I did a GM log in the GM thread. I got Pittsburgh's first round pick in the pre-season as an after thought (they are usually a playoff team). They finished in the last non-playoff spot, and with a 1 percent chance (or what ever it is) their pick won the lottery.

With that, I drafted a 5 star player....the catch....he was a grinder. He was a RWer but was left handed and had high faceoffs so he could pretty much play any forward position. I left him in the CHL for a year since he was 19. The next year he was 87 overall.

He topped out at 95 points as a first line grinder. Almost always lead the league in hits or came close to it for forwards. Always really high up in take aways. I didn't play out his whole career, but it seemed like he peaked as a 30 goal 70 point player.

I know a lot of people pass on grinders high in the draft because they don't put up points during sims, but high potential grinders can become beastly two way top 6 players that help your team win.

Exactly.. Every 5 star player is a beast, doesn't matter if he is power forward, tough guy or grinder.

idk what the deal was, but i remember one season where calvin dehann went from ~81OA at the beginning of the season, to ~92OA at the end of the season. Once the offseason was over and i was starting the next season, his rating dropped back down to 81. I thought it was some sort of glitch, but the same thing kept happening if i re-did the offseason, so i figured w/e.

Tyson Ballie ends up a stud in NHL 14, not so much on NHL 15.

Bo Horvat also ends up being a really good player

This was my first time playing GM mode for NHL 15. I bought it last week for 14.99 lol! Anyways I'm in year 8 of my GM mode with the Montreal Canadians. I traded for Drouin when he was still at 88 overall. Currently he's at 99 is that normal? He just won the scoring title with 56 goals in 70 games. 110 points overall. I havent seen much discussion on Sam Reinhart? He's a 91 overall for me and finished with 20 goals 79 assists to finish second in the league in scoring under Drouin!

Drouin's OP in gm mode in this game. He always develop into what McDavid should be.

Sadly Drouin progresses way too well and way too often. They made Reinhart a Playmaker when should really be a TWF. Hence why he usually racks up points in be a GM.

While that is true, I created Eichel (and eventually more guys that are missing from the game), and put him on my team, tanked, then drafted McDavid. They progressed ridiculously and were my #1 and #2 C's for like 14 years.

McDavid got to 98 overall whilst putting up perennial 100+ point seasons without difficulty. He also won 5 straight Conn Smythes. Eichel hit 93 overall and was usually a 90+ point scorer year after year with some 100 point seasons, and won the Conn Smythe 3 times.

It's a shame they gave a lot of prospects poor poise to start off with. I edited McDavid and made him like 87 overall with better poise and realistic attributes, though he's only 18.

So, it's the 2021 offseason and I'm thinking about trading McD because I know he's going to want a kings ransom in 3 years. So I trade away some of my "older" players in the season, traded Oshie(+) at the deadline to Dallas which became the 2nd overall. So l lose in the 2ND round, take a gamble on a center named Kavanagh at the draft 2nd overall, who was franchise potential, but my scouts had completely ignored. Ended up being the best player in the draft at 77 overall yellow(med) elite potential. Then traded Scherbak, Mantha for two young guns(Patrick (84, 22y.o)and Markkanen (23y.o 85) from Winnipeg at the draft. So here I am all set up and just looking for depth players at this point. No real need for anything when I happen to stumble into the goalie section for FA. Not that I have a need as I have Vasileskiy whose a 87 overall going into his 2nd full season as a starter. .But what do I see?!?

A 21 year old, 90 overall, franchise potential, unrestricted free agent goalie. Dylan Bouck, 3rd overall in the 2019 draft to Winnipeg, who apparently never signed him and he slipped to FA, still needing a ELC. Signed him to a 3 yr 1M max ELC and before the season started he jumped to a 92 overall

By far the luckiest thing that's happened to me.

Yeah, the AI GM's are pathetic at signing their 4.5* 5* goalies....I'd think it would be a reasonably simple coding task to say 'if you drafted one of these, trade away your worst signed goalie' or something :dunno:

I'm just hoping for major improvements in nhl 16 when it comes to scouting and player development because this year is just a joke. I'm sick of ALWAYS seeing Drouin go lights out, and Stamkos to get 10 back to back Richard rockets.

Also it turns out Markkanen was a rookie when I traded for him, ending up winning Calder that year. And while Bouck didn't win the Vezina both and the backup split the Jennings(I think it is) for least goals against. Back to back seasons now with him allowing less than 200 goals in a season.

Won the draft lottery and drafted a five star, 86 overall centerman "Norm Chucko". Kid's pretty good but only got to 94 so far as a 25 year old. Expected more, but still unreal.

So I just traded 31 y.o, 88OA DeAngelo, 2 2nd and a 3rd for a 20 y.o 87OA offensive defenseman to replace him.

A cup run and loss in the finals later and he's a 90 overall at 21 y.o with med franchise potential. 98 speed, 90 strength, 89 DA, 88OA. Just signed him to a 7yr 7.5M extension. Salary cap is at 105M so everyone is getting paid.

So, I was playing my GM mode for the last time before getting NHL 16, and I made it to year 20? I think.
So, here we go.

Big Boom Charlie Spaling Peaked at 96 Overall RW Sniper.
5 star gold potential. Posted 120 points a year for 7 years and hasn't slowed down at age 36.
In my GM mode with the Jets, which is where most of them come from, I traded for Corey Perry in year 4, traded him back to Anaheim in year 5 and stole this stud from under their noses.

Boom Xavier Bloodoff Peaked at 93 Overall LW Sniper.
5 star gold potential. Posted 120 points a year for 7 years and slowed down at age 35.
Traded to Dallas for stud in year 20, or 19. Drafted 1st overall in 2016 while tanking. Sniper posted mid-high 60's or low-mid 70's in goals a year and once posted 80 goals. He played on the 1st lone with Spaling and Connor McDavid.

Boom Pisces Aittokallio Peaked at 90 Overall Offensive Defenseman.
4.5 star gold potential. Posted 60-90 points a year and drafted 10th overall.

Bust Hades Bort Peaked at 78 Overall Playmaking LW.
Randomly Generated 1st Overall pick in 2017, 4.5 gold potential. His offensive stats were promising but he was not a physical presence. Got him out of Winnipeg when he was 22, seeing he was going to be a bust.

Boom Connor McDavid Peaked at 95 Overall Playmaking Centre.
Drafted 1st overall in 2015 while tanking, 4.5 Green Potential, 90-100 assists a year and 30-35 goals a year. Centres Bloodoff and Spaling.

Boom Lou Campoli Peaked at 89 Overall 2nd Line Playmaking Centre.
Drafted 30th Overall around year 7. 50-70 Pts a year. 4 star gold potential.

Boom Brandon Gregoire Peaked at 83 Overall Top 6 defenseman.
2.5 Gold Potential, only drafted because he was from Switzerland, 6th round steal.

Bust Nelson Nelson Peaked at 80 Overall 4th line forward.
4 Gold potential, Belgium Native, drafted 17th overall.

Boom Patrick Serizawa Peaked at 88 Overall Two-Way Defender.
3.5 Green Potential, Lost in offer sheet to Rangers, but quickly traded back to us.

Bust Vyatcheslav Pushkarev Peaked at 85 Overall Two -Way Defender.
4 Gold Potential, 8th Overall with traded Pick, Serizawa's Defensive Partner after departure of Aittokallio and McKeown.

Boom Roland McKeown Peaked at 90 Overall Defensive Defender.
4 Green Potential, Defensive Partner of Aittokallio. Offensive defenseman with defensive and Physical stats. Retired in 2031.

Bust Radek Stesjkal Peaked at 85 Overall Playmaking Checking Winger.
3.5 Green Potential, Drafted 7th Overall with traded Pick, peaked at 85 but was mostly 83, 20-30 pts a year.

Bust Len Baby Peaked at 73 Overall Minor Checking Winger.
4 Gold Potential, Drafted same year as Campoli, peaked at 67 with us, but 73 with free agency.

Boom Frederic Aube Peaked at 85 Overall, Two-Way Defender.
3.5 Red Potential undrafted free agent signing, grew to 85 overall.

Drafted Austin Matthews 1st overall in the 2016 draft, and started the season at 85 medium Franchise. Played him second line centre, and he dropped to Elite potential about halfway through the season, and ended at an 85. Highest he's gotten to is 87 in his 3rd year, and is still medium elite.

Is there a reason they drop in potential, or is it somewhat random? Did I put him in too quickly, not give him a big enough role?

Thanks, and I did have another guy in a different GM mode.

Marc-Andre Nodl, a 5th round pick that became 92 overall. He scored 50 goals and 47 assists with Detroit.

And I was wrong about Bloodoff. He retired with 912 goals and 859 assists and won the Maurice Richard trophy in his last year.

And Stesjkal scored the most goals for the Buffalo Sabres two years in a row.

Yeah, I know.
Also, what about non roster updated Matt Mistele? He usually gets 85-89 for me.
Well, and Oliver Bjorkstrand, he usually turns out well.

Crazy stuff. 120-140 points consistently. 66 goals was his peak though, pure sim. Tons of cups, of course. I could throw anyone on that line with him & expect 70 points from that player.

Dude was also just ridiculous while using him. He was like a cheat code. His CPU would go chasing players, knocking pucks away & crushing guys, often leading directly to breakaways for himself. It didn't matter what you did to the sliders, or what caliber of player would be in his presence....he would grab all the loose pucks & crush everybody. Often being slungshot into great scoring position if he chased down a loose puck in the corner boards & stuff like that. He was OP

The most goals I saw by a player in a pure simulated season, came from some guy at 84 OVR though....named Melvin Griffith who dropped 75 lol, wasn't even on my team, was a Dallas Star

Crazy stuff. Was always a bit disappointed Polacek never hit 70. Dude was the 10th overall pick. Not even 5 yellow/green star #1 or anything. Literally just hitting the jackpot. Watching this guy just keep progressing & progressing was simply awesome. I started up an NHL 16 GM, but immediately stopped playing & came back to a Polacek back-up file I have lol... In a way, this dude has made all of my future GMs be destined to NOT be anywhere near as fun as his lol.....total spoiler
