Back when I was in Alberta, I voluntarilly stayed on the night shift (6PM - 6AM). I simply kept being a night owl during my days off.

Back then, I was a bachelor with no other obligations than work so that lifestyle suited me great. I'm an introvert so I liked having to deal with less people.

Now than I'm back in university and than I actually have a girlfriend/ life outside of work, the night life doesn't suit me any longer. My level of energy is much higher if I have the same schedule every day. I simply can't afford to do that night shift crap any longer.

Getting a decent schedule was one of my main motivations in getting my ass off the security industry.

I did it during college. I'd do 4 months of full 40+ hour weeks during the summer and then when school started I'd work Saturday night/Sunday morning.

I absolutely hated and was miserable. My sleep schedule or ability to sleep at a normal time still hasn't really recovered and its been over 5 years.

I've done it before for a couple of months and didn't like it at all. I hated trying to sleep during the day.

Agreed, I did the graveyard shift at Home Depot back in the day and no matter how dark I made my room and how cool I made it in the summer. I couldn't sleep.

I did shift work at a printing facility, for five years.

This meant plenty of night shifts, as you can imagine, and while it got hectic at times it was usually pretty slow. We'd go from 11pm or so til around 7am.

Didn't mind the screwy sleep pattern, but I did like that extra night diff in my pay.

I worked the grace yard shift forever at my job. I work 4 on 4 off to so it didn't really hurt my social life.

I've been working the graveyard shift for the last 6 years as security for a hotel in Los Angeles. A lot of my friends always ask "how do you do it?" The answer is very simple. Because it's the easiest shift. The graveyard shift is the world's best kept secret. It's great because I work alone, all the guests (for the most part) are asleep, management is gone and to top it all off I make a $2 more than the day guys. Anyone else work the graveyard shift?

I did it.It's great.

The rink ..too often
Yesterday I was supposed to work from 4:00pm 'til 1:00am. I started a couple of hours late because I'd been up all night without sleep the previous night and didn't manage to go to bed until 1:00pm, three hours before I was supposed to start again.

So I started late and was supposed to finish again at 1:00am, but didn't get out of the office until 5:00am, home and in bed at 5:30am, 4 hours sleep and then gotta be back again for another afternoon start and 1:00am finish, up at 6:00am to play hockey.

The day before all this was a 7:00am start and didn't get away home until 9:00pm.

You pick up on some shifts and lose out on others in terms of down time

That **** will kill you (and most likely me) early, but been doing it so long I probably couldn't function normally doing regular hours. I love it. Sometimes you don't sleep for a day, sometimes you do just about sleep a whole day.
