Post-Game Talk: The Mayor of Tampa does it again - Leafs win 4-3

Has there ever been any confirmation that he did so and what pieces were involved, or is it all speculation?
Dubas said he was not going to do it. He just updated Shannan in conversation that they had this offer, and said obviously we would never do this. Friedman said that Knies was a non-starter for the Leafs. That said Hagel is a good player.

BTW, not gonna complain about the refs, Tampa hit I think 5 posts. The hockey gods gave us a pass either way. Take the points and be positive. Now let's finish this.
Those were some wild post shots too, Stolie was getting killed out there.

Did I catch Stolie ducking the one time clapper Hedman took from the top of the circle that hit the crossbar? Thats probably what I would do too.

We got through it though and Stolie didn’t get rattled. He seems to be pretty strong mentally - bodes well.

Myers very obviously the odd man out given these TOI numbers. Every other D-man at 20+ minutes. Myers didn't even reach 8.

Benoit has been better lately since McCabe went down.

I thought we played well. Tampa had its moments as well, but I felt like a lot of that was owed to line mismatches: Cooper using last change plus double-shifting Kucherov (he played 25 minutes tonight) to get him out against our bottom six. Not something to be dismissed but also not a recipe for success over a seven game playoff series. As well, despite the zone time, our bottom six did a good job collapsing in front of the net, blocking shots, and minimizing the damage.

All that said, I'd go back to the prior lines: Jarnkrok-Domi-Laughton / Lorentz-Holmberg-Robertson. I understand the desire to put Robertson into a more offensive role given our need for depth scoring, but that ship sailed IMO when Treliving failed to get a 3C at the deadline. Our best next hope is that the bottom six can be net neutral and Domi-Robertson together ain't that. Just too loose defensively.

Biggest concern tonight was the PK. Officiating was atrocious, yes, and the zebras gave a point to Tampa that they didn't deserve but that's been the case for years now. It's going to continue in the playoffs, just like it did when the refs missed that blatant DeBrusk knee-on-knee against Kadri, or called back Tavares' goal by calling Holl for a pick, or when Bennett chokeslammed Knies with nothing called. There is one rulebook for the Leafs and another for teams like Tampa, Boston, and Florida. Get used to it and find a way to kill the penalties. 50% on the PK is not good enough and has/will cost us a series.

Good news: We came out flying and seized control of the game. The top line showed up. Stolarz made some big saves. Knies continues to own the state of Florida. And, if my math is correct, we are one win/one Florida loss from clinching home ice and 3-1 will get us the division even if Tampa wins out.
Great post.

Guess Knies is an Alpha.

Said the team needed to be better after a no show loss and then scored a hatty along with the OT winner the next night against a team that chasing them in the standings.
Yup and Matthews and Marner as well 3 apples for Mathews and the opening goal for Marner as well as two helpers.

I feel like I’m mentally deficient or something because in spite of the evidence I just can’t bring myself to believe Knies will ever be a true top tier player. For whatever reason, in my bones I don’t think he’ll ever put up a point per game season.

I don’t know why, and I will be very happy if/when proven wrong.

Feels good to get this one. Atta boy Knies. Growing into an elite power forward right before our eyes. And one day after calling out the performance against FLA as soft. That’s exactly the type of leadership we need, good on him. Great job by the top line in general. Need others to pick it up.

I disagree. Knies has legit offensive skills and he's showing it this season. He's scoring around the net like Tavares does, he has a good shot, is creative, can skate and has puck handing skills. No reason why he can't be a very good offensive player and at least get close to being a 30 goal, PPG player. He's still only 22 so no reason to believe he can't continue to improve offensively as he gains more experience.

Who knows maybe he never becomes a consistent PPG or better player and turns out to be a 20-30 goal, 60-70 pt player at his best. That's still pretty damn good considering all the other things he brings with his game. A big guy who can hit, is always battling in the corners and fighting for the puck, can penalty kill and is almost always playing hard. The kind of player that any team has a need for and the Leafs were finally able to draft one that is now doing well for them.

The only thing that kinda sucks is that while its great to see Knies improve alot with his offense this year, the downside is that its happening in his contract year. The Leafs could've maybe signed him to a reasonable contract for the next few years and now we're probably going to have to pay a fair bit more to lock him up for hopefully a longer term contract.

If he scores 30 goals and gets 60-70 points a season playing as a genuine power forward on our top line he already is a top tier player

That's a player every team in the league would drool over, he's unbelievably valuable to the team

So Matthew Knies is that guy. Just imagining the meltdown this place was having if those were our guys in OT getting schooled like that, that was Kucherov, Point, Hedman on the ice for Tampa at the end.

3 point cushion, just keep winning and grab home ice for the first two rounds.

But holy shit Knies was a beast around the net, this man needs to be extended as of like yesterday

Important 2 points. Knies is a beast. Lots of blocks Just keep moving on. Hopefully we can cruise the last few games.
No business winning that game, but thank god they did
Is it me, or when the Leafs collapse in their zone and allow the outside shots, it reminds me a lot of Randy Carlyle hockey. Maybe the difference being the goalie and a better defense. It kind of worries me.

Matthews deserves some props for that play on Knies gamewinner.

He makes a subtle stickhandle taking the puck from his forehand to his backhand and pulled it right under Point's stick.

It made Vasilevsky start to shift his weight to his right and thus by the time the puck reached Knies, he was totally out of position to have any chance at a save.

It couldn't be, less than 24 hours ago all I was being told was we can't win big games against playoff proven teams. The score must be a typo.
