Speculation: The market for Mitch Marner's mega millions

What jersey will Mitchell Marner be wearing in the 2025-26 season?

He's not going to sign with a basement team and if he joins any of those teams he's instantly expected to be the guy, and the pressure would be to drag them to a playoff spot.

If he's looking for a situation where he doesn't need to be the guy then he's going to sign with a team that's already a contender or at least a playoff team. I imagine he's going to want to join a team where he had the chance to play with an elite player, so Vegas with Eichel, or Colorado with MacKinnon, or a dark horse like Minnesota with Kaprizov.

He isn't taking a discount to join a contending team. Which of them is paying Marner 13? Not the Avs who lets Rantanen walk over 12M. Vegas has no cap for it. Minnesota I could see being a dark horse

Is he the kind of person who would relish the opportunity to get paid and also be the face of the franchise and also the best player who has ever played for that franchise? If yes, Seattle can certainly offer that in addition to no state income tax and a pretty nice area to live in.

We are far from the ideal place if he wants to win now but the framework is in place for this team to be a contender in a couple of years. Beniers, Wright, Catton, Kakko, Nyman as the core. Potentially Firkus, OFM, Sale and our 1st round pick this season.

I think he takes a little less to stay in Toronto with his buds (he probably more than makes up for the $ with local endorsements) , but I also voted for VAN (need to replace Miller and try to prove to Quinn that they are serious about winning) and PIT - need next generation of talent. Dubas connection and opportunity to play with Sid could convince him to sign.

That said, Kevyn Adams should back up the Brinks truck and overpay him.
Marner won't take a hometown discount.

He won't have to. If Marner wants to come play for any of those teams then they'll move out the players necessary to make room.

Highly doubtful but if Marner takes 11M to stay in Toronto. Knies gets bridged 5M x 1. Tavares takes 4M and Toronto signs Bennett at 8M. Trade Jarkrok and Kampf.

That would a good playoffs team

All those teams already have big money committed. He will end up in the same situation there of too many big names not enough depth.

Before game 7 I said that if he wanted to troll the Leafs and stick it to them he would sign in Boston. They will be offering and have cap space with a GM who has to produce in the next 3 years.

Now, after the debacle in game 7 and the fans' goodbye to him, would he be at all interested in joining Boston for the next 7 years?

That's suddenly a lot of depth and money on the RW to drive the play for Boston.

I just don't see him doing that to the Leafs Fanbase so I'm going to guess somewhere in the Western Conference.

This is not true at all.
Washington, Winnipeg, Minnesota, St. Louis, Carolina, Montreal, all Playoff Teams this year, have the cap space to sign him to 13+ right now.
The next 5 teams in points that missed the playoffs, Detroit, Columbus,, Calgary, Vancouver, and Utah can sign him with no issues.

Some of you are absolutely blinded by hate for this guy.
I wouldnt be surprised at all if Marner takes less then 13 to join a contending team in the USA. That move alone save him some cash with the tax rate.

I hope his body for London, Robert Thomas is on the phone with him right now.

Why would Marner do that? He can just walk to free agency and cash his ticket.

He negotiate the deal with the team of his choice, the Leafs then sign him to that contract and immediately trade him.

It allows him to have the 8th year otherwise he can only get 7. He still picks the team, the Leafs just get some comp for helping them get the 8th year.

We are not blinded by hate. You think the Leafs held onto all these guys forever cause they suck? No Marner will go to some team and be a superstar as he has been in Toronto all these years. The problem is the mix of players doesn't work, and Mitch is not capable of playing big boy hockey when it counts at least in Toronto.

Marner may take less than 13 if the tax math works out, I think it is unlikely. Him and his agent have never shown a willingness to do that. He is not going to Winnipeg I can tell you that.

I still maintain he is going to leave to join a rebuilding team or a team where playoffs is a huge success. Perfect market for him. He can put up 100 points and be a defensive and PK monster in his sleep for every game aside from games 5, 6, and 7 in the playoffs

Toronto (Marner) and Vegas (Eichel) are the only two playoff teams, where a defensemen didnt lead the team in time on ice per game.
Not surprising at all considering the pieces on the Blue line in Toronto.
Marner is going to join a Team that has the pieces in place to win a cup, he sure as hell is not going to join a rebuilding team or some team that celebrates making the playoffs as some sort of accomplishment.

Marner knows he is leaving a situation where they have a piss poor defense, a captain that has scored 4 goals in his last 18 playoffs games, and little if any secondary scoring.

Steve Yzerman is desperate, I think he goes hard after Marner and than trades for Rasmus Andersson from the Flames.

That team has a very good chance to make the playoffs.

Keep in mind, $9M in TBL is equivalent to $12.15M in TOR. His AAV in a no-tax state is going to be 20%~ less than whatever it would be in a high-tax region. $15Mx7 in SJS is only a couple million more take home dollars than $9Mx8 in TBL, and I seriously doubt he would get a $15Mx7 deal (a $13.9Mx7 year deal would be the same take home, but in 1 fewer years).

A $10Mx8 deal from TBL would be basically unbeatable by any high-tax region.
No you’ve done the taxes wrong, you’ve done it like the team plays all 82 games in Florida.

Wings need elite scoring talent, its pretty close to home and they have the cap space. Can see this being a fit beside Larkin and debrincat, age fits their timeline too

Carolina obviously covets him, but I'm not sure they're willing to completely upend their "internal salary structure" to give him the $13-14m he probably wants.

We bought Kotkaniemi for $6m, overpaying him for 1 year to get him into the fold. We bought a 1st round pick from Toronto for $6m in cash. We offered Rantanen a contract worth more AAV than he got from Dallas.

Don't underestimate our ability and willingness to be creative in spending money to bring what we want into the fold for on-ice talent.

How much are the Wings realistically willing to offer? 14M? 13M? He will get offers over 13M for sure. Leafs offered 13.5 x 8

there's 0 chance. marner all ego and wants a higher aav than matthews, he would rather retire than take less money than nylander.
