Post-Series Talk: The Florida Panthers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 (mod warning in OP)

What two first round picks are you going to trade you don't have any first round picks for the next 2 years

This is another thing, you can’t keep mortgaging the future hoping this core is worth it before they win anything on their own.

I would have rather kept the 1sts and Fraser minten

Tkachuk, Barkov, Verhaeghe, pretty quiet last night. Reinhart got a late goal after the game was out of reach. The Panthers third line dominated.
Meanwhile, Leafs' depth did f*** all as usual, but they'll be trashing the core 4 and running Marner out of town.

Those 3 were all over the ice and winning countless puck battles. Barkov was phenomenal with his stick and board play. He was the reason that Matthews line could not sniff Florida’s zone. Verhaeghe missed way too many chances in this series but they were definitely there for him.

Thing is, the Leafs play in the ultra talented Atlantic. You lose a 100 point player in Marner, you lose a 40 goal scorer in Tavares. How do you compete in that division? Panthers will still be there next year, Tampa still very good, Ottawa getting better. You lose those guys where does that leave the Leafs. I just don't think you can get anywhere at all without them. I would look to make a roster changes on d. Changes to the 3rd 4th lines before getting rid of the guys who got you to the playoffs. I dont think a Leafs team without Marner and Tavares even make the playoffs in the Atlantic.

You beat those teams by developing a team that plays with jam rather than skill, because if the skill dries up in the playoffs like it has basically every year for the past decade, you'll still be able to grind out a close game once in a while.

Every year they make changes in the bottom six and in their D. Rielly's literally the only D that's been there more than a few years, everyone else has changed out. Similar story with their bottom six forwards, there's a lot of yearly turnover there.

It sounds like you're arguing for some version of 'let's run it back again.' We're all entitled to our own opinions

To be fair they did this last year and they took the defending Champs to Game 7. The alternative to "run it back" is no playoffs. I find it hard to believe the Leafs can even make a wild card with just Matthews and Nylander. Who becomes the 2nd line center, who will be the 3rd line center? Free agent class is pretty thin this year. While I understand "run it back" might be frustrating I still think its better than "miss the playoffs".

This may be unpopular, but at this point Leafs should push for a second Toronto franchise, it’s the least they could do for fans of Toronto. That will theoretically double Toronto’s odds of winning.

I know there's the ridiculous extra fee an owner would have to pay to put a franchise there but in terms of markets, it's kind of crazy there's not a second team there.

I could see Hamilton more than a 2nd Leafs team, but it's really just Greater Toronto in disguise. Kind of like how Buffalo is really just Greater New York.

Just imagine if the Leafs let go of Marner and Tavares, and traded Nylander and Matthews.

How bad could it be? Nylander would net a good young player on an ELC and a high pick.

Mathews two good players, a high pick and excellent prospect.

Leafs would have to take back some salary, but it could be expiring deals, or good value ones(i.e. JEE at 4 x 5.25M).

It's time to face facts. The core is getting older, not better, and it's not like the competition is sitting still in the East.

As a Bruins fan of the 4 important people on the leafs team if they were available I'd take Nylander.
One of his best friends is Pasta, so that's nice.

Marner? He'd have to get a transplant first. So there's that.

Tavares, um no.
Matthews? Uuuuugh! Not a chance.

The other top teams in the Atlantic seem to be doing fine with Tavares or Marner.

Teams win the Stanley cup every year without Tavares and Marner. How do they do it?

What are the odds of drafting three star players who don’t have the compete or extra gear in critical games? They are all amazing players in the regular season but disappear in critical games. You can win with one of these guys as the others will get the puck to him but you can’t win with three. You can probably throw Tavares and Rielly into that group as well. So that’s 5 guys.

It’s going to be tough to fix but the best option is to get rid of a couple this offseason (Marner and Tavares?) and try to bring in more competitive and physical players to help bring out the best in Matthews and Nylander. Not sure what they do about the aging D though.

The tough part will be doing it without any high picks or top prospects and getting no return for Marner and JT as free agents.

We want Florida *clapclapCLAPCLAPCLAP* We want Florida *clapclapCLAPCLAPCLAP*

People keep quoting this like it's an insult or something.

Of course they wanted Florida. It means they are still playing playoff games.

Of all the humiliating things about the Leafs over the last couple decades (and there have been many), that one doesn't even register. And yet it keeps getting trotted out for sure reason.

As a Pens fan, I hope Marner likes Sid and wants to reunite with Dubas for a bit, Tavares too, f*** it...

Anywhooo the core is playing just the same as their mentors did, Marleau, Thornton, Giordano, Spezza were all brought in to mentor the core 4 and they've done a wonderful job, losers mentoring others to be losers. Any winner that came in Noped out really fast.

You are insinuating that teams don't have comparable players?

The Atlantic doesnt have Kucherov, Pastranak, B. / M. Tkachuk, Barkov. None of those players are comparable to Tavares and Marner?

They’re in very big trouble

No decent prospects and no picks. Aging D, nobody to replace Marner/Tavares, and probably not a top UFA destination anymore.
