This thread lists the top three hockey moments we all want to forget, but simply cannot. The Olympic hockey podium of horror for your country.

For me, as a Finn they are:

Bronze medal: Lillehammer semis against Canada:
Finland played awesome hockey and lost one period during the whole tournament. Nuff said.

Silver medal: Nagano semis against Russia.
After the fantastic win over Sweden in the elimination, we were so pumped up before the semi-final against Russia. Then came Bure, Bure, Bure, Bure… and Bure. At least we got bronze…

Gold medal: Torino 2006 final game against Sweden.
Finland playing the hockey of their lives. Then, Saku breaking his stick in the 3rd period opening face-off, leading to Sweden’s game-winning goal.
Until the final game, Finland had played almost flawless hockey, including THE perfect game against Russia in the semis. The finals opponent had much easier road to the final game, so I thought they could not match Finland’s tenacity. I was so sure we would win the gold… so the loss was altogether worse to swallow. The shocker.

1. Nagano 1998 vs. Czech Republic - The worst of them all because we played a great tournament and Gretzky wasn't able to complete his trophy case with an Olympic gold medal.
2. Turin 2006 vs. Russia - Canada played a terrible tournament and this was grueling to watch.

Yup. The swedes really had a easy road to the gold in Turin!

Clearly, the most horrific moment in olympic history for Sweden, was our loss against Belarus in the quarter-final.

Sweden had played excellent in the group stage. Beating Canada 5-1 etc. Most people didn't even watch the game against Belarus, since it was obvious that it would be a walk in the park. And well ... the rest is history!

That loss is a classic.

1. 1998 Nagano - very painful to watch the loss to a deserving Czech team after tying it up late. Epic showdown between Roy and Hasek. Gretzky with his head down on the bench. We knew it was his last kick at the can for international hockey.

2. 2002 SLC - round-robin loss to Sweden. We were blown out in that game and it was humbling.

3. 2006 Torino - I never really got into this team so I wasn't all that disappointed for some reason. They were so flat they didn't really deserve to win so it wasn't all that disappointing. That game against Russia was a well-deserved win by Ovie and Co.

HM: Losing to the US in 2010 Vancouver Olympics round-robin. It wasn't quite as disappointing because they'd lost in 2002 and still won the Gold - so I wasn't as concerned as I was back then.

I can't really remember the Olympic hockey before the NHLers went.

I can remember Forsberg scoring a big goal and Nedved suiting up for Canada, and that's about it. Was Sean Burke in net at one point? It was always such a hodge podge of guys.

2002 not getting Herbie his second Gold.

2010 losing it in OT like we did.

Tie. Both in 1998: Gretzky denied Olympic gold. And the girls losing first ever women's Gold.

I was seriously bummed for 4 years. After losing the Jets, Best vs Best tournaments were the only chance I had to cheer for a team with full passion. With Jets back now, it's a little less pressing to absolutely have to win every Gold / World Cup. But it's still very sweeeeet to do so. :yo:

Just glad we've made up for both of these '98 disasters every year since, except the men in '06 of course. That **** show doesn't deserve remembrance of any kind.

Probably 2006 but the nostalgia of the olympics for Canada was messed even before the tourney began. Gretzky iced a really bad team that was chalk full of the "old boys club", a lot of veteran plugs on that team out of respect.

I'm not a huge fan of the team Yzerman sent out this year either but the Gretzky team got a lot more flack.

2010 easily.

To lose a heartbreaker like that in overtime, coming so soon after Parise's thrilling GTG right at the end of regulation.

And I already hated Crosby. As if I needed any reason to hate him more. He already put a damper on Buffalo's Winter Classic by scoring on Ryan Miller in overtime, and here he comes in Olympic gold medal game to score on Ryan Miller in overtime. Almost the exact same play too.

The fact that it was Crosby scoring on Miller just made the whole thing about 10X more obnoxious and unbearable, and it was already pretty bad.

Constructing a comprehensive list of most bitter defeats is very Finnish way to prep for tomorrows game :sarcasm:

As a Russian fan, my personal worst moment:

1-2 loss in the 2007 world championship in moscow during the semi finals vs. Finland. Russia had not won anything since the world champs in 1993. Finally Russia had a tournament on home ice since their worst tournament ever in St.Petersburg in 2001.
New Arena, huge support from the crowd and finally Bykov was the first coach who players actually wanted to play for and come from their vacations after NHL and represent their country. Kovy scoring that 1-0 in the first game against Denmark made the Arena explode totally.
Russia played its best hockey in 15 years and there was no chance on earth Russia wouldnt take the gold medal, but I don´t know what the **** Yeromenko (goalie) did in the overtime against the finns. The russian team showed more heart than ever and 100 times more than in these olympics (you can see that from the reactions in the video below).
I remember me being on the phone with my mother and when I saw that puck go in I screamed "Nooooo" and the phone flied across the whole room, I was on the edge of crying, that hurt.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me, it's this...

2/24/02 - the day America's golden generation was denied their hockey gold, 2010 was tough, but expected. If we lose tomoorow especially in dramatic fashion that could come close to 02

Bronze:
'92 - First Olympics that I watched (this was the year I started getting into hockey; I was 8 years old), and I just remember being so disappointed during the final that I left the room in the 3rd. In hindsight, the CIS had a great team and deserved the win, but my young self just wanted that gold medal.

Silver:
'94 - Had high hopes of making up for '92, only to watch Tommy Salo with a ridiculous save on Paul Kariya in the shootout. Heartbreaking.

Gold:
'98 - Loss to the Czechs, after finally getting the NHLers in there (again, hopefully to make up for the '92 and '94 losses), avenging the '96 World Cup loss to the US, and going undefeated all the way to the semis. I was shell-shocked.

P.S: I didn't watch the 2006 tournament since I was overseas and didn't have access to a channel with hockey; harder to be disappointed when you're not watching the games.

Losing in 2010 was really painful.

That said I own Miracle and that always makes me feel better. Brings tears every time. Wish I had some level of success from the Blues to reflect on like that.

Losing to the Czech republic in 1998 (for Canada). No question. First meaningful Olympic hockey tournament for Canada, and coming off a bad loss in the 1996 World Cup. People often forget this due to the "Canada can't play on the big ice" narrative but Canada looked good before this game. Anyway, the Czechs played great and Canada lost in a shootout. Made much worse because of the insane shootout selections.

The loss to Russia in 2006 isn't in the same ballpark as the above. Canada looked putrid earlier in the tournament, so the loss was actually pretty much expected. In 1998 most people couldn't believe that team Canada, lead by Gretzky, Roy, Bourque, Lindros etc., would lose in our first real Olympic hockey tournament.
