The Martin St Louis Thread

Coaching is one issue; they could use a guru to come in help Marty put some structure in their play. The youth of the d is another problem. It is no surprise they are making lots of mistakes; it is a long apprenticeship to become a good NHL dman in my opinion. They all have some upside but if they begin to regress it's a slippery descending slope (hopefully Xhekaj is not on that track already).

The Habs had 29 goals for going into the game tonight, the same as Dallas (in one fewer game). So, they are scoring enough to be competitive, But the Stars had 17 goals against compared to the Habs 41. Six more tonight and 47 is two more then the worst team in the league San Jose in 11 games.
You build your coaching staff around the HC, not vise versa. If Marty can’t turn it around quick, he needs to go.

I've been defending MSL but caufield is scoring from 30 feet out again why do we need MSL now? All he's done is show Caufield that one shot in practice last year

Is he the only problem? The roster seems to have a number of holes which wouldn't change with another head coach. They need to be showing progress as a group, but management sure seems reluctant to give them much help on or off the ice.

Clean house and get some experience behind the bench. We don’t need players and coaches both learning at the same time. It’s a joke

Hes getting fired with a better team than the Habs, why do we want him
Better system, accountability, experience. I don’t think it means anything when it comes to where each team is in the standings. Maybe he’s just not a good fit. Maybe MSL would do better with an older team but who knows

I'm not entirely on MSL out because despite the lack of structure - The players are making way too many mistakes, we don't have enough vets out there.

What the Puck: It's time for St. Louis to admit there's a problem

Wait, are you saying Zadorov and Lindholm are bad players?
Bruins were supposed to have the strongest D-Corp in the East. Maybe Swayman is part of the problem now. he’s got his huge contract and no Ullmark to save his butt.

Montgomery speaks French. he is born and raised West island in MTL. I heard some interviews with him.
Not to sound incensitive because I don’t know a lot about him as a coach, but wasn’t there a drinking and personality problem with him in the past? Has he beat that?

Pascal Vincent is already ten times better coach than MSL.

It was said that Laval will use MTL system of play. Hell, Laval looks that much better in all three zone. Defensive play, transition and forecheck. Vincent is doing that with a inferior roster. I would bet my pay that MSL coaching in Laval, they wouldn’t even look near what they look right now. And Vincent in MTL, we would look a lot less messy and terrible. Maybe we wouldnt have more victories but we would look way better structure wise.
"Vincent is doing that with an inferior roster" than the Habs... but the Rockets are also playing against other AHL teams with rosters that are also far inferior than their NHL counterparts as well as some being inferior to the Rockets. To put that across in different words, a PeeWee level coach with a good roster may win all his games, but the same coach may not win any games at bantam with a roster that is inferior to other bantam teams. It's hard to tell how Vincent will be at the NHL level with this team.

No doubt the coaching of the Habs can be part of the problem, but it's not just the coaching. It's also the quality of the players on the Habs in comparison to the players on other NHL teams that affect the results. There is no coach in the world that can turn the existing Habs roster into the Florida Panthers. It's just isn't there. The Habs aren't rebuilt enough yet. Can't "make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

What the Habs do need is a "training" coach, and isn't that what MSL was supposed to be? A good training coach is needed (and not coaches like Tortorello for instance) so the younger players can develop more while the team is rebuilding. All that management has to do is find one that is better than MSL and is available AND wants to be here AND who speaks French. Is that Vincent?

Of course. And that is why Bruins hired him. A very good coach. I think. This season doesn’t look good on him though.

There is zero pressure on MSL …. from the actual decision makers
You think ? I am sure HuGo are very worried. And Molson too.
