He’s Dubas’ best roster addition. You could argue Knies, but we know he was going to trade him for Fleury, so hard to give him credit there lol.
I’ve mentioned this a bunch of times already, but the last part of your statement NEVER HAPPENED. Friedman said any trade discussion involving Knies with Dubas/Shanahan was a considered a complete non-starter.

There are questions as to who said no to that trade and it wasn’t just Fleury. It was him and Hagel.
It would have sucked to lose Knies but Hagel is a damn good player who will be suiting up for Team Canada next month.

#1 Friedman is a clown and somehow went from one of the best, to maybe the biggest idiot in hockey media in a span of like 5 years

#2 It is pretty widely known that the deal was Knies in a package for Fleury + Hagel, Shanahan said no, analytics boy got upset and thankfully went to Pittsburgh

Knies was a non-starter for both according to Friedge. He was specifically stating in regards to rumours that Shanny “vetoed” any deal.
Who fed him that is my question. Dreger also tweeted about a possible deal. I buy it actually, he what a hard on for a goalie. We will never know, but it checks out on the Dubas Shanny divergence front to, why did he want more autonomy if Shanny wasn't vetoing things? Anyways.

And a first rounder from us as the trade floated.

Yes there was a deal suggested, that’s what Dreger reported. But from Chicago. Nowhere was it reported that it was Dubas who wanted it, or agreed to it, other from Reddit/randos. So if you just would rather believe randos on the internet over Friedge then have at it. I don’t even like Dubas, can’t believe I’m defending him.

Sorry for derailing the thread, just see people blaming Dubas for that deal all the time when he had nothing to do with it.

At the risk of derailing the thread further, why do you hate Friedge now as opposed to 5 years ago? I still like him so just genuinely curious as to what he did to stoke your ire.

Absolutely. There was definitely more to the trade. I was just pointing out that it’s a little disingenuous to say he was going to trade him for Fleury when he wasn’t even the best player on the other side of the trade.
But Fleury was what we really wanted was my point. I hear you.

I think it was clarified that neither Shanahan nor Dubas was inclined to do the deal with Chicago for Hagel and Fleury but during the last days of Dubas full autonomy was cited as a rift between the two with the breakup of the core suggested as well. My thinking is probably some Erik Karlsson pursuit which Dubas went ahead and completed in Pittsburgh.

Dubas wasn't very sharp. We would already have been in an ECF or two by now with a good GM.

to be honest, if the deal was true that's a good deal for Toronto lol

Hagel is a PPG winger who is excellent defensively

Dubas openly got upset because the deal/info was leaked
