The Legacy of Steve Yzerman

That was a good listen. Lalonde seems like a nice guy and a very well respected player coach, it just didn't work here. The team was not ready to self motivate and push themselves and maybe he didn't have the ability to be tough and push the right buttons... who knows.

Sounds like Yzerman is very competitive and has been somewhat demanding, even in the lean years. He wants to win and feels the pressure. Not really news but nice to hear he has a high standard he wants for the team... I am sure he also knows some of his signings are getting in the way of what he wants to accomplish.
I thought the most interesting thing here was Lalonde saying Yzerman expected the team to take a step back after the offseason (losing Ghost, Walman, etc.). Lalonde implied that they traded Walman because they were trying to do something bigger that didn't end up materializing, too.

It definitely sounds like they had a bigger picture play... which is disappointing. What could have been this past season. It is also encouraging that Yzerman didn't shift and panic to make a move, he had intentions that didn't work out and he moved on and didn't jeopardize the future.

Good discussion here, reminds me I need to update the OP lol (which I'd be doing soon anyway with the draft coming up).

Yup - Walman was rumored to being a locker room cancer, and Yzerman was trying to free up cap space and a spot for Trouba which fell apart.
