OT: The Music Thread Part Xi

Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods, Known for Immortalizing the Song 'Get Together,' Dies at 83.

I saw him a couple of years ago at the Tupulo Music Hall.

He had some nice songs. Songs when there was still hope....

And yes, this song gets me every time I hear it.

"If you hear the song I sing/You will understand

"(*Listen*)

"You hold the key to love and fear/
All In your trembling little hands,"

It is a beautiful song for better times.

Love is but a song we sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Some may come and some may go
He will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing
You will understand, listen
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
I said, come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right now

I consider myself a realist. And a misanthrope. And a cynic.

Yet what is a cynic but a disappointed idealist?

This is not a song for better times.

This is a song for now.

It is too late. Yes, things are that bad. This is a song for now.

It is never too late.

Before he lost his mind and began running with fools like Abbie Hoffman & Jerry Rubin,
John Lennon engaged in a debate, via the music press, with a militant left wing nut.

Naturally, the left wing nut wanted to burn it all down, so sick was the society he saw around him.

Lennon's logical and practical response: What about the day after that?

It is easy to destroy. What will you build?

It is *easy*, especially in these times, to throw up one's hands and succumb to nihilism.

Think and do as you will.

As for me,

Better to light a candle than curse the dark,

It's a good tune, nothing to write home about.

Whatever else is true, Diamond Dave brought showmanship and silliness back to rock and roll at a time when they were sorely needed.

They still are,

"Have you seen Junior's grades?"

Great band during the Dave era. My own personal favorite album was Fair Warning. They were also a great band live during the Dave era.
