The Leafs next captain

I really don't think Kadri is captain material, at least not for a while (like 5 years). Just because he is our top scorer does NOT mean we need to give him the C. To me, Kadri is like our new Darcy Tucker...."heart and soul" guy that agitates the opponents, but ultimately not a Captain. Personally, I don't think he's tough enough and I don't want people to accuse us of having a diver as a captain. (I don't think he is really, but an argument could definitely be made that Kadri dives).

As of RIGHT now, Lupul is the obvious choice. After him, it's pretty tough to say if anybody is really captain material.

I'll stick my neck out then.

I don't actually mind Phaneuf as a captain. I think people base their opinion of what they see during interviews and scrums; Which I think he inaccurate way to access his leadership abilities.

You can never tell, maybe if they do 24/7 next season we'll get some insight into the locker room.

Naz in the future. I'm talking in 5 years, he's skilled and gritty. Lupul is another guy.

But keep Phaneuf for now, he just needs a pay cut. He looks like he's matured and a captain now.

Phaneuf will be the Captain here for a long time.

Kadri will hopefully develop into the leader someday but why rush it? Let him grow into his own as a player, he's currently on the cusp of developing into a first liner, why bother add in the captain tag?

I wonder aloud would Phaneuf want to give up what he has here? I guess maybe if they miss the playoffs again he may want to go to a winner. But I'm sure he remembers how sour the ending was in Calgary for him and hopefully appreciates that he's well liked for the most part here. He also seems to like being in a big hockey market.

So anyhow to address the topic at hand; I wouldnt mind seeing Lupul, it would finally put to bed the 'Lupul and Carlyle hate each other' rumours.

This is towards all you idiots saying Kadri, Biggs, or Rielly.

None of the three have leadership qualities. It's not about who's doing good. Heck, there's a reason Morgan Rielly wasn't captain for the Moose Jaw Warriors. None of these 3 are leaders.

The only ones close to being a leader and deserving the captain title is Lupul.

I'd say Liles as well, but he's been slipping this season and he's not really that good to be a captain.

Dion has the C, but Jeffory is my Captain

I just wanted to put that out there. Take the C off Dion already. It's embarrasing

Watching this game I would say Lupul easily. Not just because of the goals, but he's showing how much passion he has.

LOL.

"you disagree with me so you're an idiot!"

Anyways- Kadri and Biggs definitely have leadership qualities. Rielly's quiet so I wouldn't think of him.

Lupul is the best option probably though. But like I said earlier, Dion's likely staying.

Lupul can't stay healthy. You can't have a captain that misses 20-30 games per year.

I love Lupes, but this is his one flaw.

Also, spell his name right :P

Agree. He is the new Carlo Colaiacovo.

This year was a freak injury (coincidentally from a Dion shot) but same old

Lupul could handle the extra work as captain and not let it interfere with the game. Phaneuf should just concentrate on defence - he has trouble with that and doesn't need additoinal distrations

If Phaneuf leaves this organization, that would be a really sad day for the Leafs. However, if he does leave, it's most likely going to be Lupul, or we won't have a captain.

In the event that Phaneuf is traded, I'd be satisfied with not having a captain until one emerges AFTER a solid playoff run. No more premature moves. I want a captain that is undeniably the face of the Leafs by every single person in T.O. Whether that player is currently on the Leafs is still up in the air, but I don't think that's necessarily detrimental to how we're going to play for the following years. There are more important things to improve.

I wasn't into hockey as I am now during the Sundin years, but looking back, I can't imagine anyone actually debating whether or not Sundin was a real captain. As consistent as the best of them. The quiet leader with a real natural and quantifiable talent that was undeniable. One has to ask oneself, do we need that kind of leader again? I honestly think we do, but that's more of a stylistic/life experience debate rather than one based on our current team's makeup. I feel like most fans want someone who's very vocal. I would honestly like to know what the fans really want in a captain.

Is the quiet leader becoming extinct as the mentality of society changes with the modernization of media and social networking? People are voicing their opinions (rational or irrational) all over the place now and simply talking more boldly than someone else is enough to influence people into thinking you're a leader/intelligent. I suppose it's been the same since the dawn of humans, but that right has only been a privilege of the mob or the upper class, whereas now, anyone with an internet connection can have a Twitter account.

Regardless of this digression, I would also prefer a forward vs. a defenceman as nothing can spark your team more than a goal. A great save might be second. A good PK/forecheck could be next. It'd be interesting to see how people rank how influential certain plays are to them.

dion phaneuf's deal is up at the end of next year. I hope and to an extent expect he will be resigned but in the event the leafs and dion part ways, is there a player in our system you see as having the potential to wear the c? I like morgan rielly, but does he have the make up of a captain? How about tyler biggs? He is reminicent of dustin brown, a stanley cup winning captain. What about current players like kadri, jvr, and lupul? Clearly some of these guys are quite young, but down the road do we have some potential leaders ready to take on the c in our hockey crazy market. Just want to get some thoughts!
