Injury Report: The Eddy Punch Clock Memorial Infirmary Thread

Reading between the lines, I am going to go out on a limb and hazard a guess that Petey may possibly be injured

Although I know such an extreme and controversial take will be upsetting to most, and even send many into conniptions*

* see my previous posts for the definition of this made up word. Spoiler alert, it ain't pretty

As per Tocchet, Derek Forbort has a broken orbital bone. He is done for the season.

Tocchet says Thatcher Demko won’t play either of final two games. Tolopilo likely to get first NHL start. And Myers not quite ready so another AHL dman on the way up.

Demko is becoming Mr Glass. He broke down much faster than Cory. This shows what a freak of nature Lungo was playing 70 games/seasons in Florida and 60+ for the canucks. Even his late 30's in his final Florida stint he averaged over 50 games/season.

Vezina caliber goalie, overplayed, now broken

Selke caliber centre, overplayed, now broken

Norris/Hart calibre d-man, overplayed, now broken

There is a pattern in there somewhere

None of them have been overplayed. All have been in line for normal minutes for their expected roles.

Hughes has absolutely been overplayed this season

Petey was badly overplayed at the end of the garbage time 22-23 season costing the team a shot at Michkov and leading to his knee injury, where he was overplayed for several months at the end of the 23-24 season and from which he has never recovered his form

Demko was overplayed in the 23-24 season and is now broken

They’ve been playing minutes expected of players in their roles. That their bodies can’t handle those roles isn’t a factor of overplaying but that they can’t handle the roles.

Demko, specifically, has always been susceptible to injury. Even having procedures in college.

I'm not going to lie, if Trenin takes a puck to the mouth and ends up gumming down his meals for a nice long stretch, ~ zero tears will stream down my cheeks.

hughes has finished the last three seasons playing substantially worse than he did early in the season. he was nowhere near 100% in the playoffs last season. whether he's playing "minutes expected of ... his role" or not they should probably figure out a way to get him more rest

I think a capable six man unit next year can do this

How were they overplayed? Are you insinuating the team made these guys play when they were dinged up?

They were injured from overplayed, they were played injured leading to them breaking

Vancouver's travel schedule is also a far bigger factor than most teams face, particularly in the east

To look at average minutes played by an injured Vancouver star player to another team's less injured, less traveled star player is a mistake

A mistake many have made, including Toccs

Hughes is entering his prime, while Petey is in his prime

I will be shocked if Hughes is ever in the conversation for the Hart again, and shocked if Petey puts up 100+ points again or is in the conversation for the Selke, and I will be shocked if Demko is a Vezina finalist again

Hopefully I will be shocked

But I doubt it. They're broken. From being overplayed. By Toccs

Disagree with that lije of thinking. All the teams on the west coast have travel issues. So do the Alberta teams. So basically a quarter of the league.

Demko isnt playing near the amount of games that Brodeur, Fleury, Roy, Luongo, Joseph and Belfour played. Hughes is top 5 for D men and doesn't have to play hard (any) pk minutes. Peter needs to be in better shape and get stronger.

This is hardly on Rick Tocchet. What a weird take.

Pettersson barely used any energy for months

Goaltending as a position has become FAR more physically taxing then it was during the years of Brodeur and Roy and even Luongo. Luongo was a victim of being a goalie during the transition and that resulted in him being destroyed once the playoffs came. Today. No goalie can start 65 games and perform in the playoffs.

I dont think its just straight up on Tocc.

I think that the 3 stars that have broken are not your average physical specimen.

Hughes is tiny.

Pettetsson struggles to put on muscle and I would bet he weighs less when the season ends then when it starts.

Demko had his first hip surgery in college.

There are ways to track recovery and get ahead of things like this but I dont think the Canucks emply these methods.

Proper depth on the blueline, and hopefully some bigger margins of victory, should help put Hughes minutes back down to just under 25 minutes a game like last year.

People can argue he should play less, but when you have the best dman in the league, especially one that skates as well as Quinn, those kinds of minutes are completely normal. Scott Niedermayer was playing 25-27 minutes a night in his prime in Anaheim, and they went up to 27-30 minutes in the playoffs. Same deal with other elite dmen like Lidstrom, Pronger, etc.

Best thing the Canucks can do is make those minutes easier by getting some forwards who can drive play, so he isn't on his own out there half the time.

The problem is that those guys were much more durable during a time were hits were thrown with murderous intent and the league was filled with Raffi Torres type. Hughes is very nimble and can avoid most hits but every time he takes a hit >= moderate he gives the fans a panic attack. He's been dinged a lot lately and the coach has to be smart like AV was when giving players icetime. The objective is not to have Hughes pad stats but to use him with maximum efficiency. He should not even play in meaningless games unless he is 100% or if you play him don't give him 25 mins.
