Its not much of a game, its announcing to the world that we aren't going to keep him. It lowers his value, to the point where we'll be lucky to get a late round pick for an expensive layer on the downside. I just think Allen deserves a chance to renegotiate his current deal and return to the form that made him a pro bowler and team captain. I think this move is a little hasty, IMO.
It’s 16m cap savings. That’s a pretty tremendous starter. Sadly better than Allen. CB, DB, OL, WR. With how contracts can be constructed — 16m is a LARGE slot, my man.

They are letting the market know that they have this much MORE. I dig it.

Plus we don’t know what Allen’s camp has been saying to the team. Unless I missed some comments, somewhere?

Him and Payne both have been major disappointments IMO. I'm glad they are looking to upgrade the position.

Payne has been a disappointment, who's only big year was his contract year, otherwise he's been meh. Allen was a team captain and two time pro bowler (voted, not injury replacement), who's best season actually came AFTER he signed his big contract extension.

Its also notable that when Allen went out vs Baltimore, our run defense collapsed until he returned. Payne could not hold down anything on his own.

I haven't heard a peep about their discussions, but I have to imagine they've talked and this being the result, no progress was made. I get the savings, but there has to be suitable replacements to make the savings meaningful. Sure, we can find a $8 or $10M DT to replace Allen and save the cap space, but will he be as good as Allen or a downgrade? Is Allen just cooked, or did he have a rare pec injury that hurt his performance? If we know the answer then the path is clear, but I'm not sure we know the answer. He was on track for a solid season when he went down with injury.

I remember when we didn't want to pay Brandon Scherff top money to play guard, and we spent the next year playing Elmer J Fudd at right guard instead. But hey, we saved some money.

You are comparing and contrasting Bruce A to Adam P.

I’m not worried. Newton is going to start, and they will sign a vet backup AND probably draft and DT. The draft is RICH with DE/DT types. Very much so.

You know this by playing the mock draft game 😊

Well, Peters speaks:

Commanders General Manager Adam Peters confirmed that defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has received permission to speak to other teams about a trade, but it’s far from guaranteed that Allen will be leaving the team this offseason.

Peters said at a Tuesday press conference from the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that Allen “wanted to be able to explore opportunities” as he heads into the final year of his contract and that the team has been staying in regular contact with him and his agent as that process plays out. Peters said he expects to see Allen’s agent at the Combine later this week and stressed that no outcome has been ruled out at this point.

Really, everything’s still on the table in terms of whether it’s trade or staying here or whatever,” Peters said, via Heather McDonough of NBC4 in Washington. “We’re still going through that. It’s kind of early in the stages. We haven’t done a lot of exploring yet, but that’s kind of where we’re at right now.”
