Let's play some 4D chess with the GM.
Frk was signed last summer when the organization went looking for someone that could provide some experience for Ontario, a tweener for the lack of a better word, a player destined most likely for the AHL. Someone who has shown he has some offensive prowess, but coming off such a poor season the year prior would likely clear waivers at the end of camp. He was never destined to be in the cards for the Kings this season, but he gave them a player with 100 games of NHL experience and a heavy shot to boot. And Frk did just that, sailing through waivers like he was competing in the America's Cup.
Frk joined the Reign and was the offensive leader for a team that started off strong, but started losing key players (Kupari/Kempe/no Vilardi at the start) and surrounded by a lot of inexperienced D men, struggled substantially mid-season. But Frk never slowed down. He just kept putting the puck in the net.
Frk was called up twice, once for a day before Christmas, and once for 10 days at the end of 2019. Frk scored 3 goals in 4 games during that call up at the end of 2019, but why send him back when he was actually scoring Kings fans asked.
Frk was recalled from loan to ONT once again on February 12th while leading the Reign with 23 goals and after being named an AHL All-Star. But why February 12th?
Since Frk already cleared waivers this season, he can play 10 NHL games and be on the NHL roster for 30 days cumulative before having to clear waivers again. He is waiver exempt as long as he stays within those parameters. His recall on February 12th ensured he could play no more than 6 additional games prior to the trade deadline on the 24th. Sunday's game will put him at 10 games (not a coincidence).
Why does it matter? We'll the Kings likely want the option (if they choose to do so) to put him on the AHL roster at the trade deadline (so he is eligible to play for the Calder Cup if the Reign make it), and he won't have to clear waivers for the one-day paper transaction since he's still exempt. This also means Frk will be here after the trade deadline for the remainder of the NHL season since he'll no longer be waiver-exempt unless they decided to keep him in ONT the remainder of the season to help the Reign (I don't see that happening, especially after signing this contract today).
Funny how things work out. Happy for him and I'll think he'll be a contributor for the next few years. We can certainly use a player that can put the puck in the net.
