Man our PP would be pretty sick if we could use Auston Matthews as a shooting option

Him looking for passes on the perimeter is just depressing. I'm of half the mind to go back to the same exact system we used at the start of the year and just stick Spezza in Matthews spot. Or shit, call up Nick Robertson and use him as a specialist, why not

Let's keep doing the exact same thing, with the exact same players, that hasn't been working on the PP for the past ten games now!

Here's an idea, why not switch it up a little? Take off Thornton and replace him with Mikheyev or something? Or maybe try a Matthews-Nylander-Brodie and then a JT-Marner-Rielly config?

Or...just hope you can keep trying to fail upwards?

Man, we need to do something about that PP. Terrible zone entries, and not dangerous even when we get setup. WTF happened?

I’d like to see us just load up the top unit and give them close to 2 mins. JT in front of the net, Matthews/Marner/Nylander with lots of movement, and maybe try Muzzin or Brodie at the point on PP1 over Rielly. I’d try something like:

PP1 (1.5 mins):
JT
Nylander/Matthews/Marner
Muzzin

PP2 (0.5 mins):
Simmonds
Kerfoot/Spezza/Hyman
Rielly

Also, instead of just having Rielly fake the rush every time on PP1 only to drop it back, have one of Marner/Nylander/Matthews start the rush, and sometimes push the pace without the drop back. Our zone entries are way too predictable.

Nothing fancy about him. And I'm saying that in a good way. Just makes the right plays, very fundamental

He is one of the most composed players I’ve ever watched. Rarely panics and always makes the logical play. Doesn’t get fancy with it. I hate that Dubas didn’t acquire him last year because we could have used him again CBJ

Can you get anywhere in the playoffs with a PP like that?
The majority of the game is played at 5v5 and the Leafs PP despite this slump is still #6 in the league, so probably? This PP shooting at a sub 7% clip won't last forever. Much like how the .857 SV% goaltending didn't.

Can’t tell if it’s because our forwards are so good you want to see a high end superstar like Cale Makar to do them justice or if Rielly is more of a rush defenseman who isn’t suited to some of the standard PP QB duties. He just stands still and doesn’t do anything.

PP points per 60min, last 5yrs (min 500min):

1. Hedman 7.08
2. Krug 6.18
3. Rielly 6.05
4. Carlson 5.93
5. Burns 5.36

For all of you that are hammering out the criticisms during the game, you really are missing some good entertainment. Heck of a game: fast paced, good scoring chances, some nice hits, solid goaltending, I'm enjoying this.

And please, Keefe and crew, would you stop with the drop pass bs on the PP :thumbd:

yes except make Muzzin the point man because he has a point shot. Or out Justin Holl there

Reilly is fine on the PP if he doesn't shoot. But for some reason someone (either him or one of the coaches) has convinced him that he needs to be the PP shooter...

True, but I still don't like some of the PP deployments out there. In the playoffs, I'd rather they just load up 1 unit and play them 1:30 of the PP. Sometimes you need a big goal on the PP in the playoffs to win a game. A bad PP can still sink you, IMO.
