I can not find any thread related to the IIHF President & Council Elections which should take place in September 2021 in St.Petersburg, Russia. So, I am starting this thread & try to update it.

As we know, the election should take place last year but it did not happen due to pandemic (source). The Russian city of St.Petersburg should host the event this September. The current IIHF President René Fasel will not candidate anymore. He said multiple times that the future IIHF President should be elected from the current IIHF Council members. I read about the following guys, all IIHF Council members, who should candidate for the post - DEB President Franz Reindl, Luc Tardif from France and Petr Bříza from the Czech Republic. I also heard about Bob Nicholson. All are only media reports, nothing official. Reindl has the biggest chance to win if I understand it correctly. The IIHF has set a deadline of June 15, 2021 for officials to submit their candidacy to succeed Fasel (source).

The IIHF Council will be elected as well. Vladislav Tretyak of Russia will not candidate anymore, the Russian side will nominate Pavel Bure to the IIHF Council. I would also expect some Swede to be nominated to the IIHF Council, because Sweden does not have the IIHF Council member now. But I have not found anything. Kalervo Kummola of Finland should not continue as the IIHF Council member as well. Current IIHF Council members.

I think it was at the 2020 World Juniors that TSN kept showing Fasel and a Spanish executive (the name escapes me) and they were heavily implying that the Spaniard was being considered to become the next president. I don't know what came of that, but I just remember it because it was really odd: Spain isn't exactly a major power in hockey, the guy was not a high-ranking member (that I can tell), and while Fasel may have favoured him, there is still technically an election.

I have never heard about a Spanish hockey executive. All I know is Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. and his late father to be the Olympics executives.

Former IIHF Council member from Slovakia, Igor Nemeček, mentioned that Reindl has the biggest chance to be elected the IIHF President. Reindl has a good relationship with the Russian hockey executives, including the KHL, which is important. Russia will not nominate their candidate, so they will support - in my opinion - Reindl or Tardif. It would be wise if just one of them to candidate. In principle, both support the very similar model for the future development of hockey in Europe.

You need to be fluent in German (also French?) to work at IIHF HQ in Zurich. I do not know about the language skills of Bříza or Nicholson. I doubt Nicholson is ready to pernamently live in Europe.

I have never heard any Fasel´s statement where he would favour any candidate. I just remember his words that his successor should be the current IIHF Council member.

Rene Fasel had his good moments in the past, but I feel like it's time to go already. Too much negativity around the guy now.

I think they set a maximum term now so a new president can be there for 12 years. Had Fasel had the same, he would have been out in 2006.

Switzerland wasn’t a power in hockey when fasel was first elected.

True, but they were still a team that had completed regularly at both the Olympics and World Championships, and have a long history of high-level hockey, none of which Spain has.

Can anyone tell me why this matters? What is the actual impact of this position?

Tretiak says that Petr Bříza announced his candidacy as well. Not confirmed from Bříza yet.

Today is the deadline for candidates to Presidency
IIHF will release the full list on Friday (July 2)
IIHF will approve all candidates by July 15
Elections in September 2021 in St.Petersburg, Russia.
Two unofficial candidates - Franz Reindl from Germany & Petr Bříza from the Czech Republic.

See.

Question 1: Do you actually follow international hockey?
IF so you know why

The big issue the IIHF has to deal with is its relationship with the NHL
I guess you need to educate me how has Fasel influenced anything at all in this "relationship". NHL does whatever it feels like it since forever.

Guessing, Henrik Bach Nielsen should have the support from Denmark, Sweden & perhaps Finland. Petr Bříza should be supported by Czechs & Slovaks. I believe, the Russians will support one of Sergej Gontcharov (Belarus), Franz Reindl (Germany) or Luc Tardif (France). Of course, that is just a few votes.

According to this article, Petr Bříza is a proponent of the European clubs. He has been very active in establishment of the European Trophy & the Champions Hockey League. Especially the Aliance of the European Hockey Clubs advocates for bigger role of the European clubs in running (day-to-day operations) of the IIHF. Franz Reindl is supported by the national hockey federations who will elect the new president & council.
