OT: The Music Thread Part Xi

Otis owned Monterey

Booker T and the MG's were the backup band

A few months later he was gone

Poor Otis dead and gone
Left me here to sing his song
Pretty little girl with the red dress on
Poor Otis dead and gone

Runnin' away, back to L.A.
Got to find the dock of the bay

Tell us how you really feel, Pete,

Pete Townshend is an extraordinary guitar player, musician, writer, and performer.

Would I want to spend an afternoon with him talking music? Of course I would.

Would I want to live with him for a couple of weeks? Not a chance in hell. I'd do myself in within a week.

He just underscores that it doesn't matter how much talent you have, how much money you have, how much celebrity you have. If you are in general a miserable SOB, you are in general a miserable SOB.

Posting Pickett yesterday, I thought about Otis.

Is Pete Townsend a miserable SOB?

But remember,

Doubtless too "angst-laden."

have a watch of The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan as he interviews various musicians, really enjoying it

I think he kinda is. Not a terribly happy guy from what I read.
I haven't read his memoir, but my understanding is that he had a very unhappy childhood.

Master of the Obvious says, if you ever want to know why someone is the way they are, all you have to do is go back to their childhood. It's all there.

As Churchill, who knew well what he spoke, observed, 'Behind every great man is an unhappy childhood."

Think thats probably very true.

He got involved in that ugly investigation into illegal child pictures — and even though he wasn’t convicted — he ended up on a Predator list for 5 years.

He’s always been blunt and cranky — which sometimes is refreshing. But when he said to Rolling Stone magazine that he was happy that Entwistle and Moon had died and went on to rip their playing and that they were “f***ing hard to play with”, even for PT, that was pretty crass. He apologized to their kids later and said he was being “ironic”. Claimed he loved them as people but was talking about enjoying the freedom to play how he wanted. Maybe that’s so but it doesn’t matter Pete. Think a bit before rambling “ironically” about your longtime, but now dead, bandmates.
