OT: The Music Thread Part Xi

Do you ever find a band whose radio singles you dislike and you think you hate the band, but when you discover the rest of their catalogue you have to reevaluate your stance?

Somehow the other day through some wikipedia rabbit hole scrolling I came across fun. Remember 2012-2013 when they were the biggest band in the world for a minute? I absolutely hated them. We Are Young, Some Nights, etc. Not just I don't care for it, but I actively hated those singles and the band, writing them off as vapid hipsters. But when I read that Steve McDonald from Red Kross and Roger Manning from Jellyfish worked on their first album from 2009, I decided to give it a listen, and that first album is great. Well-produced indie pop, great hooks, arrangements, complex structures. There are some parts of it I still don't like, but I'd say 70-80% of it is very good.

Then they went major label for their second and final album and decided for some reason to work with Kanye's producer who filled it with programmed drum beats, poor mixing, and autotune. I listened to the whole thing and there are a couple promising tracks on it but most of it is trash to my ears. But it was super popular and made them a million bucks, so I guess it worked for them, but there's no soul at all. Weird how they completely disappeared after that. Jack Antonoff is now producing every major pop song on the radio, so he's done alright for himself, but the other members fell off the map after Nate Reuss made that one song with Pink.

Additionally in reading about them it led me to Nate Ruess's previous band, the Format, who I also like.

That first song has sort of a Dexy's vibe to it.

Mungo Jerry looks like a skinny Andrea the Giant.
Yep. But I was thinking mid-1970s Kareem ....
