I mentioned this in the pre-game thread, but I really hope asking Hughes to sit out doesn't turn into a Luongo sat for the outdoor game situation.

Clearly he wants to go, otherwise he'd just come out and say he's sitting out to recover from his injuries and rest up for the rest of the regular season + playoffs.

This team should be doing everything it can to make Hughes happy for obvious reasons.
And let's be honest, this team isn't a serious contender this season.

To be fair, the circumstances are very different.

Hughes would only be sitting out due to an injury, not Tocchet deciding Hronek played better than him for a string of games, so he's sitting.

Now imagine telling Hughes anyone on this team played better than him

Has anyone brought up a conspiracy theory that Hughes' injury is being exaggerated such that there's a believable reason he can't go to the 4 Nations tourney, and therefore won't have to play with Miller?

Feels like something the media here would run away with as fact.

There is only one man suited for replacing Heiskanen, he just needs to be woken up first.

God this was embarrassing and such a clear sign he didn't have it (as if we needed another).

Growing up playing, there are ways you are allowed to show you're exhausted and ways you aren't. That's just the culture of the game.

If you absolutely HAVE TO you drop to one knee and lean on your stick, but even that is mostly frowned upon.

Just lean on the boards a bit, or lean over at the waist over your stick.

This is, 'the 12 year old fat kid who doesn't play sports but wanted to impress a girl so he pushed himself harder than he ever has before' levels of lack of pride (not saying that hypothetical kid lacks pride, but for a professional athlete? My God).

Hughes really should skip this tournament even if he wasn't injured as a statement on how terrible the officiatng has been for him.

He's been a target all season while not getting any of the calls you would expect for someone of his caliber. He should be getting a lot more respect around the league imo

I remember Myers or Miller coming over to him and telling him to get up. (Have some pride kid!)

Doesn't make sense to sit a healthy Hughes as the Canucks need wins.

There's absolutely zero chance that Hughes would go for that. Sit out to hurt his chance to repeat at Norris, chance to be in the Hart convo? Nope no way.

Fascinated to watch ep40 play with and against top talent
I think there is a possibility that EP40 will get exposed even more badly in an environment like that. Every lineup is stacked, there are no hiding, no easy match ups, and the whole hockey world will be watching. Based on merit and production, should he even make Sweden's roster? When every game matters, would the coach bench him or just sit him out? It can get worse for Petey if he goes.

There is also a chance that he will do ok if every player takes this tournament as seriously as the ASG. Or maybe playing with better linemates will help him, rather than being held back like some posters here think.

As for Hughes, might as well let him go. Honestly there are no reasons to believe this team will have any success this season, even if they sneak into the playoff they'll be swept in R1. Just let Quinn go and have some fun for a couple weeks and get his mind away from the drama, there's very little joy for him this NHL season anyways. Like a mini-vacation in the middle of a mentally tiring year.

Really don't get the appeal for this and why someone like Hughes would even risk playing with an injury for some glorified all star with your country
He wants play for his country against other countries' best players. It's an honour to get selected. It ain't complicated man.

Quinn runs the show here. They can't afford to displease him. If he wants to go, he's going.
