Penguins. This is the first time in NHL history this has happened

Rangers, Penguins and Bruins missing the playoff together almost happened around 2001 and 2002 when the Penguins were having their last good Mario era season while the Bruins and Rangers were in the toilet.

Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Islanders feels like the 2025 playoffs will be missing a lot of traditional US power.
A lot US viewers in those cities who might tune out.

They had their days in the sun and are notable for having spent their future for the present. I think the same happened in Detroit. A team can only do that for so long before they cannot keep up with the fresher teams.

You forgot Buffalo on your list. It’s Probably the strongest and most traditional hockey/NHL market in the US.

But you’re right though, all the east coast US teams missing the playoffs will have a serious and significant impact on American ratings.

By the way, for the first time since 1967, both the Bruins and the Red Wings will not make the playoffs in the same season. The last time the Leafs won the cup was 1967….👀

What a strange coincidence 👀

Rangers and Bruins I get. But putting the Pens into the same category seems a bit of a stretch. THis is the 3rd year in a row the pens have missed the playoffs. Bruins on the other hand? The Pens have have missed the playoffs I think 21 years out of their existence? or something like that
Pens have made the playoffs 28 of the last 35 seasons. They've mostly been a staple since 1990.

They’re all part of the original 12 and half the teams missing the postseason is a recent thing. Pittsburgh and Boston in particular had long playoff streaks until recently. Not really sure what to make of this other than random trivia.

You make of it the same way leaf fans do. …… everything leads back to 1967

Atleast Boston (chokers sadly smh) and Pittsburgh have some hardware and some sustainable excellence seasons that they can reminisce about.

New York barely has shit to celebrate aside from 2014, don't even tell me they stood a realistic chance in both ECF's against Tampa and Florida lol.

The 4 American original 6 teams missing the play off for the first time ever is bigger news

That is pretty surprising that its never happened either. Obviously 4 of them missing out in the original 6 days couldn't happen. But I am trying to think of a time where even just three of them missed out. 2001 and 2003 all of them but Detroit missed it. Any others I am not sure about.

Bruins had 101 points in the 2001/2002 season

Weird... As I remember, during most of "Rangers dark era" Penguins and Bruins werent powerhouses either- its excatly the same era that gave Pittsburgh Crosby and Malkin.
