Speculation: The market for Mitch Marner's mega millions

What jersey will Mitchell Marner be wearing in the 2025-26 season?

Looking at Utah's roster, I honestly can't see better of a fit for Marner than Utah. They have the money to sign Marner now and no major RFAs needing to be re-signed outside of Cooley and Hayton in the next 2 years. They can run with Keller and Marner on 2 different lines to distribute out the talent a bit more and have a lethal top-6, and that plus their their defense and goaltending firmly put them as a playoff team now and going forward IMO.

I think they'd probably want to move Maccelli to have some money to spend on the rest of the roster (namely improving the 3rd line a bit), but they'd be in a really damn good spot with adding Marner. Maybe they'd have something like:

Keller-Cooley-Guenther
Schmaltz-Hayton-Marner
Kerfoot-McBain-XXXXX
Crouse-Stenlund-Doan

Sergachev-Marino
Maatta-Durzi
Cole-Kesselring

Vejmelka-Ingram

If you think Maccelli can rebound and be an offensive driver for that L3, I don't even think you need to add another forward.

I have said for a while now that all the way around I think they are the best fit. Young team with a core ready to take the next step, a new owner/city that is seemingly eager to spend and then for Marner...it is pretty much the exact opposite from Toronto. Gets him clear out of town. Only have to come back once a year.

Marner wants north of 13 and you think they are gonna put him on the second line?

lol.

Carolina obviously covets him, but I'm not sure they're willing to completely upend their "internal salary structure" to give him the $13-14m he probably wants.

Chicago could in theory go close to $15m x 7... thinking its better to overpay Marner by $2m than to overpay Foligno or Hall by that much... by the time it's a problem, cap will be up big.

That being said, I think i'd lean towards the LA Kings. He doesn't have to deal with the BS of going to a rebuilding team. He gets to hang out with Bieber, but walk the streets with anoninmity. Gets to join a team where he can just go and do his thing, wont be looked upon for leadership.

San Jose Sharks also a possibility with Jumbo & Marleau recruitment, but they are obviously further off than LA, and would come with some leadership pressure.

Nylander is making $11.5 million and he was regularly playing with Tavares (who was making $11 million) on Toronto's 2nd line.

Dumb argument.
Nylander was on the second line because they had Marner (11) and Matthews (14) on the first line.

Who the hell does Utah have making more than 13?

Good to know! Looks like Jarvis gets some decent signing bonus money as well.

In your opinion would the Canes do a Tavares-style contract (all bonuses except for minimum base salary) if that's what it took to bring him to Carolina?

Lots of good ideas here for fits.

Hawks
Ducks
Utah
Sharks

Would all be amazing fits. Not expected to come in and lead a team to a cup and all can afford to pay him top dollar which is what matters most to him. Eventually, they would become contenders and he is able to kind of be part of the team but not expected to be the guy.

Similar to Panarin signing with the Rangers as they rebuilt

He ends up where no one will really notice he gets paid that much and there will be no serious expectations. The beach mansion in Malibu is likely a career goal. Too bad. He has the talent of a franchise player, imo. .

Dundon also okayed meaningful bonuses to those in the middle of the roster and lower (Martinook, Chatfield, Gostisbehere, Walker, Carrier).

I don't see why not. The narrative that he's cheap, as it pertains to personnel on-ice, is baseless. If you ask the truthers for evidence, pretty much all they have is a contract dispute with a PBP announcer 5 years ago.

Utah, Columbus, Anaheim would be my 3 guesses. Columbus has Johnny Hockey cap space to replace.
Can't see him going to last-place squads in San Jose or Chicago, even if they should be turning the corner on the rebuild soon.

I think Chicago will be at the front of the line.

The perfect player to feed Bedard, elite playmaker with elite vision, kills penalties, a little on the small side so keep Foligno around, but he unquestionably & instantly makes the Hawks a lot better.

And I do think it's realistic he would sign there if they can sell him on being a contender within a few years, or - and this is quite possible - Mitch is that guy that doesn't put a lot of weight on probability of winning a Cup, he just wants to get paid to play where he wants?

He's not going to sign with a basement team and if he joins any of those teams he's instantly expected to be the guy, and the pressure would be to drag them to a playoff spot.

If he's looking for a situation where he doesn't need to be the guy then he's going to sign with a team that's already a contender or at least a playoff team. I imagine he's going to want to join a team where he had the chance to play with an elite player, so Vegas with Eichel, or Colorado with MacKinnon, or a dark horse like Minnesota with Kaprizov.
