Post-Series Talk: The Florida Panthers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 (mod warning in OP)

Berube knows. Babcock knew. Their teammates know. Is “between the ears” a euphemism for not wired to play tough hockey?
The problem is when you 3-4 of them as your leaders it won’t work. You put a guy like marner on Vegas and he will shine. The spotlights off him and they play a sound game. The team just isn’t built right.

And that’s not marners fault. It just is what it is. Sucks to lose him for nothing, if he leaves. Which is most likely.

Imagine taking the Stanley cup champs to 7 games WITHOUT a fully healthy lineup and you have people wanting to blow things up .

Here's the ACTUAL facts

Injured Matthews
1 goal 3 assists in 7 games

Marner
1 goal 4 assists in 7 games.

Nylander
3 goals, 3 assists in 7 games.

Barkov
5 points in 7 games but 2 were phantom secondary assists in a blowout game, and his only 2 goals were in Panthers losses.

Reinhart
2 goals, 3 assists in 7 games. But one of those goals were in a game that was already finished.

Tkachuk
4 assists in 7 games.

Looks to me like the Leafs stars outplayed the Panthers stars. Especially since the Panthers had more help from their depth players than the core four did. And ofc, Panthers best goalie vs Leafs second best goalie..

Matthews and Marner are better than any skater on the Panthers.

Nylander played better than any of them this series.
2 playoff series wins in 20 years. Buffalo has 4 and they haven’t made the playoffs in 14 years.

If you're the Leafs do you strip Matthews of the C?

Whatever he thinks or feels inside, the guy is simply not good at interacting with the press in these situations. Tavares, Marner and Reilly all did better than him in the post game press conference. It might appease some of the fans anger. It'll cause controversy for a while for sure but best case scenario take some pressure off him and help him just play hockey?

The irony. How can they fill the roster with a proper supporting cast when Matthews and Marner refused to budge on their salaries?

You have a GM that doesn't immediately cave and gets them to buy into that vision.

Say what you will about their play on the ice but it's not up to Matthews and Marner to manage the cap.

leafs were doomed cap-wise the second they signed Tavares, because everybody surpassed him and then pointed to him when starting their contract negotiations

If the intent is to force him into accepting a trade by embarrassing him, then for sure it’s the right move. IMO Matthews should have refused to accept the C while Tavares was still on the club. That’s not how leaders behave. Tavares giving up his C is what a true leader does. Selfless act. Matthews imo is far too interested in appearances than winning.

Agreed.

From the outside I absolutely think the Tavares signing is the moment the rebuild went into the ditch. Dubas apparently wanted to land the biggest fish on the market, team needs be damned.

Yup. Definitely jumped the gun, cost the Leafs some depth the last 7 years, and ruined every single contract negotiation moving forward.

Even if he walks, the damage is done. Look at the deals Marner and Matthews got - top cap hits, all signing bonus, NMC, front loaded, and not max term.

They should have traded marner 3 years ago anyone and everyone could see what's going to happen. They could have got a boatload.

Pretty sure the Cats know stolie since he played for them last year

Bob also let in some absolute shitters too
Bob hadn't let in a shitter for almost 4 games. Maybe 1 in there. He was locked in for the last few games.

Woll had two great games and two terrible ones. Stolartz is the better goalie, whether the Cats know him or not. Leafs play better and different in front of him

All this said, Leafs were an absolutely embarrassment for 2 of the last 3 games. Cats exposed and dissected them

Matthews doesn't like the press side of the business, and it really shows. I dont blame him, I couldn't stand dealing with the Toronto media plebs either. I have no idea how he is in the room but Id say thats all that matters. He got them to a game 7. The team just wasnt prepared to deal with the pressure, again.

Maybe its a collection of things? Marner is going to cash out on all this, July 1st. Then he will float through a few times a year and drop back handed comments about the the lack of support he had.,,,

The fans have to partially be to blame. Throwing jerseys on the ice... who wants to sign a contract there after that? Which players name and number was on the jerseys thrown on the ice?

Out of the key players (excl Nylander as I dont really remember him doing lots of of post games), only Rielly seems like a natural talker who people can relate too.

JT, AM, Marner all do a very similar low key robotic way of answering questions. It's like they memorized a script before the season started and any time the leafs win, you say one thing. If you lose, you say the other.

Say it with as little emotion as possible for 2 minutes and the the press will lose interest and leave the locker room.

Or maybe they are just introverts and hate talking to the public. Some people are just like that. Harrison Ford is a hall of fame actor. And supposedly he hates doing live talk shows being asked questions on the spot. Sounds weird coming from someone whose career is hollywood, but some people are wired that way.

I dont remember a lot of post games from the past, but I do remember Jarome Iginla doing post games and he was so friendly and relatable talking like a normal guy.

LOL, just saw this on FB.....
