QUOTE=nashpreds;59485527]I think the problem is that there is no forecheck....ever

The only guys that have really put any pressure on the opposing D lately have been Wilson and Clune. Other than that everybody's just standing around waiting for the other team to break the puck out and bring it back to Rinne.

It would also be nice to see somebody throw a hit once in a while, I think the absence of Tootoo has effected this team more than anybody realizes

Also, they need to stop icing the damn puck, its starting to piss me off.[/QUOTE]

You hit one of the major problems on the head the Forecheck just seems to have disappeared. More and more the forwards have become too defensivly minded. Its hard to create a sustained attack with two forwards laying back to prevent the other team breaking out in an odd man situation. That seems exactly what they are doing far too often. Of course there are situations that require this, maybe the poor ability to pass the puck effectivly in the offensive zone is the real cause.

The offense has really never been effective gaining the blue line and has defered to the dump and chase and now they do not have the speed to do this as effective as in the past. When the team lost to the Sharks in there second playoff appearence it was made clear that the team needed the ability to gind in the corners. Poile signed players to fit that role this with a solid defense created a team that was built for low scoring games. Just enough offense to win close games or pick up points in the regulation tie. This is where the team is now short of being able to score enough on most nights to win outright, Get to OT pick up the single point and try for the second in OT or the shootout. It would be hard to argue otherwise with the results of these first 12 games.

The defense and goaltending combined this year is the best in the league. The offense is the worst in the league stat wise. Wilson and Erat lead the team with 7 points each. And those numbers are really nothing to be excited about but they lead the team.

Now there are a number of people on this board that think SOG means nothing ok SOG means nothing. Lets consider PIN (pucks in net) you can't subjectivley explain that away. Preds have 22 goals or 1.83 per game last in the league these numbers were taken from the stats page of NHL.com goals for. Poile would be hard pressed to find a trading partner to move any of the forwards other than Wilson or Horni. In fact there is not one forward on this team that could play 1st line on any other NHL team right now.

To be satisfied where the team is right now would be great if the offense was competitive. They can't continue to keep pace averaging less than two goals a game. And if you ramove the 6 goal game they had the number look more bleak. Its not my assertion that they need to score 3 each night but they will need 3 each night in half the games to be competitive over the long haul. The season if 1/4 done and the schedule is friendly for the next little while. But the underling measure of offense is going to be there even in games they do win. To make the playoffs its going to take 22 more wins out of the last 36 look at the schedule and see if you can find them.

None of the forwards want to handle the puck because the more you handle the puck the more likely you'll turn it over and turning the puck over on BT's team will land you in the doghouse.

I really think we have the talent to do more than we're doing offensively.

I would be hard not to do more than they are doing offensivley now. It has to get better there is talent in them not the top talent we would like but enough to be competitive with the assets we have on the other side of the puck. Its the top 6 that continue to be absent. There are no legit 1st liners on the team at this point so it has to be by committee and the bottom of the lines have done there part. Heck who would expect Yip to be 4th in points on the team and Spaling has been effective.

Weber leads the team in shots followed by Fish and they have a combined point total of 4 with one goal.

If we had the answers I guess we would be behind the bench. But as fans we have alot invested in this team we have boith been thru the lean times and it is hard to see the team struggle.

There are those who stuill believe the team is one piece away from being a cup contender. Right now I think there a 1st line away. Since the last lockout the team has matched up pretty well with the teams in the west right now they do not match up well with any of them.

In the last 4 games the team had a streach of 10 periods in regulation without a goal. While they got 6 points out of those games. They had 5 total goals in the four games including 3 last night. This is a very positive thing in the standings and seeing them 4th in the west through the 14 games of a half season. We have got to feel the offense will improve and the defense cool off at some point. If Rinne can continue the current level he will bring home some hardware from the awards night.

When the playoff push really starts next month will the team be able to be successful?

Right now 1.86 goals for. Last in the league.
1.64 goals against First in the league

Very confusing year so far.

Same old crap. Look like we are turning things around and then our offense reminds us how devoid of talent they really are. We have needed a finisher for YEARS yet Poile drafts and signs the same crappy 2 way forwards year in and year out. You have to score goals to win games. And we got nothin!

Name the next Predator goal scorer and the month I am thinking Wilson in April. Also at least we lead the league in something (most times shutout). Trade all English as a 1st Language forwards not named Spaling or Wilson

This hasn't looked like a good team al season. We thumped our chest when we spanked St Louis, but they were mired in a losing streak and Halak was injured. We beat SJ in a shootout...at the start of their seven game losing streak.

We are dead last in goals per game, shots per game, and in the bottom third in PP%

We are fourth in the west, but have also played more games than most everyone above us, and are coasting on a pretty soft cushion of OTL/SOL points.

The fact of the matter is the team is what many thought it would be. Poile went into the offseason looking to sign Suter and bring in a forward that was on a level with Rinne/Weber/Suter. None of that happened. Our offseason turned out to be giving a long deal and a lot of money to an offensively bankrupt face off specialist that has had trouble staying healthy the past few seasons with a chronic shoulder injury, resigning a huge, immobile seventh defenseman, and bringing in a solid third pairing defenseman. That's it. The Klein extension was a solid move, the Fisher extension is looking shaky on account of any offense he once had(and there was never much of it) seemingly having evaporated. He's essentially Fiddler playing in the top six and less effective at face offs and shoot outs.

Oh, we also picked up rich Clune.

Pekka, Wilson, Josi and at times Weber are the only things keeping this a mediocre team rather than a total disaster.

But I'm not sure that's better, as all we are doing is ensuring that we will be not good enough to win anything, but not bad enough to crack the top ten in a VERY good draft.

I know all of this magnified by two straight shutouts (another stat we lead the league in, by the way), but there's not been much to be positive about, even in the wins. Not when so many of the were low scoring, one goal games that Pekka gave us by making 1 or 2 goals stand up.

So remember those Vancouver and Detroit teams that shut us out? They're playing against each other and have scored a combined FIVE goals in the first period.

Apparently their offenses are a lot better than ours.

Yep, I just posted something about it in the Detroit game thread. I had to turn the Van/Det game off- couldn't watch all the goal scoring without thinking about last night..

(And there have now been 6 goals scored, early in the 2nd period)

Gang, lets be honest this season is over. It was over from the start. Time to rebuild, and I'm really not that upset about it. The window was open longer than I thought it would have been, but its closed.

Time to move all the vets we can for picks, get our core young players more ice time, an get our next generation some ice time in the big league.

I can't watch these same old inept players continue to waste everyone's time anymore.

Agree with you but if we get rid of all the vets and play the young guys, who's going to be on the ice? Trotz doesn't like to play young players. If you're going for the rebuild, you go all the way.

I wish there were a way to recoup some assets and start shaping a new core. I think simply trading two of Legwand\Erat\Fisher would go a long way, but I don't see Poile having the marbles to do so.

Statistically, we're nowhere close to dead; however, borrowing the most overused phrase of the weekend, we're failing the "eye test" badly. We don't look like a PO contender. All the warts, up and downs, etc. aside, we don't look like a team that cares. No heart.

we win these last 2 - reasonable to expect - and we're tied for 6th instead of fighting to stay in front of Cbus.

fighting for 6th is a stretch.. we have games in hand and will still be a loss or 2 from being 13th or worse. this season is done .. best case we squeak in and get molly-whopped by the ducks or hawks in 4 .. just sell some pieces at the deadline and build through the draft and hopefully we can sign a couple of quality guys in free agency. our future is bright.

I don't think the season is done; but we sure do not look like a PO team either. If they make it, I'm leaning hard towards passing on buying tickets to be honest as I can't see a long run in this group to be honest.

I kinda want to see the forwards go with the Tortorella-mantra of 'Safe is Death' for the next few games. Tired of seeing the defense have to play up so far in the zone only to see them get burned on breakaways. Otherwise, I'm donning my Jim Craig jersey at games the rest of the year until they earn my yellow one back...

you are right. We look like absolute garbage right now. You know who else looked like garbage before riding a hot goalie, great defense and forwards who had issues putting the puck into the net? The Kings last year. They made an aggressive move to get a forward. Will Poile do the same? probably not. Is there a disgruntled forward out there that can be had for a young dman and a first? probably not.

Daunic said that if the Predators go 12-5-2 in their remaining 19, they have about an 86% chance of making the playoffs.

So...win at a clip they've not sniffed since the early season..and hopefully they get in.

I just don't see the benefit to making it at 8 and getting bent over the Blackhawks' knee, then drafting at 14 or 15.

Honestly, the advantage comes from marketing. Missing the playoffs is a huge negative for corporate sales, fans tend to understand more. Corporations want to ride the hot thing, in this town anyway.

I think Cogen and Henry know enough about what they're doing to get the corporate buyers to give them a break for a year. If the lockout didn't kill corp sales, a bad season wont either.

I get the impression through the grapevine that Preds front office is a lot more interested in pleasing corp ticketholders than they are Joe Fan, these days. maybe that's not a bad thing.

Well, we've gone 6-2-4 at home, so if we can can flip 2 of those OTL to W that's 8-2-2, meaning we basically need to win tonight and then split on the road. Given the way everyone from 7th on down is playing right now it may not be as unlikely as it would seem.

Worse will be finishing 9th and drafting around the same spot, and the way this season is going, that's probably how it'll end up. With the DeadThings and CBUS in 7th&8th, just to say goodbye to the old Central in the most appropriate way....
