The Islanders aren't boring

Wait.....a poster clearly outlined the difference between a High Danger Chance and Shot On Goal and then explained how the former could be higher on a stat sheet within a given period or game..... and the rebuttal was 'to each their own, brother".

Cognitive dissonance to the letter.

To each their own, brother.

If you want me to believe there were 20 scoring chances int he 1st OT that I watched, well, as I said, to each their own.

It's your team, they won, of course, you're going to think it's exciting.

For the non-Islander fan, it was a boring game. Period.

You can say SOG means nothing, but it does. The Isles averaged less than 5 shots a period. 5!!

Pull up all the stats you want, that's ugly.

You can look at that, and Tampa's fewer than 9, in two ways. Either both tems are really bad at generating shots, or both teams are really good at preventing them. Having watched the game, I know it was the latter.

It's a bunch of boring dudes and Barzal. Barzal's pretty cool to watch, but the rest of them are pretty boring, yeah.

I think that's the crux.

If you're not engaged because your team isn't playing, you're much more likely to be bored, which is not the same as the game being boring.

That's not even it for me. It's the logical inconsistency of "There's eight teams left playing, none of them are mine and only one team is boring" even though any objective measure of "what constitutes boring hockey" doesn't add up.

I understand "I want to see lots of shots, limiting shots isn't fun. So less shots, more boring."
Vegas and Tampa have held teams to less shots per 60 minutes this playoffs than the Islanders. How is our defense making things boring?

I understand "I want to see legit scoring chances, because that's exciting!"
The Islanders have more of those per 60 than Dallas and Tampa.

I understand "I don't want a game focused on LIMITING the other teams chances"
Islanders have allowed more scoring chances per 60 than Tampa, Dallas, Vegas (and CAR, COL, BOS).

The Islanders are second in the entire playoffs in hits per 60 minutes.
The Islanders are second most penalized team in the playoffs, so there's PP chances for the other team.
Hell, the Islanders lead the playoffs in fighting majors!

I don't CARE than people are trashing my team. "Hey, you guys have sucked for 25 of the last 30 years!" Yeah, we know!
Just trash us for something that MAKES SENSE.

This thread is the equivalent of "Garth Snow was the worst GM in the history of hockey." It's just wrong. Not because I'm some defensive Islanders fan, but because only an idiot can't see that Mike Milbury was way worse!

I remember a lot of people ripping on the Kings for being boring while they were good, but I don't remember anyone slagging them for not representing the sport better vs. the NBA. Can any of them even dunk?

Either you're more of a basketball fan (which is totally fine) or you're weirdly insecure about the NHL's entertainment value. It could have been a conference finals match like Detroit-Colorado in the 90s or Edmonton-Calgary in the 80s but you're not going to lure NBA fans over to hockey during the playoffs regardless.

Embrace the hate Isles fans.

I’ll look at it like it was.....two teams playing not to lose.

That makes for boring hockey.

Play crazy defensive hockey and wait for the other team to make a mistake.

TB lost because they got away from their game, along with missing Pointer, and decided to play NYI hockey.

Which is hang back and prey on mistakes.

His point is that missing Cizikas is in no way comparable to missing either Point or Stamkos, let alone both simultaneously.

Any rational hockey fan would agree
I wonder.

Team A has five great players, five good players, and ten average, but is missing on or two of the great ones.

Team B has three really good players, five good players, and twelve average, but is missing one or two of the really good ones.

Which team feels the loss more?

It sounds like you watched a different game.

Agree to disagree.

There is a stark contrast between NFL defense which is heavily based on sacks/interceptions/big hits, and NHL defense which is primarily based on trapping, boxing out, clogging up lanes, and blocking shots.

That isn't what fans like.

What are you talking about? There were over 150 hits in that game last night.

Which is totally fine to believe. But CBJ/TB played eight periods of that and no one called it boring. That's how Boston has been good for a decade, and how St. Louis won the Cup last year.

Trotz is running the same stuff on the Island that he ran in Washington for five years. I don't remember any "Capitals are boring" threads.

Nah, I take a much simpler approach to the issue.

I turned off the TV prior to the 2OT period because I could no longer watch it.

I'm not alone in this. Have you listened to any of the talking head sports shows this morning? It was universally acknowledged that this was the worst playoff game any of them had seen in over a decade.

Yes, your team won, and that's great for you guys, I'm not disagreeing with you at all.

All I'm saying is that as a fan of the game, whose team is out, I look forward to good hockey games. Last night was the first time in my 45 years of watching playoff hockey that I turned off the TV before the game ended.

The bad the most entertaining team in the league (Tampa) was joined on the boring game. They should get the 50% of the blame.

They should ease the game schedule, period. Guys are exhausted.

Too many games, when they try to time-warp this corona period.

Isles so boring that I switched to NBA during an elimination game OT.

That is not some huge condemnation of the Islanders. Nuggets/Clippers Game 7 was the most anticipated game since sports first came back and was must watch.

Especially if anyone here is a Disciple of BigbetBob and had the Nuggs.

They are often boring, particularly when sticking to their stifling game plan. Even these last few games, credit to them for being able to score back and make it interestingly not lopsided (somewhat), somewhat when they need to, but the openness of the games is largely do to the Bolts effectively countering that system and forcing it open.

Many of the shots the isles do get are weak af too. Like the game 2 "domination". Just them holding the puck a ton so the bolts cant do anything with it, but also not doing anything with it. Perfectly execute Isles game plan

For a neutral fan anyway, with no emotional investment in the outcome itself. If you're a fan of either team and or really really hate either team, there's automatically a perception of "intensity"

they score on the rush and try to limit opposing shot quality in the cycle game but get run over possession wise just like the barry trotz capitals

Come on......that's hyperbolic at its core!!

I have not once "trashed" your team. Not once. I've said that last night's game was a snoozefest, which it was. I've also said TB was just as bad. This is the equivalent of me saying I don't like the shade of blue in your sweaters, and you coming at me about trashing your team.

Jesus, I've even said it's the right approach to take to win the games. I've said that you, as a fan, would really enjoy it. What else do you want?

Okay......the Islanders are super fun and exciting to watch. Sure, they only got 4.8 shots per period off in a double-overtime game, but man, were they ever great shots!! The great shots/60 was off the hook!!!

This place.....just like the rest of the world is so f***ing divisive. If you don't share my opinion you're a "hater", "Y'all are just jealous"!!

It's like this place is overrun with emotional pre-teens.

They are definitely boring, as many of Trotz teams have been. Great if you're a fan because he wins, awful for the rest of us.

Imagine a Vegas/Islanders SCF? What an atrocity that would have been.
