Value of: The Matt Duchene Market

One of the biggest playoff choke artists in modern times, he not only dissapears but he becomes a liability due to his lack of effort and care

12 points in 37 games, the last two years in deep playoff runs and it's not like he's relied on to do much besides contributing offensively

He'd be a great fit for a team needing a center to help develop its offensive minded young wingers and one not planning to be a playoff team
Careful, I think Austin Matthews has that trademarked.

I highly highly doubt Duchene has much desire to go back to Colorado, but the Avs ironically might be one of the better landing spots for him.

They badly need a 2C, are in win now mode, and can pay up in the shorter term. If Nelson walks on them Duchene would be a good backup option.

Super fun player during the regular season. He could probably get himself a nice payday from a non-playoff team

If he wants to join a contender or stay with Dallas he will need to come dirt cheap again.

I love him as a player but 2 straight underwhelming playoffs just can't happen. Especially when he led us in scoring during the regular season

If he holds out for a while, and the Canucks can’t find a centre, I can see them coming in late on a two year deal
I don't see that as remotely realistic. If he's "waiting" and ends up taking a short-term, mid-AAV deal, then he's ending up going back to Dallas, or another sunbelt contender.

The only reason he's leaving Dallas to go to a mediocre team in the midst of organizational dysfunction is because they're offering him a lot of money. Duchene to VAN is going to cost like $7M x 4-5 years.

Duchene won't leave Dallas, they just won't sign him.

They won't make cap space to keep an old guy that have been a liability comes the playoffs.

They're in win now mode, not in the regular season, for the cup ..

I think he ends up going to a team thats not nearly as good as they think they are. I also doubt he goes to Canada so that rules out a good chunk of teams who fit the prior description.

If I had to guess, I'd say LA or Carolina

Why not Canada, he’s an Ontario boy?

That's the narrative but try to tell anyone that Duchene was better in the playoffs because he wasn't the last 2 years or even in his career for that matter.

I hope that my Canucks have zero interest in him but at least he wouldn't cost any trade assets I guess.

If he's not on the 35+ rule, I'd table up to a 5 year deal from Montreal. An effort to put the finger on something other clubs won't dish out.

I think he likes playing in the south and would prefer to stay in a non-traditional market. With the Nashville money, he can also choose less to go where he wants to be. I don't know if it will be Dallas again though.

Would love him on Utah for a few years if the contract worked and we didn't sign another center. Duchene would be a considerable upgrade over Barrett Hayton at 2C.

It's kinda funny. The last two years were by far the best teams he'd been on and he did well in the regular season. Come the playoffs though? I didn't watch him much. Was he deployed differently? With Johnston, Sequin, and Hintz, was he relegated to a more supporting role?

And doesn't Dallas just turn this whole 'tank to rebuild' on its head? They drafted Robertson at 39, Johnston at 21, Hintz at 49, Harley at 18, and Benn at 129. If you're a large market team like Toronto, NY, Mtl, etc. the way that you can really flex your might is investing in your scouting team. I don't know who leads Dallas, but that's someone I'd look to poach if I were running a team.
