TV: The Last of Us (HBO)

I didn't like the episode, either. Five years have passed and Ellie seemingly hasn't matured, learned anything from Joel about survival or gotten any closer to him. She's more annoying than last season and he's more pathetic. One of the things that I liked the most about the first season/game is how sweet it was to see two strangers who lost everyone that they cared about come to care for each other, and I don't like how that's been undone to the point that they're now barely speaking to one another.

The one thing that I did like about the episode was the production design and visuals. Those were top notch, as usual.

Yeah, it's almost like they de-matured Ellie compared to Season 1. It seemed like despite not knowing much about the world, she at least understood the seriousness of the cordyceps infection. I think it's one thing to show a character in their late-teens/early 20's be arrogant and overconfident in their own abilities, but I think they've taken that too far with Ellie now acting like everything about the situation they're in is a big joke and that nothing is serious.

I'm curious to see how the pace of this season goes compared to the games. Are they going to slow-walk all the Abby stuff and go "golfing" in the 3rd or 4th season? Or are they going to take out a big name actor during this season? The latter is a big risk considering that move didn't sit well with a lot of people who played the game, plus the viewers who never played the game may lose interest when that person is no longer on the show.

Another thing I found odd was that it took Abby and her crew five years to find the settlement in Wyoming when they started in Colorado.

Great episode, great special effects and great storyline for the episode.

A little shocked it happened so early in the season but it worked.

Idk, the West is pretty massive when you're just traveling by foot/horse and have limited basic resources and zero technological advantages. That timeline about tracks for me.

They should've used Über.

Like I said, never played the game but had heard about this. Surprised it happened so quickly. Now what? What's there to watch anymore? Also, I would've totally done the same as this Abby character in her place in that world.

One thing that was weird, the guy who was coming to warn about the spores in the pipe, suddenly disappeared and then it went to the attack. Like a scene was missing.

Also, some bad editing with the weather, some shot there's a blizzard and the next the sun is shining.

Well, Ellie kinda already said she's going to find and kill every last one of them. Revenge over this seems like it'd be fun to watch.

And about Abby's motivations, that's the point. She killed Joel because she was motivated to revenge her father. Now Ellie will seek revenge for pretty much the same thing.

Fast and loose with the spoilers, guys.

Well this was the one thing about TLOU Part 2 I had spoiled for me before the first season even came out so I have no idea what happens now.

Heart wrenching that Ellie had to watch that happen in real time. I'd imagine Dina would be her first lead as she saw their wolf logo.

Interesting that Abby's group all had different reactions to what Abby was doing/did. I'd imagine that will be relevant later.

Didn't actually know the doctor was Abby's dad when I had that spoiled for me. (I mean honestly, people had zero restraint when that game came out. I saw that spoiler at least three times without looking for it and without warning around the internet.) knowing that now, the killing makes sense. What Joel did, looking at it in black and white, is awful. And potentially catastrophic for humanity. But knowing this reasons, it's at least understandable. So when I see Abby's group so close to Jackson Hole I'm left wondering, are they really trekking this far and through these conditions just to punish Joel? Knowing the doctor was Abby's dad...I mean it still seems like a huge risk to life and limb to help Abby but at least I can see why they'd want to help a squadmate get revenge. As for Abby, totally understandable why she did what she did. Joel reaped what he sowed in the end. Having the full context I really don't get why fans of the games were so upset but maybe the game played it differently. I'm sure there will be some wider story/theme about how harmful revenge is, but all this was was Joel's choice having fatal consequences.

This is a minor gripe because the infected attack on Jackson Hole was an insane spectacle, but why did all those infected wake up at once? And how did they all know to run towards the city? As far as we've seen, the infected reacted to noise as an indicator for the presence of uninfected humans while regular infected can see them but still, it's not like when Joel and Ellie would pull up to a new city or town, the local infected just swarmed as a hivemind and detected them from distance. This attack involved a huge swarm of infected, as a unit, running a great distance together to attack the main gate of the city. I'd assume this happened in the game too so I'm wondering why they're bending the rules of this world this way. And on top of that, maybe I misunderstood something from Season 1 but isnt the whole thing with this fictional mutated strain of cordyceps that it thrives in warm conditions? Like sure maybe there's still climate change in the world but you have a swarm of infected go from inert to a hive mind attack and a huge chain of the fungus living in the pipes in the middle of what they show pretty clearly is a cold ass winter. Did the fungus evolve again? Cause if it can survive under any condition and getting a cure from Ellie is impossible, then humanity here is just f***ed. Top to bottom. Short of living on boats and subsisting on fish, I don't see how humanity, in a place like JH, can hope to survive and the odds were minimal to begin with. Like is that..the point? Bleak human stories in between humanity's final breaths?

Oh this is a callback to Season 1. One big difference between the show and the game is that in Season 1 when they were in Boston they explained that the cordy fungus is able to communicate through its network so if you step on a live tendril in one spot, every infected connected to that network will immediately know where you are. When they hit the pipe, all those infected knew, which is where that second swarm came from.

I didn’t see it yet but sounds like this season will be the entire second game based on your reactions.

It most likely won’t cover the whole second game. There are only 7 episodes and at least one of them will be a full flashback episode.

My guess is that the season will end at the theater faceoff

Oh yeah. That's the detail I forgot. Thanks.

Well traditionally it's been that "don't go on a movie/tv show thread until you've watched it, if you don't want to be spoiled." :dunno: Now if it's something that's leaked before release, then spoiler tags make sense.
I mean the MO in the Severance thread was we usually run the spoiler tags for a few days after an episode's release. Don't think we have a written rule, but just a courtesy. Sometimes people are fine with general discussion without wanting to see plot details early.

I've been spoiled on tv shows here about a day after release because I haven't been able to watch the episode myself yet, but that's been on me for coming in to the thread. I think it was Game Of Thrones. Spoiler tags weren't used back then.

I think Game of Thrones was when I started seeing them used more diligently. But that started more because there were a lot of book readers hinting at spoilers.

Yeah, those were the main issue. And I think at least once HBO accidentally released an episode or few in some country before the rest of the world and they leaked. The Wheel Of Time show thread has spoiler tags for book stuff but not for show stuff.

Phenomenal episode last night. Honestly, reminded me of watching Game of Thrones when it was at its peak. Just a fantastic episode from start to finish.

The attack on Jackson was amazing. And I think just about every principal character had moments to shine in this episode.

Particular kudos to Kaitlyn Dever - she had a lot of emotional heavy lifting to do in this episode. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey really delivered here as well.

Can't wait for more.
