Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Jose Ortiz is on a torrid streak. Nothing new for either of the Ortiz brothers but he is 16 8-3-3 the past three race dates.

^ I'll ask a couple of trainer friends in the upcoming days to see if they know a larger number. A quick search found a 36-way shake at Oak last year.

  • John Velazquez was named on four mounts at Santa Anita but opted to take one ride at Fair Grounds. he won there. His first three replacements won at Santa Anita.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $10 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: 11 races. Solid card throughout.
  • Race 6: The $1 superfecta paid over $70,000.
  • Race 7: Whereshetoldmetogo (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) won the $75,000 purse, the only horse sent out by the proficient trainer. Whereshetoldmetogo is the horse that savaged (attempted to bite) Firenze Fire in 2018 at Parx.

  • Race 8: Dontmesawithme (Abner Adorno/Flint Stites) won the first of three $100,000 races and at 18-to-1. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,700.
  • Race 9: Luna Belle (Denis Araujo/Hamilton Smith) won comfortably as the 1-to-5 shot.
  • Race 10: Shake Em Loose (Charlie Marquez/Rodolfo Sanchez-Solomon) won the last of three straight $100,000 races.
  • Leading Trainers: John Robb (22) has a 1-win lead over the recent kingpin of Maryland racing Claudio Gonzalez. The meet ends March 27. Of the top 10 trainers at the meet, Robb (37%) and Brittany Russell (28%) are setting the pace.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $13.9 million.
  • Luis Saez won four more times including twice for Florida-based Jonathan Thomas. He has 111 wins at the meet and will likely win the title by a large sum.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won four times including two for Todd Pletcher.
  • Race 9: Bright Future (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was the star of the day with a terrific maiden debut. The son to Curlin was bought for $350,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: Roughly $10 million.
  • Race 9: Rated R Superstar (David Cabrera/Federico Villafranco) pulled a mild upset in winning the Grade 3 $500,000 Essex Handicap. The 9-year-old is one of the oldest horses to win a graded stakes in quite some time in the US -- at least stretching my memory. Out for the 59th time, the Kodiak Kowboy gelding won for the 11th time.

  • Race 7: Bob's Edge (Luis Quinonez/Larry Jones) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Whitmore Stakes. Anytime Jones wins it is a great day for the sport as far as I see it. Whitmore retired last year after more than $4 million in earnings in 45 starts.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $15.5 million.

Brittany Russell is sending a horse to Dubai. Other U.S. shippers include Steve Asmussen, Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, Bob Baffert, Saffie Joseph,

@GKJ

One of my Gulfstream contacts said he recalls a 56-way shake and that the track had to re-do rules because there wasn't a sufficient amount of pills. Due to circumstances, he couldn't elaborate immediately but next talk I will get the details. Others couldn't recall anything as extensive as 39.

I figure if you need so many pills, there should be more than one shake. How big is the shaker? You'd need one of those machines they use for the lottery.

@GKJ

According to one person, at Gulfstream, the pill bottle is maxed out at 16. If there are 31 claims, then there is a near even split between 15 and 16 into two bottles. This person has never heard of anything more than 39.

He told me the pills drawn from each bottle go into a final draw if the number is more than 16. Thus, 17 claims would be split 9 and 8 and then those two winners would be in a final draw.

He said if only three claims are made, the first shake has two advance and those two winners go into the final round where one claim/pill is determined.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco had a natural hat trick among a 4-win day.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 10: The $,50 Pick 4 paid over $14,000. That is large for Laurel.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
  • Handle: $9.9 million.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Leading Jockey: James Graham looks to be the riding champ at the meet as he leads his closest challenger comfrtably. The meet ends March 27.
  • Leading Trainer: Ron Faucheux is in good shape to defend his 2021 title at this meet. He leads Brad Cox, the defending North America Outstanding Trainer, by six wins.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Chalk: The card ended with two bombers but the prior six races saw favorites win which is a very un-Oaklawn-like showing.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Juan Hernandez rode four winners aboard six mounts. Two victories were for trainer Craig Lewis who entered with three wins in 2022.
  • Handle: Roughly $9.5 million.

The 2-day Ocala, FL (horse country) 2-year-olds in training sale ended with four horses sold for over a million. Over $49,000,000 in sales included 375 horses up 30% from 2021. The cumulative average was $132,000+ which was an improvement of 13% from 2021.

The million dollar sellers:
  • $1.2 million son to More Than Ready -- owner Kaleem Shah who had a lengthy history with Bob Baffert.
  • $1.1 million son to Into Mischief
  • $1.0 million son to Into Mischief
  • $1.0 million daughter to American Pharoah

A ruling in Kentucky today denied Bob Baffert's contention that a 90-day suspension will harm his business entity. The same ruling, however, stated the suspension begin April 4 which means Baffert could run his horses in Kentucky Derby preps including the important April 2 weekend. While he can train horses in those preps, the connections receive zero points towards entry into the Derby. Owners would have to decide whether to stick with Baffert or transfer to another barn prior to those races in order to qualify for said preps. He has been ruled off the grounds at Churchill Downs. If owners stick with Baffert in any Derby prep and win, they collect the purse money. The 90-day suspension is reciprocal which means all tracks in North America and selected tracks internationally will abide.

Baffert's camp will appeal today's ruling to the Kentucky appeals court.

April 2 has the Wood Memorial (NY), Arkansas Derby (AR) and Florida Derby (FL). The Santa Anita Derby (CA) and Blue Grass (KY) fall on April 9.

As a hypothetical, Baffert trains a horse and it wins the Arkansas Derby. However, he wouldn't get rewarded with the needed points (100 in this case) towards the Kentucky Derby based on banishment by Churchill Downs. If there is a switch of trainers prior to the any prep race, one person not associated with Baffert, then it is business as usual for all but Baffert which is his basic point about losing his stock.

The Dubai World Cup is on Fox Sports 2 from 8:00 am ET until 1:00 pm ET. The UAE Derby, which is a Kentucky Derby prep, will be shown during that broadcast as well.

Grindstone, the oldest living Triple Crown race winner, has passed away at 29. Grindstone (Jerry Bailey/Wayne Lukas) won the 1996 Kentucky Derby at 5-to-1 under the direction of his Hall-of Fame connections. He was part of the rare Unbridled trilogy lineage -- also Red Bullet and Empire Maker -- that won Triple Crown races by a previous Kentucky Derby winner. He raced six times and his Derby win was his finale following an injury in training.

Earlier this month Go For Gin, the 1994 Kentucky Derby winner who was the oldest living Derby winner, passed.

Here is the full card for Dubai, UAE on Saturday.
  • Race 5 is a Kentucky Derby prep with 100 points awarded the winner unless it is a horse trained by Bob Baffert and in that case the winner gets zero.
  • Race 11 is the second largest purse in the world.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 8: Chica Boom (Irad Ortiz. Jr./Ruben Gracida), sent off the favorite, got her nose down in time to nip the pace-setting King's Legacy (Luca Panici/David Fawkes) who was out for the first time and at 30-to-1. A perfectly timed ending. This was the finish of the day. It was a 3-win day for the brilliant jockey, The trainer won for the second time this year.

Bob Baffert has willingly sent four horses to other trainers including Messier who will now be conditioned by Tim Yakteen a former assistant. Baffert was suspended 90 days by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, a punishment set to begin April 4 though that has been appealed. Churchill Downs independently banned Baffert from all of its properties and decided that any horse under Baffert's care would get zero points in any prep race no matter the track. One of those races, the UAE Derby, is worth 100 points and will be held in Dubai on Saturday.

Three horses will be trained by Yakteen and remain in California. Those are Messier -- who will run in the Santa Anita Derby April 9 -- Doppelganger and McLaren Vale .

Blackadder
, a fourth horse, will train under Rodolphe Brisset who sually trains in Arkansas, Kentucky and points east.

Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Race 3: Heir to the Roar (Carlos Olivero/Antonio Cioffi) was the lone first-time starter and topped a mind-numbing $2 exacta that paid over $1,500. Little Belita (Luca Panici/Larry Bates) placed at 64-to-1 and paid $64,40 for place.

Has the UAE Derby winner ever come to the US and done anything important in the triple crown?

Thunder Snow (3-4 years ago?) came to the US but bucked coming out of the gate as he exited the stall. As awkward a start as I recall in recent years. He was pulled in the opening few seconds. That was probably the most noteworthy. He was owned by Godolphin and billed as their "Kentucky Derby candidate." Successful ownership throughout except the Derby.

I don't recall another.

Toast of New York was a bomber and placed in a Breeders' Cup Classic to Bayern. He didn't run in the Derby, however.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Closing Weekend: The meets closes Sunday. Right now Dylan Davis (58 wins) and Trevor McCarthy (53 wins) are battling for top rider. Rudy Rodriguez appears to be the winner among all trainers.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Racing: There were some exciting finishes today in Maryland. Seven of the 10 races had finished one length or less including nose (twice), neck and head.
  • Race 4:

  • Race 5: Though the field was cut in half by scratches, a wonderful conclusion where both of the top two finishers came back at the other.

  • Race 9:

  • Jeiron Barbosa is in his first year of riding and entered today 3-for-73 with every mount in Camarero (PR). Today, he rode i nthe continental US for the first time and won with both mounts. The 18-year-old currently possesses a 10-pound bug allowance.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Frank Russo sent out two horses and both won. The Native New York is 80 years of age. He has a small stable.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Closing Weekend: The meets closes Sunday. James Graham appears to be a lock to win the riders' title. Ron Faucheux should win the trainers' title comfortably.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Juan Hernandez had a 3-win day, He is a sizzling 11 7-1-0 the past two racing days.

They always come back! Junior Alvarado is leaving New York and returning to south Florida to ride during the summer. There were rumors he would take his tack to Kentucky but unless he travels weekends, he will stay in south Florida where he rode in his earliest days. Alvarado is a fine rider and gets top call for Bill Mott often. New York in the summer is as tough a colony as exists these days but getting mounts can be difficult.

South Florida in the summer isn't as competitive as other jurisdictions.
