Getting shutout by Stuart Skinner twice showed their lack of high-end talent (I mean for god's sake Eichel was centering Howden and Olofsson in game 5), and Stone and Hertl aren't getting any younger.

They are one of the few teams big enough to add a guy like Marner without their overall toughness becoming an issue.

Would probably have to deal Wild Bill's 5.9M and Hague/Whitecloud to open up enough cap space to make it happen.

Even Tavares not that much. Flames need guys under 27 years old, especially at center. Trying to rush the rebuild with a bandaid fix just to squeak into the playoffs every other year would be moronic, but also completely on par with our ownership. Calgary missing out on any and every opportunity to add elite scoring would be moronic. This year already proved they are already past their window to finish bottom 5 and likely bottom 10, and they already have way too much high end young talent contributing/about to contribute to get to that point in names like Wolf, Coronato, and Parekh. Banking on our huge quantity of top 3 round picks over this 4 year stretch producing a Marner likely isn’t gonna happen, Calgary needs to utilize deft trades and free agency to add these names at every opportunity possible to fix their scoring.

Calgary has the most usable cap space and according to Seravali (so massive grain of salt) is aiming to go big fish hunting. Adding Marner is a good start at adding some offensive punch to the forward core:

So Calgary should stay status quo, and hope that the late 1st and expendable prospect an Andersson trade would get us turns into a superstar, instead of just adding a superstar?

Calgary just finished 15th in the league, this mediocre finish you’re terrified of just happened. They did it with a a young core of Wolf, Coronato, Zary, Farabee, Bahl, Frost, Pospisil all playing meaningful minutes, with guys like Parekh, Gridin, Stromgren, Brzustewicz and Honzek knocking on the door. Calgary isn’t getting worse without gutting the team (and that includes the under 27 group you referenced), and you’re living in fantasy land if you think that will happen. That mediocrity you’re terrified of comes from hoping Frost or our 18th overall pick will become a superstar, instead of just adding some like Marner.

Genuinely clueless where the topic of signing a 35+ year old to a 8M+ contract came from. Marner is a freshly 28 year old winger, the topic of this thread. What tangent are you trying to start?

Back on topic, Calgary have close to if not the most cap space to burn amongst teams that’d be motivated to add Marner. If he signs elsewhere, it wouldn’t be because Calgary got outbid.

He should go to Washington. A good team with lots of good players to play with but also one where he'll be the clear top dog talent and salary wise but not in the public eye because of Ovi. It's a very nice place to live and pretty similar to Toronto, media is extremely forgiving, chance to win right away and in the future with a good prospect pool. Also the Carbery connection

Because they’ve had him for 9 years and unless they win this year, it’s been clear their mix of stars isn’t working. They’ve already tried to trade him. You can’t have all your best players be timid come playoffs and he’s the obvious one to move on from given his contract status. Leaf reporters on the beat like Mirtle have already said both sides are tired of each other and just want to move on. Letting Marner walk and a Tavares paycut will allow them to really change their salary structure and go in a more balanced direction, it makes sense to see what that looks like after so many years of being the most top heavy team with little success.

He would honestly still probably lead the forward core in ice time most nights, but he can also carry a line. Zary looked a lot better than his point totals suggested last year before he got hurt, and Farabee has plenty of untapped scoring potential. Placing him there could give Calgary 2 dangerous scoring lines, something they sorely lacked last year.

Loading your top line happens less and less in today’s NHL, and I doubt him and Huberdeau work week together anyways. Let Huberdeau and Kadri continue developing chemistry that was thriving during the final stretch, and give Marner two gifted young players who walked into the league scoring at roughly 20 goal paces to thrive with. If it doesn’t work, lines can be juggled afterwards.

My prediction is that Marner either stays in Toronto or goes to Carolina, and it highly depends on whether Toronto wins tomorrow or not. I know that Toronto fans always have outsized expectations, but seriously, an ECF appearance is a real sign of progress for the Leafs in the Core Four era, even if they lose it. Carolina, out of all of the various NHL situations, has the most appeal in the league right now, because they perennially make deep playoff runs AND have nearly $30M in cap space with only 2-3 openings. Chicago, Calgary, and Anaheim don't come close to the same type of appeal, and I think that even fans of those teams can acknowledge that reality.
